Title: Lynx Nov BAHAMAS!! / Made it to Bimini Bahamas!!
Post by: Lynx on April 03, 2007, 08:40:03 AM
Plans are being finalized to head off to Abacos, Bahamas in Nov for the Season and then North.

Anybody else planing this as well?

I am singlehanding and have room for a Woman crewmember wanting to go cruising the Bahamas and East Coast with DWM. No experience needed.

Casting off in Nov '07 from Florida to the Bahamas. Going north in May, return in November, north in May etc..... Staying on the hook every night for the next 3 to 5 years in out of the way places, the boat draws 12 inches. Fair weather sailing. I have an '06 MacGregor 26M loaded with new equipment for cruising.  I am 50,  DWM, 6'4", 265 pounds, no drugs, non-smoker, light drinker. I can and have singlehanded my boat for many days, but would like a woman (no drugs, non-smoker) to assist me in anchoring, docking, steering and companionship. No experience is needed, just willing to be on a small motorsailor for months. Wanting adventure on the water in out of the way islands, bays, cays, rivers, lakes, harbors, and towns in the Bahamas and East Coast for 5 years or less.  Expenses on the boat I will take care of – food, water, fuel, wear and tear.  This is an unpaid position. Your expenses are -  medical, travel to and from the boat and expenses on shore. Email me if you want to go cruising.

Hi Lynx,
Sounds like a dream come true for you. Where do you mean when you say going North?

I looked up the specs for the MacGregor, and it appears to have a daggerboard. So your twelve inch draw is with the daggerboard retracted? That should get you into some pretty tight spots, I would think.

Best of luck,
-elizabeth

Hello Elizabeth, My plans for going "North" is up the ICW (East Coast) and trailer to the west end of the Erie Canel, travel the waterways east and south and then back down to Bahamas for the next season.

Yes, the MacGregor draws 12 inches daggerboard and rudders retracted. I can motor in 18 inches if the wind is not to bad. With the planing hull and a 50 hp outboard, the Boat can cruise at 15 mph (3 to 4 miles per gallon), I can get out of trouble almost as fast as I can get into.

I have been planing this for some time and it is a dream come true.

Know of anybody that would like to come along?

Regards, James V, M/S Lynx

Congrats on the crossing.  I look forward to reading more about Bimini, and progress on your journey.  We are enjoying Guana Cay right now, and expect to linger in the Abacos for another little bit before heading farther south.  Would be great to run into you.

Thanks for the encouragement Dan, but I am pretty sure that the picture I was referring to was taken in Fishermans bay, Guana Cay Bahamas not in Bimini. We might pass through Bimini on our way out, but we did not come in through there.

James is using this thread to document his journey through the Abacos, where Rose and I just left.  I think he took the picture when Rose, Peter, and I were going ashore to 'Grabbers' where we all shared Thanksgiving dinner (it was a very nice spread by the way, first time I have ever had lobster bisque for thanksgiving).  It was nice to share dinner with James, and we met a bunch of new friends there as well.  I hope we are able to do as well at Christmas.

(on edit: merged the threads to make it a little more clear)

Beautiful pics! That cannon didn't fire a big diameter shot, but what it did fire, I'd bet went a *long* way!

I might be wrong, but I don't think that hole is 'right' for that gun...it does look too small relative to the size of the rest of the weapon.  Perhaps the bore was filled and redrilled small...maybe for salutes or demo's at one time or something.  It sure is a tiny ball that would fit that hole.

Any other takers?

You are right, that is a prop. Only one working cannon there. There is a foundry and they make and sell cannons, working and non-working. I will see if I can get some pics posted from the foundry but due to topless or nude art I may not. Let me take a look.

A 1/2 day trip (25 miles)  from Petes Pub in Little harbor to Marsh Harbour. Nice.

Lynx...is the 'lunch' picture from Hope Town taken at 'on the beach' grill? I like their motto...'no shirt,no shoes,no problem'

The lunch picture is taken from Hope Town Harbor Lodge.  "on da beach" is another resort just a few hundred yards away. Nice.

Please wear shirts in town, both Men and Wemon. No shirts is beach wear and you may not be serviced in towns in the Bahamas.

Hi James,

I finally discovered this thread.  Your pictures are awesome and bring back so many fond memories of my travels through the Abacos on my Mac 26X - The Edge.  Little has changed in the past 5 years.

All was going well as I explored the Abacos.  My only luxury was a good cup of coffee just before dawn.  I didn't bother with any form of refrigeration.  New friends were just an anchor away.

My downfall happened when I agreed to cat (as in 4 kitty cats) sit for a Dutch lady on Great Guana Cay for 6 weeks.  She had an estate to die for...the main house faced the ocean and her boathouse/elaborate private dock faced the sea.  There was luxury, opulence, privacy and "security".   When I finally returned to life on The Edge, everything had changed.  Everyone had bailed out for the States as hurricane season was pending.  It was so lonely.  I headed for Florida, too.  I travelled for 3 days without seeing another cruiser.

There are tales to tell here but the bottom line for me was...sailing alone can be pretty lonely, even (especially?) when you are in a tropical paradise.  Don't linger too long.

You have many months before hurricane season.  Enjoy everyday. :)

Thanks for the reply. I had to work 3 long years at 84 hrs a week for this. I did not enjoy the people that I had to wor kwith so being "alone" is not that big of deal for me. We all stop cruising at some point. The %'s still are the same for years. 80% do not go for more than 1 year.

Cruising is what you make out of it. So far, it has been so much better than work that I do not want to go back to a job that I do not enjoy unless it is to get back to cruising.

(i do need to empty the boat some)

Hi Lynx,

Before I spent 6 weeks cat sitting, I had planned to stay in the Bahamas and ride out the hurricanes tucked up some creek, nestled in mangroves.  When I returned to living on The Edge and discovered that everyone was gone (this was August, I believe), I realized that hiding out through hurricanes by myself didn't seem so romantic.  I wanted to get the heck out of there fast.

I pulled in to Little Sale Cay for the night while on my way to West End for my push across the Stream to Florida.  This was a favorite anchorage but was empty at this time.  30 k winds from the south were blowing straight in on me the following morning.  I struggled for what seemed like hours to get my 20 lb plow, with 30' of chain and a 10-pound sender dislodged.

I spent the remainder of the day sailing in miserable weather (thunder/lightening/heavy rain) to West End.  That is another story....

The bottom line is that I enjoyed the challenge and hustled The Edge back to BC for the winter.  The following spring, I trailered her back to Norfolk and spent the summer cruising Chesapeake Bay.  The reason I stopped cruising had to do with breaking the tip of my collar bone the following winter while skiing.

I am originally from Maine and had two boats in Yarmouth.  You will enjoy the Casco Bay Islands.

Enjoy your lazy days.  I envy you....

Well, bad days. HAd 1/2 one, front and rain and big wind. this will happen during the winter but it does cool it off at night into the 60's. A lot better to sleep. the souther part of the Bahamas , Georgetown, does not get as many fronts but it will be warmer and will have strong trade winds some of the time.

Thanks gltea, I have learned to use the motor to raise the anchor after hurting some muscles a few times. Works well by running enough line to the stern and letting go of the bow. I do not plan on spending the hurricane season in the Bahamas, my family would freek and so would I and besides the Erie cannal is calling. I should be headin north in Late May.

Fair winds. Lynx

Hi James,

If anyone had been around when I was trying to haul that anchor up, they would have laughed their heads off.  I was running back and forth from the bow to stern in an effort to keep steering her into the wind.  Backing it off from other directions didn't work either.  I am an old taildragger pilot, I can't believe I didn't come up with the idea of running the anchor rode back to the stern ::).

I wish I had mentioned this little episode before now. Maybe I would still own The Edge.  This was one of the reasons I sold her after I broke the tip off my collar bone.

I know what you mean, I have done some of the same things before figureing them out. I think I will start a thread call SailFar boat handling tips. Sure is different that the big guys.

Sarah - what do you mean by a "10' sender"?

And - do either of y'all know about using an anchor ball (http://www.southbeachfishing.com/XTreme/viewtopic.php?t=10)?
Title: Re: Lynx Nov BAHAMAS!! / Made it to Bimini Bahamas!!
Post by: gltea on January 26, 2008, 09:44:27 AM
Hi CapnK,

I meant a 10-pound sender.  I corrected  that.  I believe it could also be called an anchor ball.  It is a weight I slide down the rode when I want to help the chain stay on the bottom.  Is this what you are referring to?  It might also be called a sentinel.  It works great.

Oh! I see - 'kellet' is the word I use for that, but - I gotcha. :) Yo comprendo! ;D

Gltea-

Most people refer to that weight as an anchor angel, sentinel or kellet.  :) An anchor ball is usually the dayshape hoisted into the rigging to indicate that you're at anchor during the daytime. ;)

also known as a "kellet"

OK, all at one time now...
"It's also called..." ;D

Dan - the anchor ball I was referring to is a whole different thing, not a day shape. Check the link, it's a good technique. :)

Charles Brennan over on TSBB has used a similar technique for years. He's owned and sailed ( mostly single hand) the same 18 footer for going on 30 years now and has worked out a BUNCH of tricks

He made a long post sometime ago on TSBB with step by step pictures.  The BIG difference between the method you show and his, is that he has a second line leading to the rode, from the cockpit, so he can haul the anchor rode back from there, without the need to move the boat forward.

I'll see if I can find the post and get a link.

I posted here about this a while back...I now use his technique on my small boat and it works GREAT.  The first time, I had some difficulty in recovery, but that was operator error.

I tied an anchor bouy to the end of my anchor and raise it from their with a rode to the stern. About the same tech but twice as much rode.

Obviously, the anchor buoy technique would have trouble with an all chain rode. :)  Looks interesting otherwise, so I might try it once the boat is back in the water.

There is really no sand in the Bahamas it is just ground up rock. Small and flat. There is also grass. I have not been able to set my anchor in the light sand and have seen boats drag and not be able to set the anchor. Always allow time to find another anchorage incase you cannot get a set. Also note that any major storm can change the bottom so that there is not "Sand" anymore.  You also ned an anchor that will cut through grass. As far as I know this is a plow type.

Green Turtle Cay was nice. I stayed at the Bluff House Marina that would credit your slip towards meals (on edit, this ends around March 15 every year). Nice if you wanted to eat ashore for a while. Bluff House Marina is a little more livelier than Green Turtle Marina. It may change.

Here is a sunset from Green Turtle restaurant -

Nice little town way to many roosters for me. I was woken up in Man of War every morning with them and do not want to anchor in another town with them.

I am in Marsh Harbor now -
It is so crowded than it was in Nov. Starting peak season soon. Still places to anchor for me. Still the same problems and the paid internet - OII.net - is much worse. It took me over 1 hr to download these 4 photo's.  This is the only town  in the Abaco's with 24 hr poilice and their is no water police in the harbor. Everybody speeds. Here is one taken through my window -

As usual, I am anchored in 1 1/2 foot of water and, as usual, they come speeding by and about 2 a day break their props. ;D :D ::)

Marsh Harbor is a nice anchorage but has gotten quite crowded and far too busy. There is no respect for the 5 MPH speed limit and power boats will come so close to you, one or two times an hour, to make it very dangerous. I suggest fishing when in Harbors. Most boats only have out 1 anchor out and when a major wind shift happens they drag, all anchorages. I was in 2 feet of water and was in no danger of being dragged into. There is also a noise problem. Dogs are barking all night long and there is a noisy bird. I wish I had brought a dog whistle. A lot of the Cays have birds making noise to wake you up and they do not care.
Hopeing these fronts will calm down I have taken a slip at Bluff House Marina in Green turtle Cay for a month. Quite here and not so much traffic.

Sea of Abaco looking North to Marsh Harbor -

I thought  would post a few of the pics from our Sea Pearl sail through the Exuma Cays last week.

Here is a link to a Google Map of the route;

After spending a few days acclimating at Palm Bay Beach Club
(http://sailfar.net/gallery/albums/userpics/10375/normal_IMG_0635.JPG)
Where somebody had sent up this fish kite that stayed up by itself for 3 days and would have stayed up for a week with the steady 10 to 15 knot breeze.
We sailed out of Barreterre northward along the Cays, with the wind coming from the East shifting slightly from South to North. The Sea Pearls  were perfect for the occasion,

Lignumvitae was a great campsite that we did a layover on providing great snorkeling where we saw shark and barracudas

Another camp was at Big Farmers Cay
(http://sailfar.net/gallery/albums/userpics/10375/normal_IMG_0664.JPG)
From where we went to dinner at the Ocean Restaurant in Little Farmers Cay
We made a great lunch stop at a beach on Gualin Cay

That was an iguana sanctuary
(http://downloads.c-2.com/photos/1208307109.jpg)
Our final camp was at Sandy Cay off Staniel Cay where they would routinley feed the sharks and rays
(http://sailfar.net/gallery/albums/userpics/10375/normal_IMG_0692.JPG)
Our flight back to Georgetown provided an opportunity for a picture of sand waves formed around the Cays

"As usual, I am anchored in 1 1/2 foot of water and, as usual, they come speeding by and about 2 a day break their props."

Lynx - Sort of reminds you of a duck decoy.  ::)    Nice work!
IU wonder if we can replicate that idea all up and down the ICW?

Grand read. Thanks for all you efforts to keep us up to date.

Thanks.

The Crossing took about 10 hrs. There is tidal currents up to 3 mph in the cuts in and in the ICW.

I have been back in the USA a week and I wanted to put some final thoughts on my 5 months
Bahamas cruise.

Doing something for 5 months does change someone. I do not know what yet - but seeing the
USA again with all the people and stuff was culture shock. I do not drink much and do not do
drugs. Those types of parties I stayed away from. It rarely was below 68 degrees and most of
the time sunny with a few clouds. Very nice. If it was little warmer and it may have been to
warm to sleep well. From what I was told it was a warm winter in the Abaco's. Of the 5 months
I spend 3 of them on a Mooring Ball or in a slip. I found the holding to be poor and very few
places to anchor offered protection from all winds. I saw to many boats drag including myself.
The water was so nice. That alone made the trip worth it. I am glad that I went. I really think
that the Abaco's is a great place to start cruising, there is so much to learn and it is easy to
get to safety if in trouble.

Some of the problems I created – (others say they have not had these)
The Abaconians are a proud people and have been told how to do things so many different
ways. I made the mistake of telling them how to do things. I suggest that you do not. They
have been told so many times already and if they wanted to change they would have. If you
have problems with the way they are doing things then leave. When you offend someone
you may not have a pleasant experience in the next day or 2.

They need money, just like in the USA, and will try to get more out of you, just like in the USA.

The Quality and Caliber of service is less that what I expected. I should have done it myself
or left. I was not expecting so many people not knowing much English. I also suggest that
one should not go to non-tourist areas.

When I took cash out from a Bank, everybody knew how much.

I was a bit naïve to believe that there "Was no Crime in the Abaco's".
This is my observations  - the cruisers are the ones who are breaking the law most – speeding
in harbors, stealing water and showers, anchoring in mooring ball fields, etc. The tourists
are next and then the locals. I see very few non-working/local people jailed except for fighting.
(I should note that you can say that you are going to hit someone and in the Bahamas it is
the same as hitting them). The jailable crimes that I saw were mostly related to drugs. A few
was because people did not have enough money for food. However this number was about
10% of the small Island population per year. The numbers are few.

Summer '07 and winter '07 – '08 season has been slow, not much money coming in. Next
winter season may be slower. If so there may be more crime for food and less places open.
I do not think it will ever be as bad as what one would expect in the USA but you should
take more precautions than in the past.

There is a Bahamas politician who does not want the cruisers there. As a group we
probably spend less per person and complain more. However, we also promote to a lot
of people. During peak season there is an estimate $ 1,000,000 USD per month spent by
the cruisers in the Bahamas. That does not include any of the people who come to the
Bahamas through reading or listening to our adventures. The Bahamian Government
must come to terms with this. We can spend less money cruising in the USA than in the
Bahamas.  The holding is better, goods are cheaper, food is better/cleaner, better medical s
ervice and we have more rights.

Let me end by saying I am glad that I came and thank the Bahamians who service me and
allowed me to be there.  One always weighs where one will spend their time. For me it
will be in the USA winter '08 – '09.  I am glad that you enjoyed my pictures.

Hi Lynx,

Great trip report and pix! Brought back some nice memories for me!

The vines are trying to take over your trailer in my driveway. I hit 'em with some weedkiller yesterday.
