this is a non-specific thread...to take a little wind out of facebooks sails....post any sailing related status...just as a "check-in" about sailing. we know we don't post because we want to see our own boats etc....but because we want to trade it for others boat pics, thoughts...hit me!
as for me, I continue to work on my O'Day 26 "tiny house project rehab". She is out on the drive. She's damp under the mast. I have no recoring experience but am trying to get up the nerve to start it next week. We plan to keep this boat in a rented slip in Florida and use it to escape our cold Indiana winters a few weeks each year.
I am lucky to have a beautiful easy going wife that will sail with me on most any boat. On the weekends we are racing a 500 dollar Y- Flyer on Midwestern lakes. A new mainsail would probably move us up quite away in the finish results! But it is all fun.
What's your current status?
p.s. as usual I posted in the wrong category...if anyone can move this to the general discussion thread, I'll owe ya a beer.
Well...The fleet has increased in number but entropy of the total fleet has also increased! :( Throw in family medical matters and I haven't been sailing since February. :'(
People are going to start thinking I would rather work on an old boat then sail one.
Here is my newest old boat, a Luger Leeward http://triton190.blogspot.in (http://triton190.blogspot.in)
We are sailing and totally enjoying our Com-Pac 23. I have also been doing some racing against the big boys.

Dang! Tetra looks sharp! Looks great in the racing vid. I bet she surprised some folks!
Got married. Pretty much took the wind out of this summer's sailing. No worries, because fall is coming soon and that is when the best sailing is.
I actually did get out a couple weekends ago. When I left the dock there was virtually no power. I managed to slowly motor to a nearby anchorage so I could dive the boat and scrape the prop. There were a lot of barnacles. It took awhile. Learn from Adam and don't leave your boat sad and neglected in her slip, or you too may find she doesn't want to go out when you are finally ready.
Congrats Adam! (on getting married ;) )
Yes, congratulations Adam, and fair winds with your fall sailing.
Adam.....ya kinda snuck that "I got married" in there :)
Best wishs to both of you for a life of laughs and adventure!!
Any pictures to share?
Yes, congrats Godot.
Congratulations to you and yours Godot! Does your bride enjoy sailing?
She enjoys sailing. Not as much as I do; but she is certainly tolerant of my heading out. A couple years ago we took a month to sail to Martha's Vineyard/Block Island/Newport, RI/Mystic Seaport/New York City/Cape May. She is supportive of my dream of long term/distance cruising. She may not sail with me all the time (I don't think offshore slogs are her thing...at least not yet); but will likely fly into interesting places I end up. Not a bad deal.
congrats and I hope your future is full of fair winds and following seas
Adam, I think I Congratted you already, but if not - then Congrats! :)
Kevin - what kind of dinghy is that, and have you run a motor on it? If so, how'd it go?
It's a Takacat Lite! Love it, works great to get the dog back on the boat.
Looking to get an outboard soon, right now we just row it. :)

Gorgeous kids. LOVE the grin on the girl :)
Did you have NE winds today. We did on Matagorda. Strange.
And welcome aboard
Thanks! I am sure proud of em.... Yes weird east and north winds. Normally I can sail up and down the bay at will :-0

That boat seems plenty big to them, I bet... :)
Heh... Yeah but my oldest daughter has declared we need a boat with "two cabins". :-) I don't want to go too big but standing headroom and a private head would open up the experience to the wife and others.... and extend my range. The adjustable draft is ideal for here though...

Lost all wind in my sails! :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( Wife/first mate of 17yrs decided she didn't want to be married anymore and split 6 weeks ago. No warning, no discussion, no signs.....just gone.... Toughest 6 weeks of my life, lost nearly 30lbs and just can not concentrate on anything....So to say I haven't even thought about the boat is an understatement.
However, my head has started to clear and I'm trying to decide my lifes new direction. Thinking of moving the entire show back to Mass where I am originally from. Lots of family and support. I have decided at this point to keep my Alberg as it is completely paid for and in its current condition is not worth much...Although I could part her out and get a good amount of money. I believe I love the boat too much to do that. So summer 2016 has not been too good for this guy
Sorry to bring this thread down but you asked :P

Been there. Worst feeling ever. Hang in there, though. It will take time (a disturbing amount of time, if yours is anything like mine); but eventually it gets better.
Fair winds and good thoughts for you Cruiser2B. My situations were not the same but I've been thru it twice. It gets better. Family and friends are important about now. Good luck.
darn, that's rough. If you see us at the dock in Portsmouth this fall, we'll buy you a beer and toast to whatever's next for ya.
Had the same. Most of the old timers on the board saw it happen. As others have said,, it gets easier..
Been five years now
Sent you a PM also
this past Sunday Bianca and I got our O'Day 23 out of her couple of month slumber for a little sail out of Anna Maria Fl. a friend snapped our picture from the Cortez bridge. If we can get away from work, on the middle of next month, we will sail her down to Cayo Costa island for a small boat mess-about with the SW Florida Trailer Sailors. I am really looking forward to it!
Hope you all are fine....and having some fun.
P.S hang in there Cruiser2B. Very best wishes to your bright future.
Had the good fortune to hook up with the WCTSS on three occasions (even from over here in Texas) Great group of folks, and I've loved Cayo Costa. Have fun, and tell Hodinnot Charlie says hello.
Your rainbow sail makes me happy.
Thank you guys, I appreciate all the comments and PMs. I know many people experience this, I just understand why this is so common......
It does get easier each day, ever so slightly...This week the heat and humidity is supposed to break. I am going to try and get back on the boat.
Running the dolphin tour boat tomorrow, looking forward to that!
Ralay, Thank you, I would gladly drink a beer, look forward to it. When do you guys expect to be coming through? I am going up to Boston area in early Oct, will you guys still be there?

We're leaving Boston with the boat mid-October, but we'll be gone to TX for the first two weeks of Oct for family/business stuff.

That's the pits.. Sorry to hear about your mate jumping ship on you.

thank you for sentiment....it sucks big time...
where are you located? Ill be up in that area 2 week in Oct if you'd like to grab a beer or three :D. I'll be in Dighton or Tiverton, RI, so not too far from Beantown.
We like meeting sailfar'ers. Woody takes weekend shifts occasionally, but usually, we're just farting around on the island. Send me or Woody a PM if you plan to come through.

it's only been up for 5 minutes, so we only have 3 members, but.....I just started a group on Fb where anyone is welcome to buy or sell a trailer sailboat...or related parts. You are welcome to use it anyway you see fit.

Dan in Annapolis. If any of you are in town let me know, we'll get together.
Sorry to hear about your new twist of life Cruiser2B. I remember when talking to you about the Beta you had a lot of plans. Don't give up on the boat, in fact the work will help keep the mind going forward. Which is what must happen and will in time.
my current status....I was just dinkin' around with my O'Day 26 out on my driveway...and had the random thought....about 60s, 70s, and 80's production boat builders. what a great run many of them had! they sure got a lot of people out on the water! got a ton of boats out the door...pre-computer! to think about, say, O'Day (the General Motors of boats back then) offering a lineup between 12 and 40 feet in several increments. Its a model that wont work well for most today...but many early companies sure gave it their all. My hat is off to them!
Ain't that a fact Lance!!
Oday was an Olympic sailboat racer....at least he loved boats.
So many great old companies.....
C&C, CS, Cape Dory....the list is. L o n g .......
Yep....the golden years....
;D
Like my 1961 Seafarer? Frank- here anchored in Pipe Creek, Exumas
yes Charlie - when you think about all the steps it took to conceive, build, and deliver your sweet ship to it's first owner....and to repeat it over and over. Its just a great accomplishment.
Suffering through another winter.... 8)
Nice pic Cap!
2 random thoughts on this cold gray Indiana day....1) small cruising boat makers should consider making the front mooring cleats bigger from the start, with beefy backers so that they would actually hold up long term for anchoring. along with a standard short bow sprit...to both hold an anchor and tack an A- spinnaker. Aftermarket are almost always flimsy I think. 2) I was thinking about my ever growing attraction to small cruising boats....when I first started I thought I would work my way up size-wise over time...but then I came across sailFar and listened to you guys and it rang a lot of truth bells in my head....but what really sent me over the top...was when I first got a smart phone and slowly started to understand its capabilities. To think that suddenly you have navigation, all your books, albums, banking, camera in the palm of your hand! Its not a phone, it's a portal. Makes travel in a small boat so clutter free and such a pleasure!
Anyway, that's my current status. Hope you all are having some fun!
Totally agree on cleats, both bow and stern. Tehani originally had a single surfboard style cleat on centerline on her bow and a 4 inch same style each side aft
She now carries a pair of 12 inch Herreshoffs on the bow and a 6 inch each side astern. All have very heavy, spread out backing plates
Here's the bow cleats- Bronze
my quick current status>>>when I am reading people's stories about boat ownership and my eyes read the phrase "we are considering moving up"......my brain hears it as "oh, they want to downsize, good for them".
here is a little table I slapped together out of construction scrap, that spans the cockpit of my O'Day 23 using no legs. This has worked out really well for us...allowing 2 people to lean back against the cabin, and stretch out with their legs beneath. The next one I make will be wider and a better fit, as I wasn't at the boat when making this one. Also we have found we can make an inexpensive, and quickly removable fiddle for a camp stove using a section of threaded rod with wingnuts. Hope you all are having some fun. Come on Spring!
Neat!
Looks like your lil buddy is patiently waiting for his coffee 😃😃
yep! he knows there is bacon in the cooler.
The Com-Pac 23 is for sale as we ready our new boat for the water. Hoping to get to the marina this weekend to wash and wax the hull. Mast gets stepped on April 15th with a launch on April 29th!

Nice! What is she?
CD 28???
She is a 1985 Cape Dory 26. It's gonna be the perfect size for us. :)
Congrats!!
Pretty boat!
Love the simplicity of an outboard!
Edit to say: and shallow draft too!!
We would love a bunch of pictures of that 26! Did having the Compac 23 (after having had a 30) change your outlook on smaller boats? Can you share any thoughts on that. Would be most appreciated!
Never did have a 30 footer. The Cape Dory is our largest boat yet. The 23 was great but no standing headroom. I think the CD 26 will be the perfect fit for at least the next few years. There is talk of a 30 footer someday but right now the costs out weigh the need. :)
I am sorry Kevin - my mistake - I confused you with another sailor that had a catalina 30 prior to a Com-Pac 23. Have a great time with your new ship!
S/V Dorothea is in!

This is the way all our boats should look.
Not sure how my post got deleted. But I will repost. It is with regret that I've decide to abandon my Alberg 30 project. Just too many memories.
I've decided to move forward with becoming a full time liveaboard. This week I purchased a Westsail 32. She will become my new home. I plan on moving aboard by the end of the year. I will start a new blog as well.
A fine ship!
She will take care of you.....no matter where you want to go...
Congrats!
Sorry. I did it by accident. Read
On my phone and accidentally removed it
great looking vessel
Don't take the accidental delete personally.
Dumb butt here (me...not Charlie) has deleted great posts by both Adam "Godot" and Kurt "Capt K" in the past.
It happens...
Great looking boat!
You should start a separate thread about acquiring her and moving aboard.
And yes...more pictures!!! 😄
Welcome to the Westsail club. Hope you can get your other boat sold and move aboard soon. Hope to see you bobbing off Hospital point I we make it South this winter
Congrats on the Westsail! Good choice!!
Congratulations! Way to go!
DORY DAY! (https://youtu.be/nQbTDjXlpNc) ...video.
dang she looks good
Very nice. What are your summer plans? Will we see you out and about?
such a sweet little ship! such honest lines. honest lines are beautiful lines! Congratulations!
Congrats, Kevin, on a good looking boat.
Also looking forward to seeing another W32 out on the water! It would be great to go for a sail with you next time I'm in Virginia Beach.
Nice Kevin!
Woody, you are more than welcome anytime. Gonna take her out for a sail tomorrow after work!
The Cape Dory is in but the first sail ended with a steering issue. Working on fashioning a new bigger key.

Rudder is repaired and my wife just completed her ASA 101 & 103 classes!
Let's sail!
Wow what a quick Summer! Dorothea is getting hauled out tomorrow and so begins the Fall/Winter work list. It was a blast!

Boat looks good Kev.
Yup, summer is coming to a close up this way.
But you know, so many down south don't use their boats during the summer cause it's to dam hot.
Sorry, folks, I almost never log onto this site anymore. But here I am: Crème Brûlée was sailed from her mooring to the local boat yard on Sunday, stripped the next day. She awaits haul-out, which is scheduled for Oct. 31. Had an eerily beautiful, mile October and a very nice September. Spring and most of the summer was not all that great for sailing on Buzzards Bay.
Best to all,
--Joe
Good to hear from ya!
Seems most of the NE was like that...crappy spring-early summer but beautiful ending to the season.
Hope your haulout goes smooth.
I'm hauling out late next week too...
Any adventures from last season to share?
Have fun

do you ever giggle and shake your head...when reading a boat ad that says something like - "shoal keel version, (only draws 4'11")?
Yep....
Kinda funny.
Doesn't sound too shoal to me either.
I guess Allure at 3ft 8in is "ultra shallow draft" by those standards 🤣
PS....my sympathy to Patriots fans 🤣🤣

It's all relative. If the normal keel is seven feet, then a sub five foot keel seems shoal indeed.
Seeker is at 3'6". An advantage of full keels.
My Islander 36 is the "shoal draft" version, and draws (my best figure) 4'9". The reg'lar old I36 draws 6.08', according to sailboatdata.com
Draft is pretty much the only real issue I have with the Alpa 11.50 (~38' LOA): she draws 6.23'. Deeper than I am tall, by a half a foot. Zoiks. :)
I like being able to stand in the water next to my boat, and see the deck. :) But short of going multihull, or dealing with the intricacies/foibles of a centerboard, it seems that you'll be hard-pressed to find a boat with sufficient displacement (or IOW, stowage) for long term, long distance, self-sufficient 4 season liveaboard and travel - including the ability to be say 30+ days away from provisioning resources - without being pretty hardcore 'only the bare basics'.
Being skinny and sneaking right up to the beach is great when that is the situation, but conversely I guess 6' isn't really much at all to think about when the closest land is a mile away - straight down. :)
I met a crew at the SSCA gam a couple years ago that where heading down the ICW and then to the Bahamas on a boat (Tumultuous Uproar?) with an 8' :o draft. They did run hard aground in the Bahamas and had some difficulty, as I recall, getting into a boatyard for repairs; but they made it happen. Certainly more draft than I would prefer for shoal waters; but I bet it really is nice on offshore passages. As I recall it was a very fast, high pointing boat. I believe they are somewhere in the Panama area now-a-days; but I could be wrong.
Compromises. Always compromises.

Yea, tough being a Pats fan last night but a winning streak like they've had was going to end someday.
My Sabre 28 draws 4'-4", another reason I bought her. Seems most of the boats up here in New England draw 6'+. Most of the "modern" shoal keels are wings. I wouldn't want to ground one of them. That has anchor effect written all over it.
it would be fun to USCG document a boat with a home port of Oak Island, and name her The Money Pit.
Happy New Year Everyone! who is doing some sailing this week? post us some pictures! we're desperate!
I'm flying to Guatemala tomorrow. Headed to the Rio Dulce to spend a week on a friend's boat there. Will post a report and pictures on return.
Wow! That is an outstanding destination for this time of year, and a huge difference from some of your previous winter adventures. Will you be diving on the coral, and admiring the fish?
I am anticipating our second snow this Friday, wishing to be far south of here. We will need sunny pictures to keep the morale up here in the northern states. Have a lot of fun!
