This is a Living Document, and as such, it changes from time to time. If you would like to post images to the Gallery, please read through this thread - there is some great and pertinent info here. Have fun! (Last update - Dec 2011, CapnK)
------------Gallery------------
Members in good standing who want to start a new Album in the Gallery should send me a PM (http://sailfar.net/forum/index.php?action=pm;sa=send;u=1) through the forum, and I will set it up for you... :)
---------------------------------
IMPORTANT: About Image sizes and the Gallery:
Picture sizes for the Gallery are limited in 2 ways - by "File Size", and by "Dimension".
In the Gallery, the biggest File Size for a picture is 8 Megabytes (8024 kB) (upgraded 5/17, for FORUM Attachments, they can be 4MB size(4096kb) ), and the Dimensions of the picture in the Gallery cannot be larger than 5600 Pixels in either height or width.
That said, it is usually better for everyone *especially those on mobile or satellite connection with possible data limits* if your pictures have a file size of under 250kB, and that the dimensions of the picture don't exceed 800 pixels in height or width. This makes it nice for people who are not on broadband connections, they won't have to wait forever to see your pictures download, and they won't hit data caps while admiring your bottom paint or brightwork. ;) It also makes the pictures load faster for everyone, regardless of their connection.
There is a free, simple picture editor that you can use to resize your pictures, it is called "Irfanview", and you can download it from the 'net. The program is less than 2M in size. The website is here. (http://www.irfanview.com/)
There are also apps for phones/tablets which are VERY simple and easy to use.
---
A note about resizing your pictures, from someone who does a lot of it: :)
Before you do, make a New Folder (maybe named "Resized Images") on your computer, and make/put a *Copy* of the image(s) you want to resize into that folder. Do your resizing work on the Copy *only*.This way your Original image will remain untouched and in it's original size, and only the Copy will be altered.
Also, I like to add something to the resized image name to let me know that it has been resized - usually, I'll just append "web" to the name. (Example: "IMG_12.JPG" would be saved in its resized form as "IMG_12_WEB.JPG"). By just adding "web", I can easily know which Original, large picture the smaller resized copy came from.

How to post photos in the Gallery
1. First, be logged in at the Gallery. :)
2. To do that, right-click the link at the end of this sentence, and select "Open in New Window" (or "New Tab"): Gallery Link (http://sailfar.net/gallery)
3. The Gallery page will open in a new window, and will have a Login link up top, towards the left side of the screen. If you have pop-up stopper software installed, it may try to keep the window from opening. If so, you will need to disable the pop-up stopper temporarily, or figure out how to let the window come up in some other manner (there are too many different programs out there for me to describe how you can do this, sorry).
4. In the new window you will see the Gallery page. On the top right side of that page, there is a menu. In this menu, click on "Home".
5. The page will give you a brief message about going into Admin mode. Wait a few seconds, and a row of grey-colored buttons will appear on the page, in the upper middle. These buttons are labeled "Create/order my albums", "Modify my albums", "My profile", and "Sort my pictures".
6. Click on "Create/order my albums".
7. The window will change, you will see a blue-bordered box titled "Album Manager". At the bottom of that box, click on "New". A "New Album" will appear in the box, and below that at the bottom you will see another area that says "New Album" in it. Type in the name you want to have for your Album in the lower area, and the upper area will automatically change to be the same as what you type.
8. After you have typed in your Album name, click on the "Apply Modifications" button at the very bottom of the page. A small box will pop up to confirm that you want to make the modifications, click "OK".
9. The window will change, you will see a message saying "Creating album 'Your_Albums_Name'". Click on the "Continue" button.
10. You will be returned to the Gallery home page automatically, and there is now an Album created just for you. Yee-ha! :)
Now, to put photos in your album...
Note: There is a size limit on pictures you can put into the Gallery. The pictures will need to be no larger than 1600 pixels (in height or width), and the File Size of the picture cannot be over 2M (megabytes). If your pictures are larger than this, you will need to resize them *prior* to Uploading. You can do that with a free program off of the internet called "Irfanview" ( see this post for more info on that topic (http://sailfar.net/forum/index.php?topic=10.0)). Recommended sizes for pictures are 600-800 pixels wide (or tall), and a File Size of 100K (kilobytes) or less.[/b]
1. In the menu at the upper right side of the Gallery page, click on "Upload file". The window will change, the blue box will have the label "Upload File", and there will be spaces for you to put in picture file names.
2. Click on the first "Browse" button. This will open a small box showing the files on your computer. Navigate to the photo you want to Upload, select it, and click the "Open" button. The small box will go away, and you will see the name of the file you chose in the area next to the Browse button which you clicked.
3. Repeat the above step for multiple photo uploads, you can put up to 5 photos.
4. When finished selecting photos, click "Continue" at the bottom of the page.
5. You should get a message telling you that your Uploads were successful, click "Continue".
6. You will see a small version of your picture in the upper left corner of the Upload file box, with the relevant file information to the right of that. Below this file information is a small area that says "Select Album". Click the black arrow on the right side, and select the Album which you created (note: you can only post pictures into *your* album, however you can have more than one album).
7. You can also enter a File name and a File description on this page. That is a good thing to do, since people like to know what it is they are seeing in your pictures. You do not *have* to name it or describe it, but what the heck, why not? :)
8. After completing the above, click "Continue".
9. If you uploaded more than one file, repeat the above steps for each file. When you have completed the last file, you will get a page with a message that says "You have successfully placed all files". Click "Continue", and you will go back to the Gallery home page.
Congratulations, you are done!!! :)

Being a newbie
How do I create my album
Iceman
(Edited December 2011 by CapnK, as the content of this post is not applicable any more with the current setup. See first post in thread re: Gallery account setup. Thanks! :) )
Ice -
When you go to the Gallery at http://sailfar.net (http://sailfar.net), if you are logged in here you should be automagically be logged in there already.
At any rate, after you are logged in there (user name and password are the same as what you use here), you'll see some buttons in the middle of the screen, grey colored ones is what I see, one of them is for creating your own album. Name it whatever you'd like, and click whatever buttons you need to. (Sorry if I am being too techinical.... ;) )
If you have any problem, I can create the album for you - just let me know. If too many folks have trouble figuring it out, I'll make up a tutorial with pictures to show the steps.
I'm still getting used to this software myself, I haven't used it before on the other sites I've run. :)
Help
CapnK
I have created a monster..I thought I uploaded all my images successfully but as you can see on gallery page Ive made a mess of things
Maybe Ill just jpegs to you

Ice
CapnK!

I have had easier spinnaker sets and takedowns
Ice
Hey could someone tell me how to post some boat pictures I have saved in My Documents.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
This morning it looked so nice out I thought I'd leave it out.
S/V "Tina Marie" Cal 2-27
Do you want to post them in your gallery?
Then click User Galleries. You will need to create at least one album (you can put all your pics in one album, or have multiple ones). Then, when you click "Upload File" in the top nav bar, you can upload the image file from your computer. After the upload, you will be asked what album to put the file into.
You can embed pictures into your messages by using the "BBC Tag" button above (the one under the I for italics) to simply type the url between the img tags like this (remove the spaces I had to add to get it to post plain text):
[ i m g ] {url goes here} [ / i m g ]
I tried to create a NEW album of pics, put a get a message I have exceeded my quota
Are multiple albums possible??
Ice
Hmm, dunno Ice - I'll check that and get back as soon as I know, prolly in a few minutes...
Edit: OK, should be fixed now. The per-user disk quota was only 1 megabyte. I have change that to 10 MB. If someone needs more than that, we'll see what we can do. :)
I would *assume* that multiple albums are possible, since it let you create another. Try it now and see what happens.
I don"t understand the embedding principle
I would like to include a jpeg in my Voyager 26 post in the boat discussion page
Check out my ne albums
Ice
Capt'n,
When I click on the gallery it blinks and nothing happens.
Skipper Dave
Hi Dave -
What exactly are you clicking on? The link above in this thread, or something on the Gallery page?
Lotta neat pics in those albums, Ice - Thanks!
To put a pic in a post, the post must have this code in it:
[img]pictures-URL-location[/img]
The pictures URL location is its "address" on the web.
Example:
This picture -
(http://sailfar.net/gallery/albums/userpics/10012/normal_LMG.jpg)
is at this address:
http://sailfar.net/gallery/albums/userpics/10012/normal_LMG.jpg
which I got by Right Clicking on the picture, and selecting "Copy Image Location", and then pasting that between those [img] and [/img] tags.
If you click on the little picture icon in the "Add BBC Tags" area when you are writing a post, it will put in the "img" tags, and you just paste the picture URL in between them.
Note: I use the Firefox web browser - if you are using the Internet Exploder browser, it may say something slightly different than that, but what you want is the pictures location.
Check out the boat pic on boat discussion thread
I think I succeeded
Ice
Looks like you have it dialed in there, Ice. :) Congrats! ;D
I am clicking on the link above. Could it be that it is blocked from my computer here at work?
Skipper Dave
Hmm, Dave...
What about if you click on the link on the homepage -> sailFar (http://sailfar.net) Can you get there that way?
I just noticed it says...a pop-up was just blocked.
Skipper Dave
Rather a Pop-up window was just blocked
OK then the problem is on your end, because it isn't a pop-up... hmmm... The Gallery software is integrated with this Forum software, so that users can have the same name and password. That would be the only reason that I can guess that it thinks there is a pop-up - this Forum controls the Login for both Forum and Gallery...
What about if you Right Click on the link, and then select Open in New Window or New Tab? Does that work?
Out of curiosity, what browser are you using, and are you using some type of pop-up blocker or other software designed to do that? Is there a way, inside of that softwares settings, for you to tell it that a particular site is OK? That's about all I can think of, except you may be ableto type in the address manually...

is it possible to put a button up there by the home, help, search, profile, and logout buttons?
Been meaning to do that... D'oh! It'll be up by the chat link, in the News bar.
Thx for the reminder! :)
You guys may already have this figured out, but just in case. When you are in the gallery, if you hit home, you still stay in the gallery. But if you click on the Sunset picture, Sailfar.net, it takes you back to the forum section.
Irfanview can be downloaded on your computer to help with picture resizing etc. It is a free service. The website below is a tutorial, step by step for Irfanview which can be downloaded as well to help get the pict sized right etc for posting. Found it takes out the guess work in the final steps.
Hope it helps those who are struggling to get the picts to the correct size. :)

CapK,
I have a question - How does one browse the photo galleries.
When I click on the Member Galleries link (shows 42 Albums w/370 files).
All I get is 4 random files and 4 latest additions. No list of Galleries.
Is it possable to Browse the Picture Albums?
Thanks,
paddlefoot
Click on the Sailfar.net banner up above.
When that window opens, click on Members galleries. That'll bring up a bunch of thumbnails with memebers names under them. Click on one of those and you are there.
nope -
When I click on the Member Galleries link (shows 42 Albums w/370 files).
All I get is 4 random files and 4 latest additions. No list of Galleries/thumbnails.
Paddlefoot
Are you clicking the "Member Galleries" link while logged in? Your login from the forum should be the same as the login for the gallery side, but if I recall correctly, you DO have to manually log into the gallery the first time.
Paddlefoot, when you are in the 'random" picture area, click on "members galleries" in the upper left, that will then take you to the proper place you're looking for.
Not sure why we have to click one more time to get there, but it's how it works now.
No Joy.
Signed in
Clicked on member galleries 1 - 2- 3 --8 times.
Still shows NO User Galleries
Color me puzzled
paddlefoot
interesting- brings up three pages of thumbnails for me.
Beyond my ken.
Just to throw some mud on to the subject.
I went to another computer (I'm at work - so I have about
350 to choose from) that I had not used before.
signed into sailfar and was able to see the thumbnails,
all 3 pages - get this - one time - then the same stuff.
more info
I went back to my computer - and installed Firefox -
Guess what - no problems whatsoever.
I can only suspect that it is a combination of
WinXP
SP2
IE6.0
and the local network security.
(thank you Bill)
Soooo WTF I'll just use Firefox
Paddlefoot
answer is - Mozilla!!!
Hmmm. Now it is doing the same thing for me, and I'm using......Mozilla. Seems like I've seen this problem before, now that I think about it.
Odd behavior, that.
Still working just fine for me, on Mozilla. I click and get right to the thumbnails of the members galleries.
Strangely enough, mine comes up first ;D.

Odd behavior, that.
It started happening again - tried another computer and same-same.
after going thru the 3 pages they would not display again - just the
message 'no user albums'
While I have not figured out WHY it does it I did find out that if I delete
the cookie for/from sailfar.net I am able to see the photo albums again.
MeThinks that site admin needs to check out the behavior of the cookies.

Very interesting. Now it is working fine for me, again. I should be on the cookie as before, so I just don't know.
Very odd.

Yep odd - but repeatable.
The work around is to use Firefox and config it to dump all cookies on exit.
paddlefoot
Very odd- I still haven't changed a thing on my cookies and it keeps coming up fine for me. I use Mozilla and run XP
Kurt,
I tried to edit the caption of one of my own pics in the gallery, and got a message saying "you do not have permission to access that page" when I clicked "Save Changes" after making my edits.
I also tried to move a pic from one of my albums to another and got the same message.
Is this the expected behavior, or should we be able to edit our own pictures?
Capn Smollett-
Sounds a bit odd that you're not allowed to edit your own photos... maybe the permissions are set wrong on the galleries
Dan,
Were you successful in editing one of your (if only for a test)? Knowing that would help narrow it down to a possible site-wide issue or a per-user issue.
Thanks.
I thought I saw someone mention this before, but I don't see the message...
I went to update the caption on one of my photo's and I was informed the I don't have permission to do that. That can't be right. Is there a way to fix this?
How can I view other members' galleries? When I click on "sailFar Gallery" and then on "Member Galleries", under User List it says "There are no user galleries"... Did I accidentally change a setting somewhere? Thanks for any assistance,
Bill
You must have cause it just worked fine for me.
This pops up from time to time; I occasionally see it, too.
Kurt is aware of it (or should be) - there have been numerous threads on this topic.
Best advice I can offer is to try again later (in few days) - perhaps logout, delete cookies and log back in (If you are logged into the forum, you should be logged into the gallery; if you have to log in manually, credentials should be the same).
I've not seen a consistent fix for this intermittent problem. :(
Is it possible to add pics to an existing gallery? If so, how do I do it?
I created a gallery this morning (to see if I could - I could!), and I was able to delete a file, but I can't figure out how to add a file. If I can't do that, I'll be sure to figure out what I want in a gallery before starting.
Thanks.
"Hi Bob" :)
If you are logged in, near the top of the page, you should see some links:
Home::My Gallery::Upload File::Logout
Upload File is the one you want. After you upload the file(s), you will be prompted to specify which gallery you wish to add them to. IIRC, you get a prompt per file, so you can upload a batch and assign them to different galleries.
Hope this helps,
--John
Thanks, John.
I'll go play with it!
John,
Your advice paid off. I was able to add a pic to the "test" gallery I created this morning.
Thanks.
Glad you got it, Bob. :)
Grog fer both of ya, more pics! ;D
Where did the galleries go? Clicking on "Member Galleries" tells me "There are no user galleries."
I know I accessed the galleries the other day. What am I doing wrong today?
Bob

Bob
Probably nothing. If you check this and other gallery related threads, you'll notice that this issue pops up from time to time.
"Try again later" is the best I can advise. At one point, I thought deleting my sailfar cookies helped resolve it, but later noticed that did not help. You can try that if you wish.
It's been a very frustrating thing in that it is very intermittent. Phase of the moon maybe?
So, patience is a virtue waiting for the galleries to reappear? :-)
Tried to attach a photo to a post, but I couldn't get it to work. The attachments upload directory was not writable, or something like that. Anybody know what I'm doing wrong? It happens everytime I try to attach a photo to a post.
Thanks in advance,
Bill
Bill, I don't think you can 'attach' photos to a post.
The method I use is to upload the photos to my gallery (http://sailfar.net/gallery/index.php), then link to them using the img tags (or click the little link above that looks like a photo to insert the img tags into your post).
If for some reason you don't want to use SailFar's gallery (your same userid and pw will work if you get prompted for credentials), you can use photobucket or imageshack, etc.
Does this help?
If you're on a PC, you can use Google's Picasa software to manage your photos and also use it to upload them to the Picasa website, where you can open an account. Makes it pretty easy to do. Then post a link to the images over at your picasa account.
What I'm trying to do is use a photo in a post like Bob did here...
http://sailfar.net/forum/index.php?topic=1226.0
... is this what you're describing using the gallery and an img tag?
Thanks for the help,
Bill
PS Just tried inserting the image tags, with the whole url from the gallery between the tags. All I got was the white boxes with the red "X".... Do I use a shortened address to include an image from the SailFar gallery?
Hi Bill -
This is the exact code that Bob used in that post:
[img width=650 height=430]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v612/BobWessel/f70706c5.jpg[/img]
In the preview, it is kind of hard to read, but it uses brackets, the straight (non-squiggly) version of these things:
{ } like so (made larger for easier visibility):
{img width=650 height=430}the URL goes here{/img} -
Note: replace the {} with []
Hope that helps you out!
I'll look into the attachments thing - it could be that we've just filled up the available space, and I need to add more. :)
Also, if you leave the width and height out, it should post the photo full size.
Quote from: AdriftAtSea on September 05, 2007, 04:25:26 PM

True, but...
One note about that: if a pic is posted which is wider than ~650, anyone with a screen set to 800 wide will have to sidescroll. Yuk! :)
Probably it is best to use the '650 width' value, but leave off the 'height' value, so that your pic doesn't get reproportioned incorrectly. :)
Code example of that:
{img width=650}the URL goes here{/img}
Thx for bringing that up, Dan.
You only want to use the width parameter if the photo is wider than 650 pixels, or I believe the software will upscale the photo to fill.. and that makes the smaller photos look really ugly.
Whew!!!!
I am glad to read this thread. I was just voyeuring others peoples boats when the member galleries disappeared. I thought somehow I deleted them and was concerned about a justifiable lynching.
Our Gallery will be offline for a day or two while I do some maintenance and upgrading. I'll post when I get it back up. Sorry in advance for any delay, but I am having to do this between doing "the work that buys boat stuff". :)
Any luck with the Gallery? I'm guessing the maintenance and upgraded didn't go as smoothly as hoped.
I know he was working on this until after 0230 last night and back at it at 0700 this morning... hope all goes well.
Everyone will have to pay him a bonus for overtime in their checks this month. ;)
For those of you who have not used the Gallery in the past you can find out how to use it here;
Topic: sailFar.net Image Gallery (http://sailfar.net/forum/index.php?topic=256.0).
Look forward to seeing some new pictures from everyone!
WRT the Gallery - the &%$#*&^# Gallery, I should say (due to software difficulties/peculiarities) :o :
It'll be a bit yet, a few more days it looks like. And a little different when it comes back. Whereas before you could go to the Gallery and be automagically logged in straight from the Forum, from now on out, the Gallery will require a separate login instance.
The reasons for this are mundane and at the same time complicated; suffice to say that it will make things easier on the back end in the future, which will mean maintaining the Gallery will become easier, which will result in no downtime. And no need for me to use language like "&%$#*&^#". Sorry y'all had to hear that... ;D
Status update:
Well, at looong last, I have the Gallery all working properly, pending some more testing by your faithful Moderators. :)
This means that sometime in the next few days-week, I will be migrating the Forum and Gallery to a new server, and also upgrading the whole website overall at that point in time. This will/might involve some downtime, but it should be less than 24 hours since I have everything staged and ready for the upgrade already.
I'll keep y'all posted, and try to give 24 hours notice before the transition. :)
Kurt....."you da man" I can only imagine what a PITA this was to do as well as how many hours (days) I'm sure I speak for everyone on this site in saying THANK YOU !!!!!! Have a grog ;) We all appreciate your time and efforts.
Thanks Frank! This means soon you can post *lots* more pics of your various and sundry boats and boat projects. ;D
Kurt:
Thanks to U some of us from Trlrsailor have another site to talk to each other on.
Bob is doing a nice job and building his dream beach boat!
Keep the pictures coming!
Has anyone heard from C.J./ Laura?
Capn'! Did you see my request for image gallery access? ;D
Oops, no - I didn't.
BUT...
Now I put in the *proper* email address for the Admin, so resubmit and we'll get it going. ;D
I'd like to post a picture of First Born in the gallery, signed in but cannot activate the picture system, need some help!
genewj :(
Gene, I am not sure what you mean by "activate the picture system"?
It doesn't look like you have an album yet, so assuming you are signed into the gallery you can press the button on top to create a gallery and upload your photos to it.
Wanted to upload some pics re: the problems I'm having with my rudder, the gallery says I dont exist as a user, even though i'm logged into sailfar forum, any ideas, what i'm doing wrong, cheers Max
max - Check your PM's - I created an account for you, and will send you your login info in the PM. :)
I can not seem to find the registration link for the gallery and I have only had 1 glass of wine! What am I missing?
I'm experiencing the same problem - I'm logged into the forum account, but the gallery login says I don't exist. I sent you a PM, Cap'n - did you happen to get it?
Thanks for any help you can give me!
Nate
Hi Nate -
I sent you a PM, info for the Gallery account I created for you is included. That means it *should* be working now - let me know! :)
I got your e-mail and PM - it's working now! Thanks so much for your help!
Nate
i am wanting to post some pics, i sent CaptK a request but no luck. Am I missing something? is it really this hard to post a picture here? I looked at the above replies from over a year ago but it will not let me log into the Gallery section, can anyone here help?
Just posting a pic is easy
Below the section where you type is a line that says "additional options" That brings up a "Browse" section where you can insert an address from your hard drive. Just double click on the pic you want, and hit post. Does have to be under 200 K. If it is somewhere else, highlight the URL, paste it into the section where you type, highlight it and click on the little picture icon up above in BBC tags. (second row, second from left) That'll surround it with some code that will allow it to show.
Can't answer the gallery question.
thank you....it is easy
KR,
I cannot log into the gallery. I've tried:
(1) My existing forum password
(2) A password you sent me a while back in a PM
(3) Clicking the "Forgot my password" link on the failed login page. This sent me a email with a link, and when I clicked that, it just took me to the login page (ie, no new password or even a password reset page).
Any insight?
I have not been able to RELIABLY use the gallery for several years.
Capt K -- I've lost the Password to log in to the sailfar gallery. Could - now cant
