Title: Allure 17/18
Post by: Frank on December 03, 2017, 03:48:46 PM
After several days of prep (the sun took its tole this summer) Allure was splashed on Friday. Crazy getting ready to leave home after being away so long, then the drive down to Florida, flight over and practicing my karate kid moves (wax on.....wax off)....I'm having a lazy day!
I'll put off posting pics unless it is some neat boat I've saw or other "new" place or thing. Don't want my Abaco posts to seem like Groundhog Day and after so many years here it kinda feels that way to me...  Will see how the season unfolds....would be nice to travel somewhere new.
I can say that is sure IS nice to be afloat here again!
Snow when I started the drive down....80 this afternoon. No complaints!

Frank
Some days you just shouldn't get out of bed unless you know there's going to be caffeine for sure.
I read your post 3/4 the way before i realized Allure 17/18 was a date not a boat type...im thinking what happened here.... so everyone enjoy a good chuckle on me :)

Hopefully motivate a few "on the fence" about coming over....
Or....motivate a certain "west coaster" to come back east, launch his pretty blue boat and get back over here!

Allure on her mooring in Black Sound
Nice sunset last night
Easy sail up to Manjack, quick visit and back today

Very Beautiful!  So glad to see her back in the water....  I spent a lot of time holding my breath while the various storms passed this year...

You going to try heading south this year?  Feed the pigs, check out Georgetown?  Maybe even Conception Island?

700 Islands beacon you my friend!

Ya gotta know you'd be that "west coaster" I'm talking about!!
Have company coming down twice this year so doubt I'll make it too far S.
Thinking Berry Islands, Eleuthera and back type of loop.
Hoping to see Faith floating again some day.....
The islands are calling.....

She has nice lines. I like the way you have the solar panel mounted.
Did you use the bimini frame to support it?
If you can please take some detailed pictures of the mounting system. I'd be interested in seeing it.

Thanks
Title: Re: Allure 17/18
Post by: Frank on December 07, 2017, 06:18:10 PM
Somewhere here there are several pics of the mount, but this one shows that the Bimini already had 2 vertical supports from the stern rail to the aft rail.
The 2 panel extensions bring it up about 10inchs further to allow a slight tip forward when needed as well as full tip aft
Hope you can see on this pic

Just back to Allure last night after a quick trip home for 10 days. I've barely been home this year and was already feeling guilty after only being there 2 weeks between boat trips. A combination of family and friend requests had me go back for "Christmas visits" and I'm glad I did. Ate way too much but it's the season... Made a point to stop at my old bulldozer operators for a visit. A wonderful man, Doug is 87 now! Sure doesn't seem 22yrs ago that we last worked together. Felt great seeing him and if I could pass this along... call in on an old co worker or friend .... you both will be glad you did!
After a -31 with windchill drive to Ottawa extremely early yesterday and a mess up of flights getting back... I was treated to this sunset on the way to Allure and these Christmas lights on my walk to dinner last night

Up at 4am today to make it into town and join in the old tradition here of marching through the streets at 5am singing Christmas carols.
They really get into the spirit...fun time.

Lights on the walk in
The singers with 2 drummers leading the way (PJs are exceptable at 5am)
Back at the boat before sunrise...

Had several Christmas pot lucks to go to....
Cruisers make their own fun.
Was nice as some old friends that were absent the last couple of years returned. Annie and Neville have 5 trans Atlantic's in and countless stream crossings. Nev is in his 80's now so they finally sold their big cat and now have a Cape Dory 30 motorsailorwhich suits them better.
Jane asked her mom to wear this apron. Although she is what you could call "proper British", she was a sport and wore it all afternoon

Back to a mooring in Black Sound as high winds are forecast for Tuesday on next week and the moorings get taken quickly.
An extremely salty looking boat grabbed one behind me. It looked like a Pacific Seacraft but I wasn't sure. Went over to chat and sure enough, it's a 27ft Oreon. Beautiful, solid boat! Hefty at 10,000lbs for a 27. Only 4ft draft, nice bulwarks and a beautiful wine glass stern too. The chalk is green is calling out for a 1500 grit wet sand and an aggressive rubbing compound after....
I really like the boat!

Geepers....
Nobody's posting so here goes...

Junkanoo was New Years on Green Turtle
Awesome costumes and a great time! The sleepy little island comes alive for this one day per year.
After the parade they had incredible fireworks!
I was totally impressed by both the quality of the fireworks and the amount of them for such a small community.
They truly get into Junkanoo

After awesome weather which thankfully lasted through Junkanoo....Jan. 2nd high wind, rain and cold set in! They were blessed it was after with all the prep that went into that one day.
Too wet and windy to get off the boat yesterday, it died down enough to venture out today.
Sunsets never get old to me...

Yea, that 27 Oreon is a nice looking boat.

Yep....been brutal up home too. Warmer today but with that comes snow.

Nice easy sail to Manjack to visit. Winds were light and just 2.5 to 3.5 knots boat speed but I was in no hurry.
Annie and Neville are back after a few years absence. Nev just turned 81. They sold the Warrem 46 cat they built and put 70,000 miles on. Their retirement boat is a Cape Dory 30 motorsailor.  Hard to fall off or out of it they say.
Jerome on "Jazz" sailed in again from France on his 31.
Nice to see some regulars return
PS...the sail back after 2 nights there was reefed down in 20-25+ and 5.5-6.5 knot boat speeds.

Thx lads
I worry I post too much as it has been the same area for so many years now.
Just had 3 awesome days sailing!
Close to broad reaching every day!
Today was gusting 25.... I left Spanish Cay with about 80% foresail unfurled and had a great, under control sleigh ride for 16 miles! Getting old.... Was happy not pushing too hard. Years back Reefed main would be up too but I was content not being stressed .

I took better panel mount pictures today.
I think you'll figure these out.
System has worked great...easy to tilt and secure with that big panel.

Tried 5 times....windy out...

Thanks again Frank!
Had time to kill before a meeting yesterday so stopped in at AltE in Boxborough MA looking at panels. I think I'm going to go with 2-24 volt 100 watt panels. I need something that will charge my 48 volt propulsion bank. Kicking around how to mount them but the boats covered so looking like a springtime project.

Just don't have the room for anything bigger & a single 32 volt panel  besides being huge would require a boost controller, thus reducing the amp output. I apologize for hi jacking the thread.

An observation...

Not saying they are good or bad boats, sail well or not...

But

Seems the folks that own island packets actually get out and use their boats!
There is a truly disproportionate amount of them "out here" compared to other builds.

Update
Winds prevented heading to S Abacos until last Saturday.
There is an invisible dividing line.....a shallow bank between Whale Cay and the mainland (Abaco island)  With strong N to E winds the swells pile up and break over the shallow inside pass "don't rock pass" as well as the outside as the ocean swells pile up coming into shalowwr water. At times it takes weeks to cross... When it's blowing, as it has been for weeks, it's call a rage sea. Locals will say "whales in a rage mun"
Anyhoot.....a bunch of us headed S last Saturday. Being the only shallow draft boat I took "don't rock pass" while the others all went around the Whale. We all got a bit beat up but made it to Guana on the S end.
I had to time breakers on the shallow bank just befor the pass. They had a few big ocean swells, the odd one breaking, to empty shelves.
It was worth it as Saturday is $10 rib night at Orchid Bay Marina at Guana
They tasted all the better after the day we had getting there.

The crew....
Average age around 65+
Still adventurous!

It was a slow, slightly hung over passage to Marsh Harbour to detox, provision and clean up the boat for company landing Saturday.
Provisioned yesterday from Anchor, took a slip at the Jib Room today to make laundry, water filling and boat cleaning simple. The fact it was rib night tonight had NOTHING to do with the plan.
I chuckled as this is the first day in a marina since launching back in mid November .

Last night from anchor
Ribs tonight

PS...the gang has scattered.
Some to Hopetown
Others N to Green Turtle
Some to Man of War
That's how cruising goes.....
You get to know people over the years and enjoy the company when courses cross. I'm sure we will all meet up several times again this year.

Funny about the Island Packets..
Seems the boats attract folks that will actually get out and use them!
Most seem like experienced cruisers that knew what they wanted.

Just in from a marina shower. What an absolute luxury to not heat water on the stove and then be SO stingy with it. Funny what puts a grin on your face when you're cruising.

But i concur. See lots of them when the transients are migrating. Maybe even more than any one other particular brand.

Frank - a Q for Budget Research: so say you a sailor spends the day with their 'Gang' partying ashore - how much does that set a person back, down there? Are they drinking like CJ, Faith, and You do, a dozen or so drinks an hour, or is it a much slower, sipping kind of thing? Been thinking/reading about 'budgeting' lately. How much are you getting by on down there, on a monthly basis or so?

Kurt...budjet is a tuff question.
You get to know where to go and when for cheap nights out EI: rib night $10 at Guana and what places to buy certain items.
Then...you are responcible for your own wallet drain.
On Green Turtle I go for breakfast with the boys, $9 tip in, lunch onboard, 2 happy hour drinks socializing at Sundowners, maybe a $5:50 hamburger, then back to the boat. Some nights I missbehave and drink more if the company is good. Other nights I don't go out. Add BYOB boat party's and events... Lots of choices on how much OR how little to spend. I know one couple on a $20 day budjet and they have fun.
I use credit card for almost everything as cash is difficult to get here and last month was $1080. A bad month is $1500+
I think I'm about average here. Some spend a lot more...Others a lot less.
Drink both less and on your boat (or other boats) (rum is cheap here) cook on the boat, fish a bit and dive lobsters a bit....heck....probably $400 month could cut it. Data has come way down now there is competition. 6 gigs was $25. That's what 2 gigs cost just a couple of years back.
Life is full of choices.
Help?

Left Marsh Harbour Tuesday for a very enjoyable reefed down sail to Hopetown. It was blowing 20-25 on the beam so ran on about a 90% Jib unfurled only. Full control in a close reach to the turn then a broad reach the remainder. Unfurled more for the broad reach. Chuckled at how satisfied I was not pushing the boat to the max and enjoying the nice ride. Years ago much more sail would have been up.

So, quite possibly Jim Browns!

Rented bikes today and rode from one end of Elbow Cay to the other.
The bicycles were actually nice riding and smooth for older style single speed-coaster brake bikes.
3 things stuck out...
How many hills there are that I never noticed before
How many bars there were along the way 😄
How sore I was upon return.
Figure I'll need a block n tackle to get lowered into the dingy tomorrow.
Really enjoyed the ride tho and want to do way more

Saving our mooring in Hopetown as the song writers festival is coming up next week and some musician cruisers and local talent are having a fundraiser on Thirsday for the "WILLIAM H ALBURY" restoration..... a beautiful old schooner built here in Man Of War Cay years ago....but...just had to get out of the harbour! Too nice a day so we dropped the mooring (with a reserved ball attached) and had an awesome beam reach up to Man Of War. It proved a much needed break and felt SOooooo nice to be drawing nicely on the blue-green water. Just finished a walk about town and back aboard for a sundowner before putting spegetti on. Life's good.

No one...
I mean NO ONE has more fun sailing than this guy!
Based out of Man Of War, I've seen him all over during the years.
This year he sailed over to Marsh Harbour for rib night (note no engine)
A few nights ago he left Hope Town at sunset for a night sail home.
Just now, as we sit having a sundowner...in he sails.
I can't help but grin every time I see him.
Great little boat. Super simple rig. Faster than you'd think and fun.
Yep...no one has more fun and less stress....

Was one of those "I trust my anchor" nights as unforecast winds came up and gusted over 30.  I'm anchored in the middle of a mooring field and the thought of catching a mooring line in the prop was on my mind laying there but thankfully after several checks we didn't budge!

Awoke to a wind shift and great view aft of a Westsail

Just a magical day so far!!
Up early and sailed back to Hopetown for a musical fundraiser. Cruisers that play and sing were doing an afternoon event to raise money for the WILLIAM H ALBURY and I wanted to enjoy it.
Once inside the harbour and back on our mooring, I saw that pretty little sailboat slide in as well.
At the event, I finally met it's owner "David Wright". Turns out he is an extremely interesting man and the person responsible for rescuing the WILLIAM H from ruin in Montego Bay and bringing her (towing her) home here. Very very long and fascinating story!
In short, the boat is back at Man Of War where it was built and he has taken it upon himself to restore her.
He is also an extremely talented musician, plays varied music but loves bluegrass...picking away on his 1921 Gibson mandolin (previously owned by a famous blue grass player in the 30s and 40s)
Wonderfully eccentric....he wouldn't allow a TV in his home and says it worked cuz now his kids take care of him 😄
As well...when a Canuck from Kingston Ontario Canada donated a mast, boom, rigging and sails....he drove up to pack everything to ship down to see it all in his Model T.....with 481,000 miles on it!
Gotta love characters!

Winds are good so a group of us did a break away and sailed a bit S and anchored off Tilloo by the pond. Were headed to little harbour but the the E wind has an uncomfortable swell coming in for anchoring so we're staying here a bit.
Felt like kids as we dingy'd into and around the pond before going junk collecting (lots os sea glass and other treasures around here)
I think the best part of cruising is turning 60 some year olds into 16 yr olds

Last nights sunset
Headed into the pond

A few years ago this off shore racer hit a container...
A month or so later it washed up here and has been rapidly deteriorating since.

The fleet....Allure is 2nd from end on right side

Heading out to pick sea glass before sailing back to Hopetown later.
I've never seen as much sea glass so easily found as this spot.

Pics are from the sail down here a few days back.
Gotta love the water colour!
These boards fly!

Back on a mooring in Hopetown for the song writers festival this week. Incredible talent!!
Had an awesome broad reach back today!
Started the Yanmar to enter the harbour and noticed the hours....
I've tried to make a point of wo4king with the wind this year and it's been great!
Launched end of November
Engine hours to date, Feb. 11th are 19
Nights at a dock...2... boat clean up and major laundry.
Times engine run when panels weren't  enough...twice for about 20minutes

Couple of pics from yesterday...
Hopefully entice a few of you into crossing over here.
Big boats are not needed!
I've done it in 20, 22, 23, 25, 26, 27ft and up.
Just gotta leave the dock!

Took a supply run to Marsh Harbour yesterday.
Had to motor the entire way....seemed boring after sailing so much this year.

Ran into this lil guy at the festival.
I'll bet he DOES run their ship!

Allure anchored at MH

that was his youngest son. I was building my trimaran, and he was visiting the place, anchored out. He kept showing me things and saying- "my dad does thus and so"

I finally asked "who is your dad?"

he responded "Jim Brown"

I began paying attention :) and learned a couple of things

Jim Browns youngest?   Would it have been Russell?  The Pacific proa whiz?!

Been pretty quiet....
Big entertainment has been watching the rental boat antics

These are 2 resent shots

Could be titled:

It gets harder and harder to resist every year. Especially after this winter in Boston, somewhere down south sounds pretty darn nice.

The Abaco's are SO easy to get to...
Once here, they are safe, next to no theft, no begging, great remote Beachs and enough little places to visit to make it interesting.
Downside is everything but rum is expensive.
Stock up before coming over...Mona holds lots!
Fishing is decent...as are lobster
Spend as much...or as little as you desire
But DO come over!
You'll wonder why you didn't sooner..

For a little island, they sure get into St Patty's day here at Green Turtle Cay.
It's my birthday as well and I joke they started the golf cart parade a few years ago just for me 😄
It begins at the liquor store where DAVID gives out free Guiness shots.
I title the first picture from there "what could go wrong?" 😄😄

Thank you, Frank, for more photos and tales.

Happy birthday, Grog to you! ...and an old Irish proverb...  ;)

May the sun always shine on your photo-voltaic panel
May your anchor never let you drag into the channel
May your composting head keep you free from marina
May you remain clear of the likes of Irma, Maria, Harvey, Katrina
May your dodger protect you from salt spray and foam
May the price of rum stay pretty darn reasonable
And if the weather up North ever gets more seasonable
May you grudgingly regretfully but safely return home

That's quite the prose 😄
Grog to ya

FWIW
The dodger DOES a great job and thankfully....the rum IS cheap!

Not much activity lately so figure I'd post a few recent pics.
Was up to Manjack last week to walk the beach's and feed the sea turtles and stingrays. They love squid!
Headed back up later this morning after getting a few provisions.

Last week afloat here....hauling out next Wednesday, then several days of prep to store before heading out.
Other than a couple of weeks at home twice, I've been afloat since last July and ready for a bit of land time back at the cabin....

Thanks for the pics.
Helps to take the chill out of the air up this way.
Personally I'd stay another month till it warms up a bit up here.
poop I'm still using the wood stove. Carolina's starting to look pretty attractive....

A true "SailFar" moment!!

Nice trio of 27s anchored together.

Left, a green Pacific Seacraft 27, forefront a North Sea 27, to right my ComPac 27

Proving...Ya don't need big to cruise!

Ain't that the truth about boats some people look upon as being too small for cruising.

By the way, I do understand about wanting to get back home for a while.
Have a safe trip home Frank.

Bob

I've cruised here on a 20, 22, 23, 25, 26 27 and up.
The saying "sail what Ya got" is so true....
Yep...home....starting to miss my cabin, the stove and feeding the deer...
Kinda funny as I won't be home long and missing floating.
Gotta love the contrasts. Makes life interesting.

I've told this before, but it bears repeating

Once tied to a dock over on the Florida east coast aboard Tehani. Conversation down the dock, as I hear a ladies voice say-

"oh look at the pretty little daysailor"

Without going up on deck i said-

" yep and she's daysailed to here from Texas"

Silence

Went up on deck to find a very nice young couple walking the docks admiring boats. Turns out they were looking for a boat to do some cruising in, but had absolutely NO idea it could be done in under 40 feet or so-

Thanks to the cruising mags-

GOTTA have gotta have-etc. When they found out how many miles I had cruised, including the Bahamas, they were shocked.

Just MAYBE I got a couple looking realistically at boat sizes. Hope so anyway :)

Tehani anchored, Pipe Creek, Exumas, Bahamas

Allure is hauled, cleaned, oil change, stripped and set for storage.
I fly out tomorrow morning.....
Took this pic with just the dodger still on. I'd never seen it that way as I always have the bimini up too.
Kinda sad but looking forward to "home" for a while.
