I have been listening to an interview with a real SailFarer Magnus Reslow, mostly unknown as he keeps a low profile, but he has lived most of his life on small boats, none bigger than 20'. He has sailed delivery of larger boats so he is not unfamiliar with what is out there, he just prefers to live on a minimal budget.
Anyway, his latest sail was from Sweden to the Canary islands during last winter when he was stopped by the Irish coastguard off the Irish coast and they inquired about the state of his small boats equipment.
"What bilge pump do you have?"
Magnus shows his bucket - water from inside to out!
"What about fire extinguishers?"
Magnus shows same bucket - water from outside to in!
How is your plumbing, do you have a pump out head or septic tank?
Magnus shows his bucket with a lid.
When he says he also uses it for tossing and mixing salad the stop asking.

"We hailed you on the radio but you did not respond. Do you have a VHF?"
No.
"What are your means of communication?"
Magnus proudly shows his prepared plastic bottles with messages ready to be passed to another ship.
They ask if he is heading for Ireland?
No, he is just passing on his way south.
They agree that then he is not their problem and wish him good luck.

No replies so maybe not amusing after all?
Well, this year is the year of solo circumnavigations. We have the Golden globe anniversary as well as a number of "firsts". I think three Swedes are attempting to go around solo, non stop. One is the above mentioned Magnus Reslow. He leaves in ten days, in a Vega...!

This is a blogg but scroll down a bit and you find pictures of Magnus working on his boat.

Ha! I missed this when first posted - this is great stuff! :) I am listening to the interview right now, even tho I do not understand Swedish :) I may pick something up, right?

Good to hear, these old guys like me heading out, as a counterbalance to all the super cute young couples with only a nod at actual experience at sailing and boats clogging up YouTube in search of Patreon dollar$. :)

Update: Magnus is leaving this afternoon on a shake down, heading up the west coast, across the north sea, north of Scotland and will be making final adjustments in some convenient British port.

The link to follow Magnus Reslow in the previous post does not work. Here is the correct one:

On another note, Sven Yrvind, the small craft inventor, sailor, philosopher is on his way to the antipode of his workshop which is somewhere off the coast of New zealand. He has planned for a 300 day non stop journey.
You can follow his progress here: http://www.yrvind.com/tracker/

Sven Yrvind (Lundin) has reached Porto Santo on the island of Madeira. He has decided to pause his planned trip to New Zeeland and go home to build another boat. The current boat, which is largely experimental, has some issues with the steering and is also to heavy and slow for the planned trip.

Interesting, will have to go read about that and his decision. He's getting up there in age, makes me wonder how many more boat builds does he have left, but I sure hope it is a bunch. :)

The thing about Sven is that he is not primarily a sailor/voyager or a boat builder but a philosopher.
He is searching for "the primary fundamentals of existence" and says that when he finds that he will be able to solve any problem! He just uses small boats to test his theories. He doesn't care if he only got a part of the way. It has answered some of his questions and given new questions to answer with the next boat. He will never be finished.
He has written a number of books which I hope will be translated to English. He has quite a life story.

I understand Sven stopping for steering problem, but Heavy?  Slow?  I did not know he was into SPEED!

Sven must be evolving in a different direction than he seemed to be a few years ago.  I know that only Sven has any idea what he has in mind, and that is changing as he goes forward in life.  Yes, he will keep building more, searching for the perfect compromise, but unfortunately, all his old ones are sailable, but unsellable in the EU.

I imagine he gives them away to local museums or something? Europe isn't as 'sue happy' as the US as far as I know, but if someone died in one of his boats that he'd given to them, it'd probably bring him a peck of trouble... Will be interested to see his design changes. Sounds like he found his lower limit of "how small" - must have enough room for provisions to stow out of the way of hatch access, lol.

I'm not sure what he does with the old boats. I think one is in a museum, the "aluminum Bris" mysteriously disappeared (interesting story) and the "aroundinten"- boat he cut up with a chain saw so he wouldn't be tempted to resume something so ridiculous. Ex lex was intended as a "low energy" boat which would have minimum resistance and maximum efficiency. It turns out that was not compatible with semi circumnavigation.
