Title: I'm outa here...
Post by: Toucantook on April 19, 2008, 11:08:29 PM
Tomorrow I haul off with Nano, my 8 footer, and go down to Flamingo, at the bottom of the 'Glades, and set off for No Name Key, east of Big Pine Key, where I have it that the finest pizza in all the keys, and maybe the universe (depending on who's review you read) is to be found at, where else, the No Name Bar.  We'll see.  After the pizza and several brewskis, I'll set sail back to Flamingo.  Should be fun.  I expect 7 days or so.  It will be nice to get out of the glare of the city lights for a spell....

Well, I'm back, and had a blast.  Never have I seen sooooo many water birds!

Yah Mon!!

If you recall, I'm the guy with the Liberty 28 in Wisconsin  ;)! I miss the Keys and can't wait to get down there and see all of my animal friends. The Osprey hatchlings ought to be flying by now!

I never made it to the pizza, by the way.  It was a matter of wind and timing.  I ended up doing a circumnavigation of the upper Florida Bay, from Flamingo to Long Key, up to Buttonwood Sound and back across to Flamingo.  The whole trip was done with the wind abaft the beam or on a dead run.  I checked out a whole bunch of the Bay's islands and the birds on each one.

The only problem during the five days was when I was pulling out of a leeward anchorage and both oarlocks came adrift.  Old wood.  I got out anyway, and didn't need them for the rest of the trip.  I need to get them fixed for the upcoming BEER, though.

And a PS, Stuart, since you like birds. :)

You might want to check out the Georgia coastline - lots of "Nanoing" you could do there - very little in the way of humans down by the oceans edge, but *lots* of birds. The biggest Brown Pelican rookeries I have ever seen are just south of Tybee Island, which has great, easy water access.

I'll probably get around to it.  I'm going to Nano Florida to death first, then spread out.  I like to check out the local stuff thoroughly before branching out.  I did the same thing with the US before going abroad.  By the time I took Toucan down island, I'd seen 47 of the 48 contiguous states.  Wyoming is hard to beat.
