Getting boat from Gulf Coast to Michigan

Hi All,

I'm one of the fortunate folks that have money in hand to buy a boat.  (been savin' for a few years) Although I'm close to making an offer on a boat on the Northeast Coast, there are a lot of boats in the Gulf Coast region.  I live in Northern Michigan.  I've looked into taking a boat across the Erie Canal, but I know little about bringing a boat from the Gulf Coast.

Have any of you done this, and what advice would you give me?  I would probably be going in the beginning of June and would not have a time schedule.  There'll be at least two of us for the whole trip, myself and my 28 yr. old son.  Might include 25 year old son and visitor/friends at times along the way.
