Started a refit of my Alberg 30, progress has been slow but steady. My latest blog entry is about cutting and fitting new balsa core into lazarette area of deck.
Photos and write can be found on my blog

That is a big job! Hope you get the reward of a "new" boat at the end.
Perhaps you can find some inspiration here:

SeaHusky,
Those video are inspiring and definitely something to shoot for.
My Alberg was starting to show age in many areas. I figured if I spent 2-3years, $10k and lots of elbow grease I could potentially have a boat that is like new and in many ways better.
I will post progress as often as I make it. Right now I am gathering parts to refinish hatches and other parts inside for the winter.
Thanks,
Jason
I'll race you? ;)

Now THERE'S a blank slate!!! ;)
You ARE a brave man!!! Grog to ya
But doing it right!! :-)
Get creative with the interior.
I always found just sitting inside...contemplating...would get creative juises flowing.
As CJ stated....you truly do have a blank slate to start with
Think batteries, tankage, lounging and galley
HAVE FUN!!!!!
keep the pics coming as it progress's

That's the way to do it, have fun!
Thanks for the comments!
Yes, sitting in the empty hull does give bursts of clarity about things I have been pondering.
Bravery indicates that I knew what I was getting into. This is just hubris.
But let?s not clutter Cruiser2B's thread! This is about his Alberg.
I have my own thread for my refit and will post my progress there.
a bit more progress on recoring of lazarette of our Alberg 30

Happy Thanksgiving!!
Good Job SeaHusky, looking good
More rotten core and more surprises...but some progress
http://svsalacia.blogspot.com/2015/11/alberg-30-refit-lazarette-nearing.html
Anyone else ever find 1/4 core?
Moved onto recoring the port side deck. The weather has been great..not sure how much longer it will hold out for outdoor boat work

You certainly are "doing it right"! Cheaper in the end as it will be better than new!! "keep the faith" :)
Thank you for Frank,
I am learning as I go. Thankfully many people before me documented their repairs. I am sorta just following what others have done. I thought about adding the G10 into the decks after another blogger used layers upon layer of fiberglass to accomplish the same thing.
I chose West systems epoxy because it is pretty much idiot proof with the pumps, far I have not messed it up! :P.
I am trying to do these repair in such a manner that I will never have to worry about them again. So far the decks, other than the fairing process, have not been too bad of a job. I fear glassing the toe rail, that seems like it is going to be a PITA ;D
Thank you for comments
I well remember being about where you are on my Electra restoration....
At times I felt overwhelmed and questioned my sanity....but it turned out fine.
Keep the faith.....it is a great boat...awesome design!! It will take you anywhere when you're done!!
SEVERAL of us have been there ::) :P
Some us more than once!!
Regarding the West System Epoxy, I've used it, and it works great. It seems pretty expensive, though, compared to others.
I have also used a lot of the much cheaper RAKA epoxy (I'm a fan of the "no-blush" hardener). It also uses pumps (1:2 ratio), and seems quite forgiving. Only once did it not cure right, which I strongly suspect was do to my typically working on projects at three and four in the morning...I think I may have reversed the resin/hardener ratio. I haven't heard any complaints from System 3 or MAS epoxies either. I think you will find they will pretty much all do the job.
I've pretty much quit using WEST due to the costs. Last five or six boats I built, I used epoxy from B and B Yacht Design. I can get a gallon of resin and a half gallon of Hardener, delivered, for what a gallon of resin costs from West.
I will point out this-if you are working in cool weather, West will cure much quicker than any of the 2-1 mixes. Have had some of those take 2-3 days to reach a workable cure, in temps below 60.
I've used RAKA, MAS and SYS 3 in the past, with good success. Did have one bad experience with a particular batch of SYS 3,, but only the once.
Guys,
Thank you for recommendations on epoxy. Truth is I get a very good discount on West system, gallon of 105 and qt of 205/206 are slightly less than or right at $100. I can source it less than 2 blocks from my day job on my lunch break, very convenient.
I will consider the other brands should I find myself paying West Marine prices.
RAKA 3 gallon kit=$168. It looks like UPS ground shipping *may* be included (it estimated shipping cost to my zipcode as $0...I'm not sure if that is right, though, as I paid more for shipping...reasonably priced...the last time I ordered).
The fast hardener worked well for me in cool weather; but tended to go off too quick in warm weather. The slow hardener works well in the summer. I probably still have a couple gallons in my storage area.
Godot,
$168 for 3 gallons is intriguing, do you have a link?
Google is my friend! I found it..may consider it when I run out of the 6 gallons of West I have accumulated, seems it may be real nice to work with when summer hits
Hey- check prices with B and B. Call Carla at 252-745-4793, and tell her Charlie Jones sent you. See what she quotes you.

I will do that for sure. I currently have 3 gallons of West System to use up. The Raka looks like it will be nice to use in the summer to extend the working times.
Thanks all again for suggestions.
I have used over a hundred gallons of Raka with no issues, very little blush if any. I have not used West or any of the big names.
Work continued over Christmas holiday as warm temperatures are still making outside boat epoxy work possible
http://svsalacia.blogspot.com/2015/12/alberg-30-refit-re-coring-port-side.html
work continued on side decks, moving to interior now that cold weather has moved in. BTW a 'new" to me Beta 20 arrived this week! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
http://svsalacia.blogspot.com/2016/01/alberg-30-refit-start-of-mast-support.html
There may be higher quality epoxies out there, but I have been using the basic stuff from US Composites http://uscomposites.com/epoxy.html (http://uscomposites.com/epoxy.html) and when buying in bulk, it is the best deal I have come across.
Last 6-7 boats I've built have been using epoxy from B and B Yacht design. Fairly inexpensive, and I would not be surprised if they get it from US Composites- they have 55 gallon drums at the shop.
In spite of bad weather I've managed to make a bit of progress on the Alberg

Started digging into mast beam over last few days
http://svsalacia.blogspot.com/2016/01/alberg-30-refit-digging-into-mast.html
I'm sure all your work will be worth it in the end.
Also found your you tube channel!
Has the current beam showed any signs of flexing or coming detached or are you, like me, overdoing it a bit just because you can?
Keep "da faith"
ur doin er right :D

It's really great that you're documenting this project.
Your site will, if not already be a good resource for others.
I enjoy seeing the progress you're making.
Thanks!

It did show some signs of rotten core and deck compression

Im trying...I really think Im over building because I dont understand exactly how strong fiberglass is but thats ok with me. Just want to make sure what I do repair and reinforce is sufficent and never has to be done again!

No problem, and thank you for compliments. I wish I could spend more time making better videos but that will come with time, money and more time :o....still learning.
much overdue update

Got some good progress on mast beam reinforcement this past week.

Looks awesome
Very well done!
Frank,
Thank you for the kind words. I am flying by the seat of my pants and designing as I go. Although I had an idea of what I wanted before I started. Just hope it all works out in the end.
Once upper part of beam it complete I will reinforce the the lower bulkhead where it attach to the liner and hull tabbing
Thanks,
Jason
