Here's an interesting CD27 - for about 20 years she's cruised with her owners up and down the East Coast from Canada to Florida (and maybe the Bahamas). I'll get more details tomorrow, we just had a fairly brief conversation in the boatyard today. The dodger conversion was written up and published in "Good Old Boat" mag a few years ago. All of the dodger windows are removable, with the exception of the front, center window, which has a windshield wiper on it. :) I tried to get some good shots, but it was late in the day, and the sun was backlighting the scene pretty strongly.

I think cape dory's just went up a notch or two or my list. ;D It does look like a pilothouse, but from the pics you can't tell if its 60' or 20' (other than the gas cans).... just beautiful lines :)
I Hope you can get some info on their travels, everybody talks about CD's, but there are very few first hand accounts of their travels. Not that I doubt their capabilities... just wanna hear more :)

Someone needs a pilot house. While I understand the benifits of a full cockpit enclosure, as a fellow Cape Dory owner I really don't like what it has done to the look..
I want to hear more too. Can you find out if they have a web site?

Big surprise yesterday was when they told me a friend of theirs had just come into the anchorage, someone we all know: sailFar's Joe Pyrat (http://sailfar.net/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=87), on his Triton "Kaholee"! So last night we all got together on "Whippoorwill" for dinner, conversation, and of course a little Grog. :D Joe actually had some "Pyrat" rum, lol. Great time! I took some pictures that I'll post later on, tonight or tomorrow.
I did find out that the article on the hard dodger is in the May/June '06 Good Old Boat, for those of you with a library to look it up.

Ahhh aesthetics :) The problem with "classics" is that they're... well classic.
I know some perhaps do not like the dodger on my Ariel, but I would not give it up for anything ;)

And after seeing the pics of Whipporwill, I may try and make up a cockpit tent to match the lines of it.
There's a big thread on the Ariel owner site about dodgers and aesthetics. Getting things to 'look right' can be hard. I think that the dodger/pilothouse on "Whippoorwill" was done nicely; it integrates with the overall lines of the boat, and since "Whippoorwill" does most of their sailing/cruising up in Canada and the NE US, I'm sure that it comes in real handy to have a nice warm bubble of air around you while in the cockpit sailing or sitting... :)
Tim, I would love to see more and closer-up pics of your dodger. Initially when I saw it I didn't like it much because it is so different; but over time it has grown on me, and it seems to actually 'fit' with the 60's styling of our boats. Sort of retro-rockety. :)
:) It does have that early "spacey agey" look to it. ;) I am beginning to do the refinish on her, and as I do smooth out the edges I will post more pics. The bottom line for me is that it affords a great deal of protection from wind and rain, which both in SF Bay and the PNW is vital.

The squared profile of the coach on the CDs dose lend itself to a hard dodger rather well doesn't it? Sometimes the vivacious curves of the Ariel coach down right @!$$ me off!! Tim's dodger does fit the lines well and if I wasn't such a old fuddey duddey I'd just copy his. But then again look at Joe Pyrat's cockpit and that's what I can see myself loungin' round in. One thing I've learned is the sutble difference of a few inches in boat length and shape can result in a huge difference in the way something looks or flows. It's one thing to buy an eyesore it's another thing to make one.
