After bringing her home in november 05...I'm finally getting at this job. A hole in the keel complete with terrible attempt at repair by PO and needing a deck re-core in 4 ereas...guess that's why I've been putting her off. Once she was stripped and a good cleaning...it sure is a lot nicer to work on. In the end she'll have: new sails, new standing and running rigging, new dodger and covers, new water tank, new home made cushions, galley mods etc etc. Pretty lil boat.Alberg knew his stuff ;D http://sailfar.net/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=123
OK Frank she does look a little worse for the wear than my Ariel, but she is a cutie and I know you will have fun.
Did you know that there is an Electra currently keeping right up with the bigger boys in the SSS TransPac ;D
Here is the link;
http://www.sfbaysss.org/TransPac/transpac2008/race_tracker/position.html
Thanks for the link.Good to see someone else out there thinks 22ft is enough ;)
Thinking of looking for a book... "deck re-core for dummies" :o The more I tap...the more deck gets removed.Glad it's a small boat ;D http://sailfar.net/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=123&page=2
Not sure if there is interest..this isn't a restoration site ??? but I posted a few new pics http://sailfar.net/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=123&page=1 Had to remove a terrible keel repair with bondo included before starting glass work.Hard to get the 1st layer on so out came the tape...it worked. The deck was worst than thought. All the new coring is cut and will start glass work this afternoon on it.Had to reduce the opening size of side ports to install new Beckson openers...worth the trouble for ventilation.Had to cut up the floor to remove the old galv.water tank to replace with a plastic one.Fun stuff really. :)
If no one else, I'm interested in your restoration process.
I am definitely interested Frank, can't view the photos easily at the moment because I'm on dial-up but will be home in another week and looking forward to it.
Hi Frank,
Wish I were there to help...and to learn ;). It seams that every time I try to do a little glass work I make a muck of it ::). Please keep us(me) informed.
Fair winds,
Pappy Jack
Just a note...I now have HUGE respect for all that have re-cored a deck before me! Fixing holes in keels is easy....getting new coring to fit and the ole deck skins back on isn't near as much fun.Still beats 'normal' work tho ;D Took a few minutes to 'sit and daydream' today after getting 2 cabin top pieces back on. A fella needs that 'dream time' to come up with ideas and bond with the boat.
Really looking forward to seeing the rest of the photo shoot!
The only thing worse then replacing coring (IMHO) is re-replacing coring when the job was not done right the first time... :P
What a great little boat! I have always liked the Electra, but did a bit more surfing looking at pictures and like them even more. Knowing your history, I am sure you will have it very nicely set up and ready to go in no time.
Lucky is the boat that attracts your attention Frank..... you know, with dogs there are 'breed specific rescue groups'... maybe you can host one for little lost Alberg designs that need some love? ;D
Frank - You are the man.
What a project! Great Pic's!
Are those rather large repair sections, holes in the hull?
You are a worker! Was this perchance - a free boat? ::)
Shipscarver...yep..the boat was going to be crushed...just the cost of loading it on the trailer (he did gouge me)...and yep...that was a BIG hole in the keel.A previous attempt at repair had it with a huge bulge full of bondo...it was a mess. Honestly, the keel repair is easy compared to the decking. Craig...yep, a sucker for ole Albergs. These are very pretty lil boats and should sail real well.As to a 'breed specific group'.......I know of an Ariel about 90 miles away that is gutted and has a frustrated owner. I send an e-mail now-then to keep contact. ::)
Some progress this week....another few layers on the keel, new chainplates cut/drilled for ext. mount, new water tank fitted and deck cutouts epoxied on. Now the real grinding starts :o in prep for taping the seams and fairing after. Posted a few more pics.(can't seem to get them in the right order?) One shows the life ring from the prev. owner. Any idea where this boat came from? http://sailfar.net/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=123&page=2
Got the 'grinding' part done to tape the seems where the deck was cut out.Moved it outside to work on for less dust in the shop.
Start taping tomorrow
Started basic hull sanding too after de-waxing
Getting set for a new dodger
Looking Good... :)
Very Nice Frank, you are so dang.....productive :)
1st tape on seems PS-thanks .. I am no 'boat restorer' but I do love working on them. I'm in that same zone I'm sure others get into about 1/2 way thru.....where ya question your sanity for starting ;D
Figured offshore 'skooting' that the ole hatch would leak...will have to build up to fit the new one (bomar) but it should be a lot safer.
There was no access to the the large erea under the aftdeck. These open it up
Made up a large double with fillers in my ole Ariel....same will work here to create a nice size for a 22fter
Frank-
Beautiful work... keep us posted. :)
There is no table in an electra and really no easy way to do one. After sitting and daydreaming I came up with this.It simply clips onto the step and the leg folds out.easy on/off/stow.That is the fun part of this...getting ideas
Had to cut the old hatch off and enlarge the hole for the new one.The original was wider, so here's what I came up with.Scrap basement pressure treated ply. It will get glassed in top and bottom.Should work as a good base.
up-date ..Got the fore hatch plywood buildup glassed over and making storage inside with some compartments P/S. The holes are drilled for the new ext. mount chainplates. Mast is back with new rigging etc and new sails home now as well.
Very nice Frank,
What are you using for the external chainplates?
I got a 1,1/4 by 1/8th type 316 SS flat bar and cut/drilled. S L O W drill speed and use oil to cool ;)
Doing mods to the mini galley for more storage. This will be above in the corner and I cut out the counter to make a 'drop in' erea. Will be 'as good as it gets' on this boat. Disclaimer....not cabinet quality....but with filler and paint, it'll look OK :o
Not sure if this is the 'right way'...but I'm using epoxy and micro balloons as filler to fair the taping on the deck re-core. Ya gotta sand quick after ;D PS ..The hatch has one full layer of 9 oz cloth over all of it both in/out and then another layer of wide tape
One point Frank- Micro balloons are hollow,, so if you sand a filler of them, be sure to roll on a thin coat of epoxy after wards to seal the open balloons. Of course if you are glassing over them, that does the trick.
Thanks CJ...I will put a thin epoxy over to seal once sanded fine. The seams have 3 layers of FG tape on them already, so this was my idea of 'bondo'....again...not sure if right or normal...just seemed to make sence to me.
It'll be fine as long as it's sealed with something. It's only those micro balloons right on the surface that you open up sanding. So as long as those are sealed it'll be fine.
New combings are made and ready for finish.
I re-enforced under the deck while at it
Putting a bilge pump in the cockpit...these have pop up handles. One below too
With a narrow bilge, I found a small size gulf cart battery that fits in nice.Deep discharge and not too bad @ 31 amp/hrs
I like those Plastimo bilge pumps. I just ordered two of those to mount on the amas to pump out the amas as needed. :)
Here's how the new chain plates will look
keel is finally ready for paint as well.6 layers of stitchmat and 2 cloth
Looking great Frank. That is one salty lil Electra you are building there.
Nice work. ;D
Today is wiring.Got the VHF mounted, compass and depth in place, new LED lights etc.The canvass for the dodger showed.Have'nt tried it on yet...hope my pattern worked.Paint is next.....after I figure out that pizza oven ;D
This will mean nothing if you've never had a boat ripped apart...but to those who have...today was a biggy! I painted the bilge, inside the lockers, anchor well and around the head erea.More paint tomorrow. Now I know that is no big deal...but after seeing things ripped apart for a couple of months it feels SO good to see something take shape and look 'finished'.The project turns a huge corner when paint starts going on.
I know that feeling well, Frank. It IS a big turning point. It is the moment that she begins to become a boat again instead of a bunch of miscellaneous parts stuck together. She becomes whole again and you can begin to dream about sailing her again. The light at the end of the tunnel isn't a freight train. It's the sunrise shining on a sailboat in a peaceful anchorage.
Congratulations.
Sure cleans thing up
Frank, She's looking incredible you have given me a real goal and great inspiration for the Ariel......Now if I could just clear my calendar and get to work full time on it!
Frank, looking good 8)
What you doing after Xmas? LOL ;D
Thanks...With luck...on this boat in the Bahamas ;) Been thinking about a name.I was going to call her Jubilee as many people know me by that boat name there....but my ole Ariel was named 'Revival' and that seems more fitting for a boat saved from a dumpster.
http://sailfar.net/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=1812.0;attach=1000;image
I like what you did with the forehatch. I have a similar situation, the forehatch is big and not watertight. That looks like a good solution.
Skylark..the original was wood framed holding plexiglass. The new one was a 'discontinued sale' at defender for $150. Didn't seem worth the time/$$ to make a new old one that would be more likely to leak.
Hey Frank, Nice article in the latest SCA! Congrats!
Thanks Tim .. Josh @ SCA did a great job...I sent it to him printed with finger spaces ;D
Set the galley back in after a few mods for more storage.Removed the port side of counter and built a lower shelf to add storage, cut a 8inch hole to access below..will have a deck plate, and put a fiddle to use space below drawer.Plus the lil storage bin above.
We will not be using the Vberth other than as a head and for storage.Made these simple angled shelves pt/stbd for bedding and other light stuff.Put the 1st coats of cetol on the new mahagany....WOW .Tried the new cetol clear...I'm very impressed at the look.Always liked the durability but the orange thing was kinda gross. The clear is impressive. Will post pics after final coat..
Got the bilge pumps installed. One out/one in
little more progress.beskson opening ports installed, compass and bidata in, forwood hatch installed, aft access hatchs installed.
Another galley pic...before/after
More done.....Cetol light doesn't look too bad
Stained the table to match the old interior wood trim. Fore hatch turned out good.
Mounted the VHF close to the companionway for ease of use, but tucked in out of the weather. Can see the beckson openers in the pic as well. Glassed over old holes from dble mainsheet system and installed a new traveller. Not bolted in yet...but ya get the idea. Aft hatchs installed now too. Getting there...slow but getting there
Slow but getting there?!? Are you kidding me, Frank. You seem to pump out a boat in record time. And well planned out lookers to boot. Maybe you'd like to vacation in balmy Minnesota next time around and give Dream Weaver a good goin over. At the rate I'm progressing(?) we'll never make the 2010 Scoot!
She looks great, Frank. Keep the inspirational photos coming.
Thanks Tony. If this is "Tony G" from the ariel site....what I'm doing is a industrial grade...what you're doing is craftsmanship ;D.
added a few items for a bit of character below
Got the water tank in and secured..battery in .Both have plywood for/aft glassed in for security
Combings on..winchs re-installed etc...
Frank-
You need a battery restraining bar or strap on that battery as well as some terminal covers.
Getting there.Deck painted,hull primed
cockpit looks better than the before pic
Primer on...still tacky...sanding later
inside fully painted.Home made cushions soon
Man that is one sweet Electra.....
I said it before, I will repeat. Lucky is the day in a boats life that she would catch your eye Frank.
Great work as always. ;D
Thanks for taking the time to take and post the pictures.
Absolutely Gorgeous!!
Is the head plumbed to a holding tank?
Purely out of couriosity, Frank, just how many sailboats have you owned? You should post a gallery of your stable. seriously!
Thanks. ..the head will go to a Y and over or a 'bag type' flex tank that will go under the Vberth. It's on the bench...not in yet.
Peeled the tape ;D new chainplates on, rubrail on.
Beauty!
darn nice work... :)
Incredible work Frank. You've turned that boat out in a hurry! Nice job!
Thanks. But it is truly 'industrial grade' work....nothing fancy. CJ and Laura or Capt. Tony are the craftsmen. It was a bigger job than I thought...as they always are.About 1/2 way through I questioned my sanity as the hours and bills piled up.If you're ever guessing...double the time and cost and you'll be fairly close ;D The saving grace is it truly is a pretty boat..at least to my eyes, should sail really well and be as seaworthy as a mass production 22fter can be.That can't be had too often anymore at any price.
Dodger fits !! :o Always a lil worried ya got the pattern right
Dodger front
Nice to see the "Electra" plate back on
Beautiful! I really like those nice old bronze winches
BTW - the dodger looks great too. Did you make it yourself?
If so, would you mind giving me a couple of hints 'how to..' :D
Modified the ladder to get it near to vertical
Glassed in a wedge to get the OB bracket closer to vertical. The 2 thru-hulls are for the 2 bilge pumps.
Frank,
I gotta say it...you do mighty fine work 8).
Fair winds,
Pappy Jack
Home made cushions.Back rests become fillers for large dble
New drop boards (before/after)
Frank, in the parlance of our times, you rock.
These updates keep the fires burning 'round here during these long, cold winter months. Man oh man I wish I had a heated shop.
We'll live vicariously through you...again!
Thanks Tony...but "parlance"? Remember...I've got grade 10. Out comes Webster's "parlance -speak,language or idiom" OK, what's idiom? Again webster's "idiom- the language or dialect of a people, region class etc (like us small boat guys ;D) OK ... now I get it :o
I hope you mean after/before... :) Otherwise, your work has really slid downhill... :)

Parlance is from the old French. Another word that all pirates knew is ''parley'' which is borrowed from the old French : ''pourparler''. Well all that is just talk.... :)

After a few rums...it all looks the same....right Kurt? Kurt..Kurt...wake up ;D
We demand updates, Frank!!! Dream Weaver is covered with snow inside a building. We're starting to Jones here! Can you help a brother out, buddy?
Not much to update.Pretty much done other than putting the mast up,rigging it,provisioning, putting the OB on and go.I had thought I could modify a new/old tiller I had kicking around but nope...so a new on is on order.New sails were delivered a while back, sunshade is made, new standing and running rigging etc made in late summer. Not much to report other than trying to get through Christmas and new years ;D.
How is Dream Weaver covered with snow inside a building??? Can't be much of a building... :) Or your idea of a roof is a bit different from mine. :)

It aint much of a building. Well, I shouldn't say that, it really has served me well for way too many years. There is a 12" gap that runs along the ridge of the roof that has a translucent fiberglass ridgecap to let light in. Over the years the adhesive backed foam that sealed the gap between the roof panels(metal)the 'skylight' has weathered away. Up here the wind blows the snow left to right and vice versa instead of just letting it fall heavenly from the up. Little gaps result in fairly substantial snow accumulations in a day or two. Yes, I have replaced the foam, but it doesn't stay put well once the wind pipes up.
So I just keep dreamin all winter long...nibblin' on sponge cake, watching the sun bake...
Frank is a "Git 'er done" kind of guy
Not like most of us

"sit below and dream" ;D
Umm...Frank, you're making us look like slackers and tired too boot by publishing that list. :)
Welll....it's finally out of the shop.I think the 2 biggest days are when you're peeling back the tape after painting and then the 'out of the shop' or moving it the yard day. Both signify major changes in the boats condition.
Nice Job Frank! Looks like a champ!
Thought I would ad the link to "sell far" and the note on this boat for sale.
Still "under roof....never launched"
