Title: First Step!!!
Post by: Bubba the Pirate on March 10, 2007, 05:19:12 PM
Wow!

I've started the steps!   I've got an deposit and an offer pending on a Cape Dory 28!  I'm giving my notice at work on Monday!   If offer is accepted I'll be headed from South Bend to Bay City, Mi to start cleaning/fixing her up!   I'll need to find some work when I get there.   Hope to head south by end of summer; Erie Canal, Hudson River and points south.

I am really excited!  She needs some work but what used boat doesn't.   She is real solid; just needs some love and a little paint.  :o)    The list begins.

Woo Hoo!!!!

Congratulations! The work of upgrading a boat to meet your standards for cruising is never really done.  The CD28 is a great boat, best of luck to you in your refitting and travels.

Add my congrats (and grog) to the list.  CD's are great boats, Rose and I looked at one a while back.  One thing about the 28 I liked was the elimination of the lazy-rat, which moved the cockpit aft, and freed up lots of room for the cabin.  I think this is a really good idea for a boat with an inboard.

I think you will be very happy with the boat, and the nice thing is that even though there may be a long projects list, she will be worth the effort.

When I was a kid, I used to dump all kinds of time and money into fixing up cars and motorcycles.  Many many waited dollars and time.  A fixed up crappy car, is just that.. same is true of a fixed up crappy boat.   A boat like yours will be worth the effort, if not in $$ terms, certainly satisfaction.

Thanks one and all!   That's lots of Grog! :o)

I will definitely keep you posted.  I've been working on a site and will chronicle my work.   I lurk on several forums, but feel most comfortable here.   Friendly plain talking people with like minds.

I can't wait to install the 'Sailfar Sticker!'

The guy took my offer.   I close April 15.   I'll have to find a job to pay for my truck until I sell it.   I turned in my notice today at my job of 9 years.   March 30 is my last day.

I'll keep you posted!   The boat is named "In the Mist."  That didn't really grab me until I googled it.   In The Mist is a piano composition by Bix Beiderbecke a cornet player in the transition between Dixieland and Modern Jazz.   I think I'll like explaining that.    Bad luck to change it anyway yadda yadda . . . . .

The gears are turning.   When I update my website, I'll let you know.

I posted two pictures in my gallery here from the boattrader.com listing.  The photo of her in a slip is a year or two old.   The photo of her on the hard is as she sits today.  There is also a sail/floor plan drawing I got from the Cape Dory Owners Assoc.

She needs some cleaning up.   I have a few more shots in my camera that I will put up.   I didn't take any pictures below there is stuff laying all over.   I will eventually have some before and after shots either here or on my site.

Thanks!

Looks good from outside.  What kind of bottom paint are you putting on her?

I haven't done bottom paint before actually.   I need to do some research.   I understand there are different compositions and potential chemical compatibility and adhesion issues.  I've started looking for a job up there, but haven't gotten to bottom paint yet.

Suggestions are welcome.   :) :)

There is a very interesting series of posts on the www.ssca.org dicussion website about the different bottom paints and why you would choose one over the other. A lot of the choice is based on where you will be sailing (part of the country) and how much time you will be at anchor or at a marina in choicing ablative paints of hard paint like Trindad. There is a Trindad that has 75% copper which seemed to be the favorite choice for Florida and the Caribbean by most saliors. It is a very interesting read . Dan

If you will be keeping her in the Great Lakes, VC17M is a good choice.  If you will be moving out to briny water, something else will be needed.  If it will be a number of years before you go, VC17M is probably not a bad choice for now because it wears away over time.

I am hoping to make it out the Erie/Hudon route to the Atlantic by late summer or fall.   It might, however, be spring.

How long between applications would you normally go?

I do one application per year of VC17M.  If you are going briny, you don't want to use VC17M.

Trinidad?  Ask someone who sails in salt water.

The first thing you have to decide is whether you want to go with an ablative or a hard epoxy finish.  The ablatives can go several years, if you apply enough to begin with, and have the advantage of not needing as much work to prep the surface or leaving a buildup of old paint.  However, the ablatives aren't very good if the boat is going to be a dock queen, as they require the boat to move to be really effective.   I would probably recommend you go with an ablative.

I'd have to check to see which ablative PS recommending in their last anti-fouling showdown issue.  Let me see if I can find it.
