Title: Macgregors; 26s, 26m, 26x... etc.

I was curious abut the specs for the Macgregor 26 and discovered that there is a Mac 26 and 26X . Their specs are very different with the 26X weighing almost @x as the 26. Which MacGregor do you have?

lol- and now you learn that the "X" is no longer in production ;D

The boat being produced now  is the "M" model, which is a better sailing boat than the X was, supposedly.

You can read the specs for that boat at our website-

Oded Kishony - The 26 is not planing. The X and M is. The X sold over 5000 and is no longer made. The X has a swing keel with the head next to the companonway. The M has a Dagger board and the head is midship and about 1 foot higher in the aft bunk. There is more stuff. Check out - http://macgregorsailors.com/phpBB/

It is not a Blue Water boat and I do check my weather windows carfully.  Gettin an SSB installed for the Bahamas. Not really needed for USA. Lots of MODS.

Please keep the advice comming. From all the cruisers that I talk to, Abacos is THE place for your first weason.

PM me if you want more data.

I split the first few post in this thread out of another and merged them together in this thread.

OBTW, CJ's site has all you ever wanted to know about  the difference between the 26X and the New 26M. (http://www.southtexassailboats.com/comparison.html)

QuoteComparison of the 26X and the New 26M

In March of 2003, MacGregor introduced the all new MacGregor 26M to replace the 26X that had been in production for 7 years. Approximately 5000 of the X had been produced before being replaced by the M. The new boat is substantially different from the old. The following is a summary of the changes.....

Hawkster - good choice you've made, to look around before buying that first boat. I usually tell 'first timers' to look for something 1) cheap, and 2) with good resale potential. ;D

I'll bet that you'll find that most folks have had at least *2* boats - we tend to get the first one, then with it learn a lot about what works for us (or doesn't), and later with that knowledge added to what we've learned about sailing in the meanwhile, get a second boat that 'mo bettah' works for our individual style/dreams/expectations/usage.

Good luck on your hunt! Let us know how it goes. :)
