Title: Passages

Thought I'd start a thread where we could post sailing-related quotes, spoken or written or whatever.

Feel free to drop off your own favorites... :)

We were crowded in the cabin, not a soul would dare to sleep---
It was midnight on the waters,And a storm was on the deep.

'Tis a fearful thing in winter,To be shattered by the blast,
And to hear the rattling trumpet thunder,
"CUT AWAY THE MAST"!!!

So we shuddered there in silence,
For the stoutest held his breath,
While the hungry sea was roaring
And the breakers talked of death.

As thus we sat in darkness,
Each one busy with his prayers,
"We are lost" the captain shouted
As he staggered down the stairs.

But his little daughter whispered,As she took his icy hand,
"Isn't the lord upon the ocean,
Just the same as on the land?"

Then we kissed the little maiden.
And we spoke in better cheer,
And we anchored safe in harbor
When the morn was shining clear

Only to find that,
The sea has mastered he!!!!!!!

''the act of dreaming is important in itself.
I wish you an endless flood of dreams and
the intense desire to make some of them come true.
I wish you love for what should be loved
and forgetting for what should be forgotten.
I wish you passions.
I wish you silences.
I wish you bird song on awakening
and the laughter of children.
I wish you resistance to being swallowed up,
to indifference,
to the negative virtues of our age.
Above all, I wish you to be yourself.''

"Voyaging belongs to seamen, and to the wanders of the world who can not, or will not, fit in. If you are contemplating a voyage and have the means, abandon the venture until your fortunes change. Only then will you know what the sea is all about."

you stole it from me Pappy Jack... What a great line and so true, that should be meditated on   :) . Sterling Hayden ''Voyage''  has been one of my favorite too.
Let me quote Bernard Moitessier here :
''I am a citizen of the most beautiful nation on earth. A nation whose laws are harsh yet simple, a nation that never cheats, which is immense and without borders, where life is lived in the present. In this limitless nation, this nation of wind, light, and peace, there is no other ruler besides the sea...''

Thanks Manannan,

The last part of it is also good... "The years thunder by. The dreams of youth grow dim where they lie caked in dust on the shelves of patience. Before you know it, the tomb is sealed. Where then, is the answer? In choise. Which shall it be: bankrupcy of pruse or bankrupcy of life?"

It is so great to start the day with a little poetry. This one is from the Sea Symphony by Walt Whitman :
To-day a rude brief recitative,
Of ships sailing the seas, each with its special flag or ship signal of unnamed heroes in the ships -
Of waves spreading and spreading far as the eye can reach.
Of dashing spray, and the winds piping and blowing,
And out of these a chant for the sailors of all nations, fitful like a surge.
Of sea-captains young and old, and the mates, and of all intrepid sailors.
Of the few, very choice, taciturn, whom fate can never surprise nor death dismay,
Picked sparingly, without noise by thee, old Ocean, chosen by thee
Thou sea that pickest and cullest the race in time and unitest nations,
Sucked by thee, old husky nurse, embodying thee
Indomitable, untamed as thee

My favorite stanza by, Whitman:
"Passage, immediate passage! the blood burns in my veins!
Away O soul! hoist instantly the anchor!
Cut the hawsers - haul out - shake out every sail!
Have we not stood here like trees in the ground not long enough?
Have we not grovel'd here long enough, eating and drinking like
    mere brutes?
Have we not darken'd and dazed ourselves with books long enough?"
.....Passage to India

Good Sunday  morning to the sailors of all latitudes. I hope some of you are planning a nice day sailing
In case some are still hesitating between a clear crisp day on the water or a lazy afternoon in front a TV or computer screen, here that is for you :  :)

''The sea is everything. It covers seven tenth of the terrestrial globe. Its breath is pure and healthy. It is an immense desert where man is never lonely, for he feels life stirring on all sides ''
Jules Verne (born in my hometown : Nantes)

Hi T-Jim

Wish you nice sailing in the Bay. I've been living there for 4 years, in Berkeley. End of March should be lovely there. I can almost smell all the flowers blooming and feel a nice warm breeze sweeping the water. If we just can get rid of all the traffic and at least 2 millions people, it would be paradise. Would be so nice to go back in time and sail in through the Gate into the Bay with only the green hills around and some tall ships anchored !!
I am in a dreaming mood again  ::)

Tim, my cell is 801 864 1416....hopefully I'll be aboard Saturday making some changes..That Tiger windless is too hard on feet, shins and I'm tired of having to wash the blood off the fore deck.....It's going to the dock locker until I get ready to get underway.....I needed to move it forward about 6 inches anyway... I got a brand new asymmetrical to play with and looking forward to it.  give me a call anytime you got time..TJim

That flea market was last weekend.  A friend (fellow Triton owner) picked up a gimbled one burner stove that will work in the limited galley area of a Triton.  I'd say that's pretty lucky at any price under $100...I'm talking about one that you can actually use in a bit of weather....So naturally the Emeryville flea market will be on Saturday and/or Sunday, probably the 29th and/or 30th during the Wheeler...
There is always something you can use at such events....Maybe I can sneak in early and get out & on the water early enough... TJim

let's celebrate the arrival of Spring, unless you live in those endless summer places and that does not make any difference, we desperately need it here.... :(

...You expected to be sad in the fall, part of you dies each year when the leaves fell from the trees and their branches were bare against the wind and the cold wintry light. But you knew there would always be the Spring, as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person had died for no reasons.... Ernest Hemingway

Happy Spring Equinox and fairwinds to enjoy it  :)

How is your spring ? In my corner, it is snowing where it should not and when it should not anymore. Mark Twain must have travelled up there when he said :
''In Spring, I have counted 136 different kinds of weather inside 24 hours ''....Of course, my mood follows trying to adjust.. it is exhausting !!

Ran across this one today and it was just too good not to share, and it relates well to this thread (http://sailfar.net/forum/index.php/topic,3020.msg32551.html#msg32551) also.

Houses are but badly built boats so firmly aground that you cannot think of
moving them.  They are definitely inferior things, belonging to the
vegetable not the animal world, rooted and stationary incapable of gay
transition... The desire to build a house is the tired wish of a man content
thenceforward with a single anchorage.  The desire to build a boat is the
desire of youth, unwilling yet to accept the idea of a final resting
place... When it comes, the desire to build a boat is one of those that
should not be resisted.  It begins as a little cloud on a serene horizon.
It ends by covering the whole sky, so that you can think of nothing else.
You must build a boat to regain your freedom.

--Arthur Ransome

A liveaboard friend of mine, Tim, is using this one as his email signature:

"It is not the direction in which the current flows
Nor is it the direction in which the wind blows
Rather, it is the setting of the sails
That enables a boat to reach its destination
Sail on strongly; be great of heart."
