Title: Reading Now?
Post by: Captain Smollett on October 10, 2011, 09:32:55 PM
Reading Melville's Moby Dick on my phone with the Aldiko app.

Just finished Starliner by David Drake.

Yes, I prefer hard copy for reading, but ...

What are you reading now?

I just listened to a wonderful book on tape titled "On Whale Island: Notes from a Place I Never Meant to Leave"

I very much enjoyed the book, and would recommend it. I am a Sailor, as is the author... but it is a great read.... you will know the author... Daniel Hayes.

I also have been re-reading "A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail" (http://www.amazon.com/Walk-Woods-Rediscovering-America-Appalachian/dp/0307279464/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1318092100&sr=1-1)

Really funny, well written book. I have been pondering doing some walking on the AT, so it has relevance... but would be a good read for anyone... just a good story well told.

A couple of books are ongoing...

Three Years in a Twelve Foot Boat (http://www.amazon.com/Three-Years-Twelve-Foot-Boat-Stephen/dp/0966933737/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1318361522&sr=1-1) by Stephen Ladd (http://www.amazon.com/Stephen-G.-Ladd/e/B000APK00A/ref=ntt_athr_dp_pel_pop_1).  Something I just pick up and read for a few minutes at a time.  I'll probably finish it around 2020.  Hardcopy.

And I'm halfway through The Riddle of the Sands (http://www.amazon.com/Riddle-Sands-Dover-Thrift-Editions/dp/0486408795/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1318361138&sr=8-2) by Erskine Childers (http://www.amazon.com/wiki/Robert_Erskine_Childers/ref=ntt_at_bio_wiki) on the Kindle.  Pretty engaging nautical spy fiction; but I haven't picked it up in a few weeks.  Been too busy.  The author's bio is quite interesting reading, as well.

Last finished book was AWOL on the Appalachian Trail (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003JMFKRE/ref=kinw_myk_ro_title) by David Miller (http://www.amazon.com/David-Miller/e/B001JP81DI/ref=ntt_athr_dp_pel_pop_1) [Kindle].

I've come to really enjoy reading on the Kindle.  I'm less enthused with other devices, although I've read a couple dozen books on the laptop (pre-kindle), and even a couple on the Android phone.

Picked up and read in bits and pieces from time to time Building Classic Small Craft by John Gardner (with the intention of producing a peapod at some time in the near future). The plates in this book could be converted via Illustrator to working station layouts for building any number of the boats included. At least I think it's doable... I've done similar line conversions with other materials.
Finished The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors by James D. Hornfischer. It's not really about "sailing", but recounts a segment of the Battle of Leyte Gulf WW2, in which my father was a participant aboard an escort carrier.
