Just wondering if things that are time and date sensative need to be deleted as the time passes - things like crew notices and even the tuesday nite chat calls. A new post could be put up for the next one and keep the space free on the site - Just a thought
I'd say that's fine if each member who posts such a thread deletes their own; I personally don't want to see a bunch of admin work for the moderators (and certainly not for Kurt).
I think SMF has a "Delete Old Posts" option in the config settings; threads that have had no activity after x amount of time get pruned. I'm not in favor of this, in general, though. Just becase a thread/post is old, does not mean it is not informative.
Well, I pretty much agree with John. I hate to delete anyones posts, since it messes with their post count, and also because the ebb and flow of posts and topics when viewed in the future might be interesting to look at. That said, teach has a good point about clutter... :)
Maybe a "Dust Bin / Archive" thread or something similar where we can put dupes/expired posts/etc? Posters could ask for their thread to be moved into there, or moderators could do so as they run across candidates... I'll wait and see if anyone else has a better idea or improvements on this...
Thx for the thoughts, teach! :D
I had merged the 'how about a chat' type posts this morning, so they would be in one thread.
Also,
It is a good practice to post to a thread that is already there, rather then starting new ones (the old 'use the search button' thing ;) )
This will help cut down on the 'strays'. ;D
My thoughts were more on non issue things Just to use the Chat room as an example, In a few years of people posting to an existing thread that they are available to chat - that thread will be 20 pages deep of 'Hey anyone wanna chat ?' or 'To the Chat ROOooooom!!' stuff
I dont think any thread of merit should be canned (esp my stuff ;) ) but the junk mail I dont see a problem removing that, to help keep the site from using up space. I also dont know how much space this site has available or how fast it is being used up
Again just my thoughts
Greetings:
I'm counting that the bulk of these discussions will remain archived .Do I need to print out those posts I want to save or is the archival fairly reliable?
Oded
Oded - The *only* things which *might* get put into some sort of archive would still be available to see. Moving any content would only be to organize it better, keep it ship-shape. :)
Teach - we are good to go as far as space for the site. Most of what gets posted is text anyway, which is small, file size-wise. No worries, mate! :D
