Title: New Sails
Post by: jotruk on May 31, 2011, 10:29:01 PM
Well I bit the big bullet and bought a new main and Gib. I think I got a good deal on both, only paid 650.00 on main and 500.00 on Gib. the Gib is a 180%  looking farward to seeing how well it works.

Congrats on the new "engine."   ;D  Let us know how they do.

From what sail maker did you purchase your sails?

I have a brand new main I've had for months that has only been bent on to test fit and take measurements for a new sail cover.  That's gonna change within a week or so...we'll probably be sailing the 40 miles or so to the boatyard for haul-out.

Congrats on the new sails. We just got a new sail also and the only problem is its hard to get the old sail cover around it ;D

I got the mail from The Sail Warehouse and it was a Rolly Tasker and the gib was from Masthead Sailing gear. the gib was new but has been stored for a while and has rust stains on it but in good shape will be putting the gib on this weekend and trying it out then. Had to get a gib we had 100 mph straight line wind and it sucked the gib off the roller furing and trashed it.

Jotruk,

If those rust stains bother you, you can have them removed at the end of the season by SailCare. I had a similar jib that was almost new but sat folded in a cockpit locker next to a rusty anchor. SailCare cleaned it up beautifully. (BTW, I have no financial interest in SailCare.)

Best,

Well I finally got to sail with both new sails and if the wind had had steady it would have been great. We made about about 12 miles on the lake here and most of it was at about 3 to 4 knots with spurts to 6.7 knots. over all really enjoyed the feel and performance of the sails.

Forgive me if I've already quoted this line--but I love it.

When I ordered a new mainsail from my local sailmaker, he said, "you'll love it. Sailing with a new mainsail is like driving with a brand-new set of steel-belted radial tires."

Just an FYI.  I ordered a new sail from Kelly-Hanson last year and am still waiting.  Haven't been able to get a response on my request for a refund either.

Fortunately or unfortunately you are not alone regarding Kelly-Hanson
