Hi. (I did try the search button ;)) But how and what are you using as a "Preventer/bombrake"??? any second tohought about using it?

FWIW, I don't have either on my little 25-footer, although I've got some low-stretch line that I could use as a preventer if the need arose.
As for a boom brake, the boat I crewed on to and from Bermuda two years ago had a boom brake, and it took a lot of the worry out of gybing, either deliberately or accidentally.

We usually just tie a line to the bail where the mainsheet is mounted and lead it forward to one of our bow cleats. I would like to refine the rig so that we can tack without having to go forward to switch the preventer.

A line from the end of boom/each side, forward will have to do.
Thinking strong downwind sailing and "tacking"...danger :(
Another idea.
A bail aft at the boom end, a wire run forward under the boom with an eye in the end, to a cleat just aft of the gooseneck. Then two rope lines forward from there, one each side with carbiners or shackles on the aft ends. Other ends of course led aft from bow.
Lets you make the connection and tighten forward, from the mast, on either tack.
And it's all cheap ;)
Why does one end of the preventer need to be run to the bow of the boat? There's something here I'm not seeing and understanding (no surprise there). Couldn't the line just be run through a turning block or jib fairlead mounted at the front of the jib track with one end at the boom somewhere, and the other end at an appropriately mounted cleat location?
leverage when the boom is broad off Leroy. From amidships you just put too much strain on things and it's hard to hold the boom forward.
If you use a turning block up front, and lead the line aft, you can adjust from the cockpit as the boom goes out or comes in.
We aren't talking about a kicking strap, which acts like a vang holding the boom down, but a preventer holding the end of the boom forward, to stop a wild gybe.
Just sail a Catketch and not worry, or think about a accidental or planned gybing. ;D ;D ;D I'm sorry but I just had to jump in here.
