I purchased a 1967 Islander 29, this summer. I liked the layout below, I was looking for something livable. Like a floating condo. This was recommended. I also like the full keel and the added weight  and room over the 26ft Ariel. I still find this boat very easy to handle and does well in rough waters, as good as my faithful Ariel.

My two dislikes are lack of sitting headroom in the v-berth and the cockpit is too open.
Otherwise I am digiging the boat.

Now that the rains have started here, with a big storm last week I found out where the leaks are... :(  :-\  ;D

LOL, Zen. :D I've found a few leaks in mine, too. Looking at the pictures, it appears that the I29 has deadlights much like the Pearson Ariel/Tritons have, glass/poly inside of a perimeter frame which basically clamps onto the cabin trunk.

I plan on removing the frames from "Katie Marie", stiffening the area between liner and exterior, and thru-bolting Lexan to the doghouse. If yours are like the A/T deadlights, are you planning on beefing them up in any way before setting out for Japan?

I'd love to have opening ports there, but haven't yet come up with a way to do so that I would consider truly seaworthy. The frames as they are I wouldn't want on a serious crossing - I can too vividly imagine a boarding see (<--Edit: Freudian misspelling? :D lol Have to leave that in...) pushing them straight into the cabin, along with several tons of water. That would be a Bad Thing.

Another alternative would be to make shutters which fit over the deadlights, but then those would have to be stowed when not in use, and space is at a premium.

This is probably a good topic for the Boat Bits section. :) I know there has been lots of discussion on it at the Ariel site, and I imagine at Tim's Plastic Classic site too.

I hear Lexan is the way to go.
Someone, I was looking his boat another I-29, has templates made for the I29 , for tap Plastic who made some Lexan planes for his. I was told I could borrow them when ready.
Otherwise like you I can see a wall of water entering my safe space...
Having spoke with a few other I-29 owners this is the biggest weak spot on the boat, and needs to be handled for blue water sailing. Some also suggested shutters. I think the bolt-on Lexan panes are the way to go.

For making a vessel truly seaworthy, check out James Baldwins incredible site www.atomvoyages.com.

Through-bolting the frames would certainly make them more seaworthy, but I like the look of the bronze frames (if your boat already has them), particularly when they are cleaned up. I replaced the lexan in all of the portlights and polished and rebedded them (I actually put them back on the boat the day before Hurricane Katrina). They are leak free. I used clear lexan for the windows and butyl caulk for the bedding. The nature of the deadlight construction likely makes them vulnerable to huge boarding seas. For me, though, and for my sailing grounds at this time, they are good enough and have already withstood a formidable test.

QuoteI'd love to have opening ports there, but haven't yet come up with a way to do so that I would consider truly seaworthy.

If they are like the Triton's opening portlights, I would feel comfortable taking them around the world. The fit very securely and have a large bronze retaining ring around the outside. If your piece of mind dictates replacement, then go for it, but the rugged construction and the smallish size should make them pretty secure.

QuoteI hear Lexan is the way to go.

It is. It is stronger and will stay clear longer than Plexi. Some say Lexan is more vulnerable to scratching, however, I have not found that to be the case. I am not a fan of Plexi, despite it's low cost.

We had our official naming ceremony today. Easter Sunday. We were married on Easter Sunday  a couple of years ago , so I thought it would be a good to have s/v Zen naming today.

It rained... alot!! When we woke up planning on having breakfast on the boat. That was quickly cancelled.  After a bit the rain slowwed then stop, however it was still very cloudy and could start again anytime.
Let's go I say... we head off.

Starts raining again, as we walk down the dock it is quite steady.
Once we get on board... the sun comes out within moments it is Sunny and warm!
Too late for a sail but enough time for a naming before Lady Zen heads off to work...

Incense and champagne, after mounting and a prayer... we break out the bubbly

A little champagne  to Dad's family symbol now carried on Zen in memorial

Took the lady's out for a short sail today. There was suppose to be light winds. Instead I was able to get some 25 degree heel on just the jib  :o

First time doing a run on just the jib. Figured it was a good day to try. Learned a few things in the process.

Water was a bit rough at times, but once I found the zone in the flow downwind, it was sweet and smooth  ;)
Lady zen even took a nap! She did get a bit seasick at one point heading in there was lots of chop!

Love the lettering on the boat... did you get the lettering in electronic format too??  I asked the guys who did the kitty cat and the lettering on my boat for an EPS file of the artwork and lettering and they were kind enough to send it to me via e-mail.  One of my friends is going to make up some boat shirts for people who sail/crew the Pretty Gee.  I'm also planning on making  some nice boat cards made up for the Pretty Gee with the boat name, home port, my name and website on it.

Thanks "Chingu" ( I hope that is the correct  word :-[ :D)

I did the English lettering and design on my Mac (Mac's rock  8)). The Characters writing was done by my Kung Fu Sifu (teacher) with ink and brush.  I always liked his calligraphy style. In Chinese it says Chan, which is the sect of Buddhism developed in the Shaolin Temple from Taoist and Buddhist thought. In Japanese it means Zen. The Shaolin Temple is where my style of Kung Fu was developed and my teacher's teacher learned.  So it also is a way of honoring my Sifu and our Marital Art family line.  ( haha you guys did not expect a history lesson did you, pretty deep eh) I scanned it into the Mac. All done in Illustrator and Photoshop. The round seal is my wife's family's crest in honor of my late Father-in-Law, he has no male heirs. Afterward I gave the eps file to a couple of people who thought it was to complex reproduce. I finally found someone local who could do it in stick-on vinyl.

I also made some sweat shirts & t-shirts for my sis, & brother in-laws, Lady Zen & myself, also a few for some special friends who may visit/crew can be ordered somewhat cheap here: http://www.cafepress.com
I think they do cups and things as well.

The people who did the vinyl are now doing a pressed on logo from my file for a couple of pillow cases for the interior, which lady Zen made. I'll post a pix once it is done.

Your command of Korean is probably better than mine.  ;)

I too am a Mac user.  If you decide you want to get some embroidered shirts, which is what I am getting done, let me know.  I can ask my friend to make them up for you.  She has an industrial embroidery machine...  I am in the process of trying to figure out how to convert the file from an EPS file to one the machine can understand.. .UGH...  Oh well, better than having to have it done by hand. lol.

I've used cafepress for a few other things.  Can't wait to see the photos.

I know there are a number of lurkers on here. It is unknown what type of boat you have. However if anyone out there has another I-29  ( or know of someone who does) I have started a google group just for US , whoohooo.
Drop in, see pix, advice, parts, etc.

Then come back here to ready her to take on the high seas  ;D
She is was built to island hop. There are two who have been to Hawaii and back one of those has circumnavigated 2 times.
