I noticed that Lost Lake picked up on the fact that I used to fly my Super Cruiser in the Caribbean and South America.  I flew it other places, too: but that's another story :D

I've often found that many sailors fly.  Do we have any pilots on board?  How do you relate sailing to flying?

From a favorite song of mine, by Guy Clark called "Boats to Build"

"Sails are just like wings
the wind can make 'em sing
songs of life, songs of hope
songs to keep your dreams afloat"

Hi Charlie,

Jimmy Buffet's "stout sailor's legs and a license to fly" comes to mind.

Yours is much more poetic :D

I'm a licensed pilot; but my flying days ended some time ago ... too expensive.  Someday maybe I'll get back into it.

I think there are quite a few similarities between flying and sailing.  The charts are somewhat similar and I've been lost both ways (I'm VFR only, btw).  A world of worry to the sailor/pilot who doesn't keep track of navigation (the cheater's GPS not withstanding).  Weather and the ability to read it is an important consideration while both flying and sailing.  Self sufficiency is needed in both as well.  I feel the same sense of freedom while flying as sailing.  They both cost obscene amounts of cash (although I find flying much worse per hour of enjoyment).

[minor edit: originally used the word "analog" for "similarities".  I believe they are basically synonyms; but the dictionary I had on hand didn't define the word the same way.  Have I been using the word wrong for years?  Maybe).

I can't speak about flying, never done it for myself. But sailing sure doesn't need to cost "insane amounts of money" We have five different boats, four of them sail, and I doubt we have 10K invested in the whole lot of 'em.

Sure is a WHOLE lot cheaper than the offshore fishing I USED to do ;D Hey- I fished aboard an outboard powered  25 footer once or twice that cost $55, 000 in 1978!!!!

But then, we have a rule, Laura and I- we never retain receipts nor do add up what we spend on the  boat. It's just not something we care to know- we'd be spending the money anyway, so who cares? Besides- as Laura named our first boat- it's a "Necessity"

We DO keep receipts for items that need it for warranty.
