First off I was really lucky to get this boat.  It's one of the two WC Aeromarine built Tritons with the extra 1500# of lead in the keel which give her a capsize ratio of 1.56 and a cruising comfort level of 35.4. She also came with a newly rebuilt Yamerhamer 2QM15. I paid $3825 for her and added the following equipment @ cost:
LS Sea Tiger windless, used, Minny's                            $300
HF HAM radio, new                                                        $1100
VHF, new                                                                       $180
Remodel interior including raising salon seats
5" for 9 cu ft additional storage space, material           $450
new cushions & upholstery, including V-berth              $480
new stanchions & lifelines (ebay)                                 $260
4 new house batteries (costco)                                    $280
new DC breaker boards (ebay)                                     $52
new AM/FM/CD (SONY) w/speakers Walmart closeout  $84
new charger 20A 2 bank (Triton board)                        $25
new main & 110                                                            $1700
new Furuno radar                                                         $1023
new 65W solar panel w/custom adjustable mount       $333
new windvane (Norvane)                                              $1814
new chainplates, material only                                      $98
Now throw another $500 for things I lost track of and you have it about as close as I can figure.  But I got a boat with comparable if not superior seakeeping characteristics to the Bristol Channel Cutter 28 and it didn't cost me $60,000 nor $250,000 which as I understand it was the price of the BCC.  I probably spent 9 to 12 hours a week on her for a little over a year before I got her in the water.  I even got a few of the bells and whistles in there.  I might add that I have/had a few things from my
East Coast Triton, such as a Dodger and a couple genoas, a drifter, a spinnaker/pole and anchors/chain.....Add that up and that's what a first class small (9660#) blue water cruiser can cost you if you are willing to do your own work and a lot of watching and waiting and shopping for parts and pieces....

Every once n a while i wish we had kept track of what Tehani cost us. But we make it a practice to toss any and all receipts on the boat other than those required for warranty info. So we really don't have a clue.

But it's most likely in the 6 to 8 thousand range. Plus a whole lotta sweat equity.

By comparisons I probably paid more for Che than I could have. But the work done by the PO (chain plates on the side, new bottom paint, hard dodger, new standing and running rigging, decent solar setup) not to mention the fact a good solid hull and the fact that I'm impulsive, made it happen.

I actually like the fact that little else in the way of amenities have been done, so that I can make it the way I want.

I've pretty much decided to sail her on the Bay for the first part of spring and then haul her up here to work on her. I will probably just use the Potter again this fall up north, with the plan of hauling the completely cruise ready Ariel next spring up for a season long cruise.

Hey Tim, don't go second guessing your self.  You got a good boat. Obviously you were satisfied with the price or you wouldn't have paid it.  As of now, you are the only one that needs to be happy with Che....You find something you're not happy with, you change it....but the main thing is you got the boat you wanted.....

Tim

Thanks for the reminder Jim.  ;D Actually I am not really questioning the decision at all.

I just am impatient about getting it to where I want it,

;) something I have to learn how to deal with.

Pappy Jack

Hi all,

I just tallied it up and it comes to $12,504 ;). Not bad at all for a blue water cruiser...not bad at all. If you go to Tim Lackey's web site: www.triton381.com Tim will tell you that it coast him at least six times(IIRC) as much :o, and it shows. Did he spend too much? He says yes BUT it was worth it. Will he get his money back out of it when he sells her? He says no, but it what he wanted and that, in the end, is what matters, is it not? If (when) I were to do it, I'd do it TJim's way. The rest of the money would(will) go into cruising ;D. Just my $.02 worth.

Fair winds,

Well, I think Tim is in a position where he isn't just building a blue water cruiser but also using his boat to advertise his business.  I'll guarantee you that he didn't sub exterior cdx for Marine play in his boat.  I cut a lot of corners where I knew I could get away with it.  Another example would be paint, I spent $9 a gallon for bathroom paint from Home Depot for below decks and he probably spent $30 a quart for marine paint for below decks.  I spent one heck of a lot of time looking and waiting.  Tim has to make a living, mines already made.  Big difference there and a lot of younger guys can better afford to pay Tim because they don't have the time to do it Jim's way.  If I was Tim I'd probably be doing it his way.

Not bad at all!  Just curious, what brand of solar panel did you go with and where did you find it?  $333 is a good deal for a 65 watt with mount.

TJim

Actually, I only paid $191 for the panel.  The rest ($140) was for material to dup-licate James Baldwins solar mount on Atom.  The panel is a Chinese import with
guarantee and is available from:  Roaring Elephant
                                                     1251 Pomona, CA 92882
                                          Phone 951 279 8100
Or you can do a search from ebay home page for solar panel and find all kinds
of solar panels for approximately the same money.
