OK, there is a rough-n-ready, down-n-dirty Scoot website beta version 0.01 up and public for anyone to read. It's just what I've managed to piece together with Adam over the past several days, so don't expect to be awed. :)

Do expect the format of the Scoot discussion here to change somewhat while we figure out how best to order things. :)

This should be interesting and fun! ;D

Grog to ya! That is a mighty fine website if I do say so myself.  How do I add my name to the list? :)

The Scoot has "arrived". Cool  8)

I like the tone of the website, and also the rough and ready look - although IMO an edit would still do no harm  ;D

Ideas are the easy part.......

1) On the Scooters list - add a link column to each participants homepage / blog. (so folk can share ideas on preparation / photos).

2) Would add a link (and some description) to the Jester Challenge, and any other similar (or even vaguely similar!) challenges / races / rallies / events for small boats worldwide. Credibility by association. And maybe some reciprocal links in due course.

3) Would add a Chart / Google earth map of the route and also of both start and finish.

4) I would hesitate to describe myself as an "organiser" on the website (it kinda implies in charge - which kinda implies "responsible"  :o (disclaimers notwithstanding)......I would describe "the Scoot" as an idea, folk may simply choose to subscribe to the idea and may then choose to call themselves "Scooters" ....and therefore I would describe myself merely as "a Scooter" (same as everyone else)......except running a website in support of an idea - and any disclaimers are as a Website owner, not a Scoot "organiser"......because you are not organising anything. Indeed I would strongly argue that "the Scoot" is not actually the idea of those named on the website - the idea was inspired by the Jester Challenge, and then developed between various folk on the internet and in real life......and merely distilled into a website by some for conveniance / in support of an idea - IMO this does not make it the idea of the Website owner(s)..........nor make them organisers.

Good ideas, David. They'll be implemented.

Newt - I'll turn your question into a thread, where folks can post the needed info.

Ah, spoken like a true anarchist.

I will disagree somewhat here, though.  I believe the Scoot definition is so open right now that there isn't a whole lot of wiggle room for a lawsuit.  And I'm beginning to get really annoyed by all the wrangling that has to be done in order to disavow any possibility of someone blaming us.  Someone can STILL blame and sue Kurt and myself.  Anyone can pretty much sue anyone else for anything what-so-ever, and frequently do.  In this case, I think the odds favor us very strongly.

Truly, it is beginning to piss me off.  Aren't two legal adults permitted to loosely organize anything?  Isn't that part of freedom?  Willing participation?  We aren't accepting money.  We have practically nothing that could even loosely be considered a rule.  And frankly, while I HATE being an organizer of anything, I am HAPPY to be considered an organizer here, such as there is any organization going on.

I WANT a small amount of organization.  I want this to be an event.  If it was all about just sailing to Bahamas, I would just keep talking back channel to Kurt and we would maybe go down together.  That is not all that I desire.  I want a framework for other folks to come and join us.  Everything is voluntary.  I'm not trying to tell anyone what to do.  But if folks are interested in doing this EVENT, then all they have to do is more or less follow the basic framework that is set up.  Setting that framework up is ORGANIZING.

Dammit.  I'm sick of qualifying everything to avoid and shred of possible liability.

Agreed, it sucks...  ::)

But then I think that it is clear now that anyone insane enough to do a Scoot is on their own in doing so. :)

I know I am crazy for doing it, and that are much safer ways I could entertain myself, but it's my choice to go, and so - I am.  :)

I'm looking forward to meeting Adam when we start our Scoots, and I am going to try and beat him to the Bahamas. ;D That way I can ring up a big tab at the closest watering hole, and be in no shape to pay my bill when he gets there, so that he will have to pick up the tab. ;D :D ;D

The problem is, you will probably get there a couple of days before me.  I'll probably have to bail you out of jail for not paying your bar tab!

BTW, I'm sorry if my previous missive got a little energetic.  I shouldn't have to worry about things like this.  It takes all (well, maybe not 'All') the joy out of life.

I thought the Anarchist comment was meant in a good way :P

Anyway, fair enuf - appreciate that folk do have differing attitudes and can see why the subject becomes a PITA .........perhaps my default thinking does tend towards the "if they can't prove I was there, I don't have to then prove I didn't do it" view of life  ;). But me last mention of that subject  ;D

My complaint is not directed at you, specifically.  It is directed at the mindset of having to always protect ourselves from every, little friggin thing that comes along.  A bunch of guys (and gals???) should be able to come together for an event like this without us having to lawyer up over everything, and throwing in weasel clause after weasel clause.  If everyone would just accept responsibility for themselves without having to find someone to blame whenever anything goes wrong, the world would be a better place.

Enough said.  Anarchists, libertarians, anti-establishment types are all friends.  Every once in awhile I just want to stand up to the system as it has evolved and say "F--- you!!  I'm not playing your silly game anymore!"  Of course, should I ever do that, it might be good to have the boat stocked up and ready to go 'cause I might need to get away in a hurry.

[edit:  Apologies to Kurt and the rest of the SailFar community for my pushing the foul language boundaries ... I tend to get worked up over things like this).

Unfortunately, the US has become overly litigious and the current court system does little to dissuade foolish or frivolous lawsuits.  If the courts were reformed to require that the losing attorney pay all court costs of the winner, and required any plaintiff's attorney to put up a bond to cover such court costs in case of a loss, I'm pretty sure that 99% of the silly lawsuits would go away.  I say attorney, rather than the plaintiff, since in many of these cases, the attorneys are taking on meritless cases to rack up billable hours, or taking cases with some merit on contingency in hopes of a record settlement.
