S/V Direction

This past week while my wife and I vacationed on Ocracoke Island, part of the North Carolina outer banks, we got to see S/V Direction anchored in Silver Lake.
    This is the Cal-25 that was modified by Dave Martin in the mid 80's and was used by Dave and his wife Jaja to circle the globe and add three children to their family during the years 1988 to 1995. Inside he added bulkheads and storage space out side he beefed up the rigging and removed the pop-top and replaced it with a distinctive dog house.
    After the birth of their third child they stopped in Oriental, NC and sold Direction. A few years later they bought their current boat a 33 ft. steel hulled boat, named Driver, that he modified for his family to live aboard and left the southern waters for some cruising in colder climates.
    Dave and Jaja have proved that you do not need a large boat or lots of money to safely cruise the world. You do need a strong safe boat, the knowledge and skills to sail in all conditions, and how to repair all systems on your boat.
     Direction still looks good and while I did not meet the owner I did see him several times, he looks fit and seems capable of sailing Direction where ever he may decide to go.
     This is a true sailfar boat.

Just a side note: Driver was on yachtworld a few months back, and is not there now, so I am assuming it too is sold to a new owner. Dave and Jaja are still thinking about their next boat and travels atm.

Dave has an incredible knack for getting the best use out of small spaces. I'm sure the new owners of both of those boats appreciate all the work and care that went into their designs.

I haven't seen any good photos of Direction, I would like to. But I was thoroughly impressed with how well thought out Driver's interior was.

Pretty cool you got to see Direction, I imagine there is some sort of 'presence' you can feel when you get to see a little boat that you know has gone so far. Or maybe just a 'wow' factor, i don't know :)
