Wow, I bet 100 years of storms have changed things around a bit, not to mention erosion.

Something that has worked well for me on finding a location to mount transducer inside hall is to put a good blob of Vaseline used as others have suggested.  I like to test at a know site such as dock side where you compare electronic reading with a hand line reading.  For permanent mount I like the 3 or 4 in. PVC route.

An add to the lead line sinker, try adding some lard or such to cup in end.  The grease will pick up sand, small gravel or small shells. compared with chart to fine tune location.   Used by Grandfather and old tyme sailors before modern marvels.

mrb just for info the hand line (lead line) is still in use to day in the Navy. It is required as part of the out fit for a commissioned vessel
