The Nina and her 'sistership' the Pinta came into our docks today. They are enroute to Beaufort, NC, and behind schedule because of an unseasonal nor'easter. One of the crew told me they encountered 13 ft seas on their way from Florida, before coming in to the ICW for the rest of the trip.

Really neat vessels. The website has lots of information. Looking at the boat in person, it is hard to imagine 27 crew living aboard for months at a time.

Even harder to imagine is that once she carried *over 120 people* trans-Atlantic, back in 1496. They must have slept standing upright.

Anyway, below are a couple of pictures.

Hey - what's that on the stern in the last pic??? ;D

One of several Nina's around. There's another set in Corpus Christi. Supposedly the "official" recreations, supposedly built in the same yards and from trees from the same groves as the originals. Note the "supposedly" ;)

The Nina is still  afloat and friends of ours used to crew her. The Pinta and Santa Maria were damaged,  lifted ashore and now are being prostituted as tourist attractions, sitting on the concrete. According to stories, the government in Spain is perturbed with the idea, since these ships were intended to be educational exhibits, and there is talk of Spain demanding them be either repaired, re floated and put back into informational use, or sent back to Spain.

Meanwhile they are being walked through and people are being charged for the privilege.

Note that there are NO below decks accommodations on Nina. All crew except officers slept on the main deck, open to the weather.

Personally, I hope the Spanish government demands them back. Sad to see something like that sold as an amusement park thing.

Maybe we should all order a bunch of stickers and see what we can tag! Maybe the really big obnoxious yachts! Like the guy with the 50fter that can`t leave the marina because the ice maker isn`t working(we all know one). ::)
