Chris, really glad to see you're getting the survey done.  Which ever way it goes, we wish you the best with her.  At least you'll have a much firmer idea of what you're dealing with.  You'll know you are really into it when you have a Master List to organize your work lists. ;D

Now, when it's blowing a blizzard, you can spread the charts and cruising guide out on the table and start planning those imaginary voyages that will soon become reality.
The only thing better than sailing is breathing, but neither is of much worth without the other.

Well deal is done.  I GOT ME A BOAT!!

Thanks to all of you for your perspectives, opinions, and encouragement!  This site has been a fantastic resource.

Just waiting on title now.  Boat comes with a lot of extras which is great.  Newish dodger, tiller pilot, GPS, new battery charger, and quite a few sails.

The coamings and grab rails need attention and I'd like to drive up to the boat in the next couple weeks and get all of the things out that I want to work on.

Couple quick questions:

Duct tape serve well enough to cover the holes where coamings and handrails are attached to keep water from getting in over the winter?

Orbital sander the best tool to revive the coamings? (at least until the hand sanding)

What do I use to rebed coamings and handrails?

Thanks!!

Is it April yet??

 ;D Congrats!  ;D

Instead of duct tape, use aluminum tape; it won't break down from UV. Try this Google shopping link to see what I'm talking about. Your local hardware store prolly has it in stock. Also comes in handy for glassing repairs, since you can easily make dams and lips with it, if needed.

Sanding: an orbital should work fine, with proper grit papers. Don't discount the use of strippers as another alternative - save some elbow grease. ;)

Rebedding: Generally, I like LifeCaulk for things that will likely get removed, 4200/5200 for things that won't.

Congrats on the new boat! Can't wait to hear about your progress and splashing her next season! Going to keep her name?

Thanks guys!

I'll definitely check out the tape.  I haven't had a good enough look at the coamings, but if there's still finish to remove I'll use a chemical stripper of some sort.

I want to get the cushions out of it and get a good washing of the interior in before everything completely freezes.  The interior has a slight vintage boat smell... not bad, but the wife likes a lemon fresh scent so if I can get everything scrubbed down and the smell absorbing/radiating cushions out hopefully it will smell better by springtime.

New interior cushions are tops on my list of needs.  Will research the cost to fabricate, but I'm not above laziness to just purchase outright for the right price.  The wife also wants nice cockpit cushions.   She looked up online and found the "Bottom Siders" site and like the looks of those but they are expensive.

Can't wait to get sailing!

Thanks guys!  I'm really excited and feel like I got a great deal.  Here are a few more pics from my first trip to see her.  It's about an hour and a half drive so I won't have more pics til I get up there to get the cushions and some other things out of the boat that I want to work on.

She's a mighty big boat compared to the Ensigns I'm so used to sailing...  and I'm going to have to get used to this whole engine thing... :)

This is driving me nuts... We've had a good month of awful cold and now darn near a foot of snow.  I have so many projects I want to tackle on the boat, but I need it to be at least 25 degrees and not pouring snow so I can be on it for a few hours w/o freezing my planters off...  I can't remember the last time it was above 25 outside...

What I most want to do is get inventory of everything the boat needs to float and go.  I'll be photographing everything in detail so I can study the boat at home a bit, that is if I can ever get up to see it.

The wife bought me a bunch of tools, including a really nice new table saw, for the projects I want to undertake for spring...  Need to measure something before I cut though!

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr   >:(
