Desperate for Help - Albemarle Sound !
Dear Friends-

We lost our dog overboard in the Albermarle Sound on Sunday, Nov 14 ? if you have heard anything about a dog (or its body) being recovered, we would very much like to hear from you. We live aboard a boat, so we only have email and cell phone for communication. Bucky was a yellow lab mix, n/male, 75 lbs., 9 yrs. old, wearing a yellow life jacket. I will try to attach a copy of the flyer we are passing out.

Thank you so much,

Gratefully yours,

Jane Hanson

I'm not too awfully far away...maybe 1.5 hrs.
do you want me to try and head over to the area where you last seen him and try to ask around?
also you can ask the police in the are to leave messages with the shrimpers and crabbers. if you want I'll try and find the local animal control dudes and see if they have a lead. I just need to know roughly where the pup was lost at. if you need me you can  Email me @ hearsejr (at) yahoo.com or call 919 396 8448 ( got unlimited everything so I'll be glad to return the call if you get free incoming calls or something.)

 thanks,
 Bill

Oh don't get me wrong Bill, I appreciate your desire to help.. it just sounded like you were replying to me.

I get sick when I think of this poor dog paddling away, thinking he has been left behind.  :'(

I have shared this on other forums, if I lived in the area I would join in the search (& pass out flyers) myself.

Here is a grog for you for your offer to help.

I wish I could do more. I sent them an email and hopefuly I can narrow down the search area and can get the word out. there's a lot ground around that sound,  ya know.

truly sorry to hear about this. our thoughts are with you and if it helps , when we had problems in the Albermale sound we found things end up in Bull Bay (south western area)  Theres a big 4H camp there.

I truly hope all turns out well.

Sure hope the pup makes it OK, in whatever way possible.

Over the years, my former magazine published a number of stories about dogs that fell overboard and were rescued, including a story of a Lab who was lost off Block Island and was retrieved by commercial fishermen.

If it's any consolation, there are a lot of good folks on the water -- and lots of 'em are dog lovers!

Let's hope this turns out well.

Update as to the possible location....

QuoteWe left Elizabeth City around 9:30 am, traveling about 8 knots per hour - he was on the bow for 3 or 4 hours - after that I showered and made lunch for about 1/2 hour, came up, ate my sandwich, tossed crusts down to him and he wasn't there. After a search below decks, we turned around and tried to retrace our route - searched about 2 hours, only found crab pots.

here are a couple of places that used to be open last time I was fighting a wild fire over that way. if someone can give them a call in the morning to see they heard anything maybe we can get the ball rolling.

Elizabeth City SPCA of Northeastern North Carolina 252-338-5222

Elizabeth City American Bullmastiff Rescue-North Carolina Chapter 757-560-6734

I have not contacted thiese folks in a while, so, I make no promise the numbers are still good.
I also emailed the city to see if they have an idea on who I can contact in the area.

I think Richard Olson runs the town for now, maybe someone can drop him a line and see if he can help. his last known office number was (252) 337-6864

I thinking if some one could try and get the Coast Gaurd air station number and see if they have heard anything, maybe one of the locals could have called them up or something. I guessing if the boat was going south, maybe the pup will be around the airport.
  just thought.

sent an Email to the city manager's office and got this response back:
I forwarded this information to the Convention and Visitors Bureau and asked
that they post notices at the waterfront on the off chance that another
boater may have picked Bucky up.  I also called the SPCA.  They already were
aware and are keeping an eye out for him.  I don't know what else we can do
except keep the information on file in case we hear something more.

I am so sorry about this for the owners.  I, too, have a dog and I know what
he means to me.  I am sure they must be heart broken.

QuoteBucky?s remains were found today at RoanaokeIsland by a kind fisheries ranger. He tried calling us several times and we finally had to drive halfway to town to get reception and speak to him.
We would like to thank everyone for kind expressions of sympathy and creative and helpful suggestions to find him. Thank you friends, one and all ? you have been wonderful.

My deepest sympathy.

Those who haven't gone through it will never appreciate how difficult it can be to lose a beloved pet.

Bless you,

I believe there is great value in considering the terrible reality of the situation.

Keeping Peter aboard has always been a great concern.  Off shore he is tethered, (often even when I am not).

Can you imagine what this would be like if it were a small person who went missing?

Systems to prevent such a tragedy are very much worthy of discussion / consideration.
