 I signed up on Google Latitude recently and my friends and family love it. Whenever I log onto GL, it marks my location, so when anyone who I have added as my friend can see the location where I last logged on.
I know that it's not for everyone, but I like it, and I can choose my friends or hide my location if I want to.
