Many who have been around here for some time will remember my concern about the potential for government to impose mandatory AIS (transmitting) requirements on recreational boaters.

I still have these concerns and will be surprised if we do not see this move some time in the future.

I doubt you will see mandatory AIS transmitting for recreational boaters for many years if at all. After all there is not a mandate to even have a vhf on a boat. Actually even the 12 volt system to power it isn't essential.

AIS receive, as the Standard Horizon 2000, 2150, and now the 2000 have is very nice to have, especially when linked to a plotter with a larger screen that the Vhf has for better visibility. Icom is introducing a Vhf with AIS receive this year also, but I doubt the price will be very competitive with Standard Horizon.
