Got to the Keys for the first time last week. My brother sold his sailboat and bought a 36 foot trawler. Sounds insane to me but that's what he wanted. The trawler was in Fort Myers and its new berth is at mangrove marina in the Keys.
It was a fun trip we took our time and did it in 5 days. Did the seafood fest at Marathon. Later went to a waterside pub on boot key harbor for some cold ones and conch fritters.
I found out that I have no desire to do the pure power boat thing. I can't wait to get my boat done and head that way for the winters. I will have to start navigating, I developed a lot of bad habits with my last boat only drafting 18 inches. My new one will have a 4 foot draft which will be OK down there but I will have to put more thought in my routes.
I really think my brother is going to get tired of setting around on a trawler when he could be out on the water much more with his sailboat, time will tell.

Paying his bill at the fuel dock will dampen his enthusiasm for sure!  :D
