NOMN

Hi all, can we?!!???

I would LOVE to see a collection of boats here proven for ocean worthiness.

?? Enlarge a bit on your desires.

But the Meridian 25 I used to have certainly qualifies, as does CptnK's Ariel, and James Baldwin's Triton, just to name three

I guess we could use this thread to gather info for a downloadable spreadsheet which specifically lists particular boat models, and further indicates *known and proven* info (as opposed to conjecture) about them like:

Has X-model crossed an ocean/sea?
Has X-model circumnavigated?
Has X-model been used in any other type of extraordinarily long, open-water voyage?

Any model submitted would also have to include: Which body of water, skippers name, # of souls aboard, dates, links to 'proof'.

Other ideas?

I guess we could

Yeah, I guess we could.  But the list is going to get VERY long.

Not trying to be snarky, but I do have to ask the OP's motivation for this.  Ocean capable boats, with track records, are not a secret.  He's been pointed to Vigor's book already, which is a great starting point in terms of hull "styles."  Start with those 20 boats and then look at variants, and soon the list is over 200.

Carl's sail calculator can be searched by LOA, CSR, etc.  Let's say for "ocean capable," we want a boat with a CSR < 2.0.  With that search, Carl's database spits out hundreds of boats.

In other words, Carl has already compiled the master list, now we can simply refine it with "known exploits" for various models.

I respectfully submit that there are MANY, MANY capable boats, and that the skipper is the key term in the equation.

I suspect that if NOMN wants input on HIS boat search, a better approach would be to better define his needs (other than just budget, as that's not really all that helpful).

Here's a few boats and sample skippers right off the top of my head:

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.  -Mark Twain

I agree.  This is something I was looking for when I first signed on, too. But since then I've come to see it as an awfully broad question.  Still, when it's ready to go I will help get things started at the short end with Frank Dye's 1964 North Atlantic voyage from Scotland to Iceland (http://www.glit.info/uswayfarer/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=20&Itemid=39)  in my current favorite, the Wayfarer 16.  Pretty impressive sailing.  It kind of rounds out the range of possibilities.

I did the Sail Calculator search for boat with CSR < 2.0 and LOA < 32.1.  Not a bad "starter list."

Here is a list somebody went to the trouble of putting together;

It has some notable missing boats though  ;)

I respectfully submit that there are MANY, MANY capable boats, and that the skipper is the key term in the equation.

Expanding on this a bit, it has often been said that the boats are usually more capable than the skipper.

An anecdote to illustrate: a boat anchored near the mouth of Upper Broad Creek broke loose during Hurricane Irene in 2011. The boat was found over 80 miles away near Englehard, NC....that's over 80 miles in a hurricane with no skipper aboard at all.

There are many ssimilar stories.

If the expectation is to buy a boat that one can hop on and sail across an ocean, I think that highly unlikely.  Any boat is going to have to be modified to suit the needs of a particular skipper and sailing offshore.

I contend one should be wary of the ad (or popular descriptions) that says "Blue Water Ready."  In my opinion, that's rare enough to be basically considered a fantasy.  It MAY mean the boat was blue water ready for the previous owner; that's the best that can be said.

Lot of good boats missing from that list, but overall...the research and effort into that site is quite amazing.  Each boat name is a link to a page full of info that does not look cut n pasted (to me at least) from other sites...borrowed info, perhaps, but not cut n paste.   ;)

I also noticed Auspicious' design is missing, though smaller HR's are listed.  Oh well...probably a work in progress, eh?

NOMN

Yay!! Now we're getting somewhere..

Pictures would be even cooler!

Maybe we can make it a community project, where chosen admins can update it, so the burden isn't on one set of shoulders.

The reason I would love to see a list, is because I'm in the boat market!!

Sounds like a good project for you then, NOMN. Since you're undoubtedly poring over countless websites full of boat information and weighing it all in your head, you could easily organize it in a google docs spreadsheet and share access with anyone else interested in the project.

It could be filled with basic data and hyper links to owners associations and pictures, or contain any other information that you like.  There are already some fairly giant shoulders you can stand on, if you're interested. I suggest checking out James Baldwin's Atomvoyages website, as he as compiled a healthy (though of course not comprehensive) list of "seaworthy" small boats.

I had typed up a lot more to add to this reply, but on reflection, and remembering a certain post about the tendency to be discouraging to newcomers, I sheepishly deleted it. Good luck on your boat search NOMN, but just remember, "The map is not the territory".

Thanks. And you're right, I would love to do it!!

Short answer = pretty much anything.

Long answer - would be about someone finding out what sort of boat designs would be suitable for the trip(s) and what would be suitable for self (including from the enjoyment angle!). Picking a boat simply because someone else used it for a similar trip only says that they lack the knowledge needed to succeed, at least enjoyably.

In practice most of the search for a suitable boat will be wrapped around finding one at the right price, in the right condition, in the right location and at the right time........all for "you". and only you. And you can complicate matters even further with own personal preferences.......

It is all about you!, you!, you!

The good news is that oodles on the web and plenty of books written to help learn about boats and what designs would be suitable to guide you to an informed choice - just don't take anything as gospel, until proven by yourself as being so.....and soon enough will get a good handle on choices (and better questions than a variation on "which boat is best?"). And don't confuse wishful thinking with reality......reality always wins out!

But for a "sailfar" list, could maybe list 3(?) in various lengths / designs (up to 30 foot) that could be suitable  - perhaps with rider that they be reasonably available in numbers and on the cheaper end of the spectrum.? But I leave that to someone else!
