The trend in electronics is to integrate everything onboard, and you can read on some other forums endless threads by folks trying to figure out how to make everything play nicely. I've run into people out cruising in beautiful places who were spending all their time and money trying to fix complicated systems. No matter how great it is at first the sea air will get in, things will break, parts will not be available, and help will be a long and expensive trip away. It used to to be that engines, watermakers, and refrigeration were the top three topics on forums because they endlessly need tweaking and repair, but now electronics are in the mix somewhere. Don't set up your boat so you depend on the proper functioning of electronics.
