New (to me) Compac 16

Hi all!!
Haven't posted in a while for a couple of reasons. Firstly, too busy readying the boats for the season. Then, my eldest offspring and I took a ten day passage round and about the Chesapeake. We got back to Urbanna the Friday before Memorial Day, and I started back to work on that Tuesday. Work is the final reason I've been absent. West Marine in Richmond has taken me on as a sales consultant (read:clerk). I love it, love the folks I work with, and the customers. Keeps me tied up 5 days a week though, and then I need a day to recover, and a day for boat stuff. It rained all day today, (a day off) so I was able to get a few indoor chores done, and additionally, do some much needed cleaning on the 1980 Compac 16 that I bought last week. This boat brings my total sailboat count to 5. I really did buy this one as a resale boat, but the more I read about them, the more I want to sail it. Kurt, I realized just moments ago that you're also the Compac Owners group administrator. So tell me all you know about these boats, and convince me that I should keep her!!! Her name is Coral Reefer, she's a 1980. I think I am the second owner. Full set of sails, including a very clean main,jib,genoa, and spinnaker. She came with a 3 1/2 hp Sears outboard that has only been in the water once. The only real downside is the mast and boom. Both have some saltwater pitting that I need to address. I'm thinking about glass beading them, and then painting with two part epoxy. Other than that, the boat is pristine. One or two small stress cracks around the mast step area, but it seems to be all gel coat and not into the glass. I can deal with that. The interior is clean and dry, with original cushions and wood trim. I will need to remove some flaking paint and repaint the interior, but I have plenty of Brightsides Yacht enamel left over from the topsides of my Columbia Sabre.
I'll post photos of Reefer as soon as the weather clears and I can get some decent shots.
If anyone is interested in possibly purchasing her, she'll be on the market in the low to mid $3k range.
Later all, off to bed, and down to the docks tomorrow to go sailing if the weather holds out.

Larry,

I know someone possibly in the market for a trailerable boat in the mid-upper teens that is easy to rig. How would you rate the Compac 16 in that regard? Good trailer-sailer?

(I'm showing my ignorance of this design....I guess I should do some research before posting, but, well ... )

You cannot have too many boat, in my opinion. I've got two: my Skipper's Mate 17 and a Bolger Gypsy I built.

From what I have been reading, a great trailer sailor, and easy to rig. I did it single handed, and only dropped the mast once, lol. I'll get some photos posted.

Larry, Congrats on your new Compac! Naturally I am thrilled with your purchase cause PD is the Compac 27/2. Sweet boats, well built! I love it when another Compac owner joins in. :) They build them down here in Florida.
You might want to have some fun sailing on her before you sell her.

The Hutchin's bros have done a total re-design of their compac 16...REAL NICE..if ya like lil boats ( I do ) They have flaired the hull , shortened the keel/centerboard , added a lil bowsprit (better pointing) and totally re-designed the cabin and cockpit to turn this into a sweet looking , better sailing trailorable cruiser. They have managed to keep the price reasonable (remember..TODAY"S new market) at $11500

That sure is a pretty little boat. I cannot help but notice the similarities with the Sanibel (which has long been compared to the Com Pac 19)

Is the rear arch being used as a traveler for the mainsheet? If so, is it really strong enough to handle that kind of load—it doesn't really appear to be.

Mast support when trailoring and travellor when sailing....strong enough??..lots !! The flicka has it's 'travellor' off the stern pulpit...same idea only way more sail erea and stress

I think the Sanibel 17 is about 400lbs.

Here's a link to the Compac Legacy with some specs.

Doesn't say about ballast, but looks like total displacement is 1000 lbs.

The real nice thing about this boat is that it rigs literally in seconds...supposedly, even faster than the SunCat.

The CP-16 has 400# of concrete ballast. I reckon the legacy is the successor to the 16. I read somewhere that the ballast is a little less than the 16. Sail area is a little greater than the 16, so she should be a little more exciting. Especially in lower wind speeds. Of course, exciting is a relative term. ;)

There's a couple of other differences between the 16 and the Legacy, but the obvious ones are seen in the photos. I am curious about how one handles compared to the next.
