Doing a yard walkabout yesterday. So much damage. So many dead boats..
This struck me odd
A 44ft Hunter... yes.. 44ft... had this for a hull skin over the coring
Scary!!!

Whatsa matter, Frank? ;)  That is the same as my Macgregor 22, and it has held up for 40 years, plus or minus. ;D

I don't even have the coring to back my hull up, so it is stronger than my boat! ;D

Speaking more seriously, I certainly hope that there are a lot of reinforcing ribs in that hull.  That seems to be a relatively flexible construction other wise, and flexing would tend to separate the coring from the outer hull, and further reduce the strength of the hull.

I sailed on a Hunter in the mid 30's of feet, and the owner proudly showed me that the through hulls were all at one place and combined.  All outgoing was one, all incoming was another,  2 valves to shut off all outside water.  One piece of flooring to raise to reach both of them.  The incoming was forward from the outgoing a foot or so, which would be adequate when under way.  At anchor, I would not want my engine cooling water and air conditioner water coming from that close to the hot water going out.  Flushing the toilet, or draining the sink while some one else is using the salt water rinse would be interesting too...... :P

Of course, you never forget to close the Y valve........ 8)

Both Catalina and Beneteau are mass produced "production run" boats but both have solid laminate hulls. I always found Hunters were "pretty at the boat show" with everything set up so the female in the buying equation would react positively... a good marketing move. Early hunters weren't too bad but they certainly went for cost savings as time went on.
Sad when a 25,000+ pound 44ft boat has the same outer skin as your lightweight Mac 22 at what, about 1500 pounds?
