Bristol 27

There is a Bristol 27 going for the 'buy it now' price of $7995 and the current bid is $2025 on Ebay.

Also an Alberg design, it is a nice looking boat with performance numbers similar to the Ariel.  Anyone here have/had one?

Never had one...but sailed on one a while back...12 years or so ago.  I'd be leery of buying a boat over e-bay without a survey.

My research into the B-27 was very positive.  I found my Ariel, which was what I wanted sooo.....

  A survey on a boat below 10k is not generally worth the money, unless you are a first time boat buyer.  I would definitely be more inclined to buy a boat I had seen, but depending on the price....

  That is a killer deal, and with the sellers feedback rating I would even make a bid on it unseen!  it either was painted in 2006, or not, and the hull redone and interior... just the equipment is worth a couple grand.

  If you pulled the trigger on it, and it was horribly mis represented, you have 3 means of appeal.  Paypal, ebay, and small claims court.

  Man what a great deal!  (I bet they run the bid up near the 'buy it now' before the auction closes.)

This Bristol is a great sailing boat that has been looked after well over her lifetime. She sleeps 4 to 5 comfortably in a forward v-berth, double, and long starboard quarter berth. Aft of the v-berth to port is a marine head, to starboard is a large hanging locker. Next is the salon which features a u-shaped dinette and seating area.  The dinette converts to a comfortable double. The galley is to starboard, with a alcohol stove, sink, built-in icebox, and lots of storage. The bulkheads and trim are newly varnished holly and formica. Plentiful interior lighting. She has had a fairly recent refit including Newly upholstered cabin cushions and new curtains in cabin that complement its beautiful holly wood interior. A pull out addition has been added to dinette to accomodate two tall people very comfortably for sleeping (This neatly folds away while not in use). New brass light fixtures in cabin.The cabin is beautifly maintained with a generous amount of standing headroom. 

She has a generous 6'2" cockpit that has been appointed with new  burgundy Sunbrella cockpit cushions. 

Mechanically she is powered by a Evinrude 8 horsepower engine that always starts and runs (about 110 hours) that is sealed in a self-bailing motor well in the lazaret.New deep cell 12 volt Marine Battery bought this year.

She has a Ivory Hull with a fresh gel coat to fill any spider cracks in 2006, as well as stanchion refit in 2006. She is a deep draft model, drawing four feet. Waterline length is long, and these boats sail very well, and handle rough weather well. She has fresh coat of black Interlux bottom paint in 2006. Her stern is freshly adorned with a Celtic Knot on her bow and port side.

She has a spinnaker pole, a little used spinnaker, main, working jib and a #1 genoa. There is a Black main sail cover.

As with all boats, she has the normal wear and tear expected with a used boat, but is in good, if not excellent condition, especially considering her age. These boats were overbuilt and are extremely solid with very sturdy rigging. Mine has been well maintained and is very safe and reliable.

These boats are great sailing, safe and fun. Mine has been cruised extensively only in fresh water and is used on a regular basis. She will turn heads in any port as she is absolutely gorgeous with her Ivory hull and clean lines.She is a classic and is ready to sail.

Nice looking boat. I would agree with s/v faith the seller has good feedback so that is a plus. I was also told about the survy on a bargin price under 7-8,000 not really worth the cost, unless you onpw zip. It would be nice if you could get a shot of the bildge. It does look like someone took some care of her. It is a great deal at the current price, but it will go up in the final hour.
That is when folks get serious.

They were still building sturdy boats in the 70's. Chances are good, even if it needs some work, it would be a worthwhile investment

It could be a good boat but it's hard to tell from the description.  I bought my Paceship on Ebay, sight unseen. As it turned out, I got lucky and ended up with a very good boat at a fantastic price. One strategy I used was to call the marina where the boat was stored and hired a fiberglass repair guy for a couple of hours to take a look at the boat for me. He was able to take moisture meter readings of the hull and give me a professionl opinion. Even though it wasn't as complete as a survey it was very useful and money (under $100) well spent. The Bristol 27 is a boat listed in John Vigor's "20 smalll saiboats to take you anywhere" book.
In the 'known weaknesses' section Vigor lists the following:

"Here are some points to ponder if you are thinking of buying a Bristol 27 for long distance voyaging"

>don't choose an outboard model

(I suspect the outboard is better suited for coastal curising -~ok)

> there have been reports  of leaks in the hull/deck joint..check inside with a flashlight for leaks

>get rid of the main boom roller reefing system

> there's not much through ventilaion

My biggest concern would be a soft deck. Expensive to repair. You could also email the seller and ask if there's been any history of blistering and if there are amy soft spots on the deck. These boats are sold 'as is, where is' but you can sometimes get a clue by guaging the seller's response to a direct question. Might be better if you could talk to him on the phone.

WOW!

  Whoever 'Gull1969' is, they got a great deal.  The boat went for just over 3k!  For that price, it could have a 4' hole in the side and still be a great deal.  :o ;D

  Hope you find your way to this site (if not here already) to tell us all about it.  ;D

  FWIW, Boat US did not require me to get a survey to insure my boat with them (couple years ago).  The guy who I did a delivery for 2 weeks ago (Hunter 30) was not required to get a survey (progressive?) and the owners of 'Ariel Spirit' (last month's delivery) were not required to get a survey either.

The Meridian is one number lower than Tehani. She was recently bought from a man named Rick, for considerably less than is being asked, although that isn't a bad price considering.

Would be a good boat if you could get it for about 4500 or 5000.

I sailed my Bristol 27 from Melbourne FL to Cuba and back via Okeechobee to NYC via Bahamas.

GREAT BOAT - a few "characteristics" but very seaworthy - was ready to cross the pond to Ireland when I sold her in NYC - for 8400 (less "costs")

I paid 2200 and spent 3k and it was worth every cent...

She had a bad-ass rat aboard so I re-wired and plumbed her.

I have a line on a Bristol 27 that needs some work, but could be had for less then $1000, probably more like $500.

  It is in NC, at my old marina.  If you are SERIOUS I can give you more info.

  I too was looking at twenty sailboats (book)and have seen several Bristol 27s go for between 500 and two thousand here in New England.   I was looking for a Bristol 30 when I found my Albin Vega on Ebay.If it is ok on this board I will post any good deals I see in the area.

  Bill A couple of weeks ago I saw a marina in Groton Ct  or Mystic giving away two 26 to 28 sailboats and a motorboat.I dont have the marina the marina name anymore. I was hot in search mode at the time. You might want to check craigslist for your friend.They were not full keels  so I didnt call. Good luck  Dean

I don't mind if they aren't full keels myself. I'm sure anything will be better then nothing.
I looked through Craigs list but didn't see anything..well I saw a 22'er, for $900 but she was in bad shape. the deck was roted big time, and the rudder was busted, and mast bent, and bulkheads shot.
