Yep.  On a more serious note, this is one of those graphs that shows the fundamental flaws in most of the 'global warming' analysis.  The famous "hockey stick" graph that started the whole global warming fad is just this sort of thing - it can be shown through proper analysis that the correlation between the two variables is fortuitous.

In just the same that some claim we need to stop CO2 emissions to halt global warming, this graphs suggests we need an increase of pirates to stop global warming.  While it seems like a ridiculous comparison, the basis for this type of comparison is a core tenent of logical analysis.

If anyone wants to see some more (detailed) info on the analyses that show the flaws with the hockey stick graph, PM me and I will reply with some links.

as far as global warming is concerned I think one natural  event such as the Mount St Helens occurance or the Pinatubo thing in the Philipenes or the on going Mt Kiluea in Hawaii makes any kind of man made greenhouse gas emissions a "drop in the bucket" compared to these naturally ocurring events have have been taking place since the Big Bang

Even if there were no global warming, Western society is ripping through precious, non renewable resources such as oil at a completely unsustainable rate. Future generations (who know how many there will be) will curse us for our profligate ways. It seems that humans are extraordinarily short sighted. For instance growing corn to make biodiesel; as if we will need less food in the future than we do now!!!

OK, rant over-my apologies.

Oded,

You've sorta hit sideways onto one of my 'arguements' on topics such as this.  And that is, we should respect the earth for its own sake.  Conservation in general is good because it is the right thing to do.  A lot of arguements that come up sidestep that aspect of it - they often seem to focus on "reasons" we should conserve.  Maybe rationalizations is a better word.

To make this sailing related, :) , that's ONE of the reasons I like sailing so much.  When sailing, I feel in close contact with wind, wave, weather - the earth and the natural system - unlike how I feel when powerboating.

To some people, it seems, sailing is nothing more than a sport - no different from powerboating, except the 'fuel.'  I think there is a dimension to sailing far beyond sport - one of spirituality - but maybe that's just me.

Okay, corney setting going back to "Low" now.  :)

As this is a boating site I will not go off on this.
however.
Cars, factories, Electric plants, airconditioners, etc etc. run 24/7 for the most part.
multi-times, China, USA, Europe, South America, Russia, Italy, Spain, Japan, etc.
makes a couple of Mt St Helens, almost nothing. Natural events have occured for thousands of years, but have not done the damage to the great barrier reef, the air, the icecap that we, humans have done in our last 100 grive or take years. Not to forget we have and still are reducing the rainforest DAILY, the very thing that helps keep the planet environmentally balanced

Anyway that is MHO like & body exit locations everyone has got one, and that will end my 2 yen on the subject  :-X

Personally, I find it highly suspect that proponents of global warming theories have been ignoring this particular piece of data. Never before have I heard the pirate ratio connection mentioned, but it certainly makes a lot of sense to me. Thanks to Ken, now we all know the truth that "They" are trying to hide from us!

Aaarrr!!!

On a lighter note... if the globe does continue to warm, we'll have more oceans and larger lakes to sail in...and there be more need for boats.  ;)

A little something that the Grateful Dead did some years ago puts it into some perspective:

We don't own this place, though we act as if we did,
It's a loan from the children of our children's kids.
The actual owners haven't even been born yet.
