once again hurricane season draws near.it doesnt mean a thing  to those of you on the western seaboard, but my memories conjure up visions of my boat floating amongst the debris of the marina that has yet to be rebuilt from 2004.2005 destroyed what was left of it.I am still in the healing process of thyroid  cancer and have not been able to do much to  the boat but it is infact in a much safer place.....well inland in a very small parcel of water(no fetch) surrounded by buildings on 3 sides(protected from wind) absolutely no new damage from 2005,but who is doing what to prepair for this year's storms......now I want to hear from everyone on the east and gulf coasts.....this is NOT to be taken lightely....everyone answer at the same time-----

I am changing my hurricane plan.

Last year I remained in the slip for 'Slow moving Ophelia' as my insurance coverage has me listed as staying there (or moving the boat on the hard, which is impractical).

I now will anchor in a somewhat protected hurricane hole.

The change has come from study of successful boats riding out storms, and I think 'Faith' will fare much better if allowed to fight the storm on her own, without having to fend off other boats and hard edges of docks.

I have 300' of 5/8 three strand, which will connect to the bow via a bridle.

My 'storm anchor' is a #17 danforth, with 10' of chain shackled to the eye of a #25 CQR on 50' of chain.

Looking at some fancy 'new generation' anchors.  OBTW, if you want a good discussion on the ROCNA, the Madison Supreme, and the SARACA with the designers and sales reps debating them take a look at The discussion on 'New generation' anchors on the Pearson Ariel page.

Faith, I just attended some seminars at the Miami Boat show.  Regarding anchors... Pam Walls has done extensive cruising.  She said she dragged all over anchorages for years while using her CQR.  Stated it is no longer even carried on their boat.  Speaks very highly of the Delta .... weighted end on pointed nose.  States it digs right in, no spongy line feeling, very little backdown needed to set.  She swears by it.  She has spent lots of time in the Bahamas too and that is what she uses there.   Stated if she had to pick 1 anchor, the Delta would be it.  She also has a High Tensile Fortress on board too as well as some others depending on need.

I agree with getting off the dock.  Seen too many boats really damaged from being on a dock.   I anchor mine off the dock now.   I feel like she has a better chance.   Try to be on the windward side of the other boats; of course when the wind changes.... :o   I am not looking forward to the "season"     ::)

Well I did my little Voodoo/Conch dance (grew up in the Keys and the Louisiana bayous), and sent Ernesto on easterly for you fine folks to enjoy...

But it is a little soon to make boating plans for Wednesday  ::)

Aren't you supposed to be making a trip this week?  A-hem.

I'd think you would have tried to send that storm back out to sea or something with your VooDoo.   ;D

I'm not too worried about it...I have my personal weather goddess looking out for her namesake.  My boat is named for a weather goddess. :D

Watching it close.  I am canceling a business trip to Jacksonville for Wed.  Would prefer to not drive 3 hrs each way in heavy rains.   Keeping my fingers crossed that all my Atlantic buds are safe at harbor.
Adam, good luck.  You might have plenty of wind.   ::)

Who *is* this "Ernesto" fella y'all are talking about???

??? ??? ???

Got my FEMA forms all filled out, so that after the storm I can be first in line. Look for me on CNN... ;) :D

Seriously, though - Guess this means I have to take down my laddermast...  ::) Haven't yet decided - haven't needed to - whether or when to head upriver and find a comfy lil spot to hunker down in. Will be doing some prep for that later today, though, CYA and all that. If'n it looks bad enough, will take supplies and provisions for a few days. Probably put the CrewDogs up at my sisters house. I guess it'll depend on how well the storm holds together across Florida before reemerging out onto the Gulf Stream.

Maybe I should do a "Cap'n Dan" from Forrest Gump, go to sea while lashed to the mast, and get in some experience that might come in handy down around Cape Horn some day...  ;D ;D ;D

Good luck to all in/around the path!

How about a "hurricane party" in the chat tonight? :)

Guilty as charged.....    :P

Hope it fizzles out before either of us (or anyone else) has to deal with it.

At least the forecast has been downgraded since yesterday.  Yesterdays forecasts had it becoming hurricane strength after getting back over the water after FL; today's all say TS until over NC/VA where it drops to TD.
