The Cost Conscious Cruiser - Lin and Larry Pardey

Subtitled "Champagne Cruising on a Beer Budget," this one caught my eye several years ago.  Since I"ve seen CapnK reference it several times, I thought I'd list it here.

While there are some good project chapters, I was particularly interested in two main topics covered early in the book: building vs. buying (used) and what gadgets are really necessary?

The first is settled with a rather detailed description of the economics involved.  The conclusion was building may be cheaper, but (a) not so much and (b) takes YEARS to get on the water.

The second is settled with a very detailed discussion and a handy chart of the the gear carried by a select sample of world cruisers (including Eric Hiscock).  You may be surprised the the gear NOT carried by these successful cruisers, but I think from the discussions on this forum, most here are of the same mindset as the Pardey's - KISS is the way to go.

Another great book by the same authors, Cruising in Seraffyn, by Lin and Larry Pardy.... their adventures and voyages in teir small vessel, definately a great and entertaining book.

ALL their books speak to the small boat person and the KISS principles. Do a 'search'...there are lots !!(have them all..2thumbs up) Storm tactics is a 'must read' if planning on off shore for any distance. These 2 are the model of simple,lowcost self sufficiant sailors.I've met them ...REAL down to earth too.

Lucky me, I got both "Storm Tactics" *and* "CCC" for Christmas. (Thanks, sis! :D) I wouldn't mind having all of the Pardey books. :)
