Thought I'd start a thread where we could post sailing-related quotes, spoken or written or whatever.

Feel free to drop off your own favorites... :)

We were crowded in the cabin, not a soul would dare to sleep---
It was midnight on the waters,And a storm was on the deep.

'Tis a fearful thing in winter,To be shattered by the blast,
And to hear the rattling trumpet thunder,
"CUT AWAY THE MAST"!!!

So we shuddered there in silence,
For the stoutest held his breath,
While the hungry sea was roaring
And the breakers talked of death.

As thus we sat in darkness,
Each one busy with his prayers,
"We are lost" the captain shouted
As he staggered down the stairs.

But his little daughter whispered,As she took his icy hand,
"Isn't the lord upon the ocean,
Just the same as on the land?"

Then we kissed the little maiden.
And we spoke in better cheer,
And we anchored safe in harbor
When the morn was shining clear

Manannan

''the act of dreaming is important in itself.
I wish you an endless flood of dreams and
the intense desire to make some of them come true.
I wish you love for what should be loved
and forgetting for what should be forgotten.
I wish you passions.
I wish you silences.
I wish you bird song on awakening
and the laughter of children.
I wish you resistance to being swallowed up,
to indifference,
to the negative virtues of our age.
Above all, I wish you to be yourself.''

"Voyaging belongs to seamen, and to the wanders of the world who can not, or will not, fit in. If you are contemplating a voyage and have the means, abandon the venture until your fortunes change. Only then will you know what the sea is all about."

you stole it from me Pappy Jack... What a great line and so true, that should be meditated on   :) . Sterling Hayden ''Voyage''  has been one of my favorite too.
Let me quote Bernard Moitessier here :
''I am a citizen of the most beautiful nation on earth. A nation whose laws are harsh yet simple, a nation that never cheats, which is immense and without borders, where life is lived in the present. In this limitless nation, this nation of wind, light, and peace, there is no other ruler besides the sea...''

Thanks Manannan,

The last part of it is also good... "The years thunder by. The dreams of youth grow dim where they lie caked in dust on the shelves of patience. Before you know it, the tomb is sealed. Where then, is the answer? In choise. Which shall it be: bankrupcy of pruse or bankrupcy of life?"

It is so great to start the day with a little poetry. This one is from the Sea Symphony by Walt Whitman :
To-day a rude brief recitative,
Of ships sailing the seas, each with its special flag or ship signal of unnamed heroes in the ships -
Of waves spreading and spreading far as the eye can reach.
Of dashing spray, and the winds piping and blowing,
And out of these a chant for the sailors of all nations, fitful like a surge.
Of sea-captains young and old, and the mates, and of all intrepid sailors.
Of the few, very choice, taciturn, whom fate can never surprise nor death dismay,
Picked sparingly, without noise by thee, old Ocean, chosen by thee
Thou sea that pickest and cullest the race in time and unitest nations,
Sucked by thee, old husky nurse, embodying thee
Indomitable, untamed as thee

My favorite stanza by, Whitman:
"Passage, immediate passage! the blood burns in my veins!
Away O soul! hoist instantly the anchor!
Cut the hawsers - haul out - shake out every sail!
Have we not stood here like trees in the ground not long enough?
Have we not grovel'd here long enough, eating and drinking like
    mere brutes?
Have we not darken'd and dazed ourselves with books long enough?"
.....Passage to India
"The great secret that all old people share
is that you really haven't changed . . .
Your body changes, but you don't change at all.
And that, of course, causes great confusion." . . . Doris Lessing

Sounds like a ball....I'll be heading for the Bay (SFran) Friday for a couple weeks. I'm already dreading coming back to Salt Lake....TJim

Hi T-Jim

Wish you nice sailing in the Bay. I've been living there for 4 years, in Berkeley. End of March should be lovely there. I can almost smell all the flowers blooming and feel a nice warm breeze sweeping the water. If we just can get rid of all the traffic and at least 2 millions people, it would be paradise. Would be so nice to go back in time and sail in through the Gate into the Bay with only the green hills around and some tall ships anchored !!
I am in a dreaming mood again  ::)
