Clogged Sink Drain

After 150 days on my boat I finally clogged my sink drain so badly that I could not get it unstuck. Had to replace the hose. Found out that it made a big, long U and all the stuff that I washed off my dishes did not go overboard but stayed in the drain.

From now on I use a bucket of salt water to rinse my dishes.

Or you could do what we did- glass over the hole in the hull left when the through hull got removed, and don't HAVE a drain in the sink. We just lift ours out and dump it when needed.

Make SURE all the silver ware is accounted for first. Also the dish rag or scrubber.

Our sink started life as a tray in a steam table. Got it at a restaurant supply house for $13.

Clearing sink blockages is what your dinghy inflator pump is for!

I tried the dinghy pump but my drain hose is 10 feet long, a bit to much for it.

The smell was not bad as I had some wooden plugs to put in both ends.

I need a smaller bucket for the sink. Next time I am in Marsh Harbour.

The boat does smell better now.

A dinghy pump!!! I just had dirty dish water in my sink for two days, trying all manner of things to unclog it. For a minute there I thought I was going to have to take the hose off...

But the pump worked wonders, fitting perfectly in the drain hole, and blasting whatever was in there right out to sea - Cheers!

Thanks Nick, I use that to unclog my engin well drain. The sad story on the MacGregor 26M is that THe sink drain goes under the bunk and then UP to the drain. About 7 feet below throughull. The pump did not work.

I know better now. Rinse everything in a bucket of salt water before putting in the sink.
