Hi--
I am looking for a port to call home for the upcoming 2009 summer season, specifically just north of or in, Boston, Massachusetts coastline (or the surrounding area).

Any recommendations? Any ports to avoid, or cautions?

Ideally, I'd find a mooring (with dinghy dock) in and around Boston (accessible from Boston by Taxi/Bus if need be). I've looked at Shipyard Quarters, Constitution Marina, Boston Harbor Marina, Bos Waterboat Marina, Marina Bay on BosHarbor, and Admiral Hill (in Chelsea). I'm guessing there are neat little spots that I just can't find searching online, which is why I'm asking y'all. I have a 28' sloop.

I was in Salem, Mass last year and loved the marina! It makes me sad to think to go elsewhere, but our destinations this year may warrant it.

cheers.

Hey Capt.:

Normally, I'd recommend Salem first. Like you said, they've got lots of facilities and the prices are reasonable. My next recommendation would have been Boston Waterboat Marina.

But it looks like you've pretty well covered the places from Salem south to Marina Bay in North Quincy.

Have you thought about going a bit farther south, to Weymouth or Hingham? Or Quincy proper? There might be something available there.

And what about Winthrop? I'm not sure how difficult it is to get a mooring there, or to join the WYC.

These are just suggestions. I don't think you'll find too many undiscovered harbors between Salem and Boston.

Hey thanks, Joe! I appreciate your suggestions. We stayed in Winthrop for a few days last summer, and really like it. I have a lot to think about here.

You might also try joining the Mass. Bay Sailors group on Yahoo and posting this question. It's run by B. Scanlon, who sails out of the Winthrop YC.

(Have you thought about trying to join an outfit like the Savin Hill Yacht Club in Dorchester? Or seeing about reciprocity, if you belong to another club? I'm not a club guy, myself, so I don't know much about it, except that it's definitely NOT a blue-blazer-and-red-pants kind of place, and it's right at the head of Dorchester Bay in Boston Harbor.)
