What I think is crazy is that those motors are now "fly by wire" steering. Meaning, when you input a turn, the command is sent to a computer that interprets it and then sends a command to an actuator which then (is supposed to) rotate the engine in the direction you desire.
A few weeks ago there was a boat crash on Biscayne Bay, a 39' Contender w/4 450 Merc's (i.e. 1800hp) like that running at speed. The crash was severe enough that it ripped off the t-top, destroyed the center console, and literally tore off about 30' of gunnel on the port side along with a good chunk of transom area when it rolled. After rolling it was upright and continued running in circles until other boaters noticed it and came to aid.
Three souls aboard; one fatality, and two hospitalizations resulted.
One of the survivors said that it looked like they lost power to the dash electronics just before the crash.
I've not seen confirmation of what happened, but highly suspect a power loss to the FBW steering system allowed the torque of those giant engines to induce a sudden turn and resultant roll.

I'd not have that on any boat I own. Nope, no way. Not even if it only makes 6 kts.

Before posting, I looked it up. I think my surmise of what happened may well be correct.

I'd never heard of that steering... crazy eh.

Last winter I went to the Fort Myers boat show with an old sailing buddy.
Neither of us could believe how detached from the current boating market we were!
Everything was "go fast"!
poop there were pontoon boats with 400hp outboards! WTF...

I'm glad I came up when I did and fondly remember the boat shows of the late 70s and 80s.... Tons of boats that I related to.....

End of an era I guess....

Just last week during our Wednesday evening race, a 50'+ yacht blasted through the group on a straight line from 1 day marker to the next.  Myself and 3 other sailboats had to make evasive maneuvers to avoid collisions.  I tried to contact the captain via channel 16, but didn't receive a response.  Neither I nor any of my crew could see anyone at the helm.  We see this a lot on the AICW. Captains set their way points and others be damned.
