Days like this are ones where I am glad I am behind New Bedford's Hurricane Barrier.  :)

Kurt, you had it easy. Not much more than 20 mph. Here in MD we had sustained 40 mph with gust of 48.8 mph (60 kph).  I was in the lee of a 4 story condo and trees all around. I did not get it bad at all.

C Pete,

Hope you had a good sail.  ;)

I think you should question your data sources. Anchored near the head of Back Creek in Annapolis I saw a couple of gusts to 35, an hour or so sustained 20-25, mostly 10-15 sustained with gusts 20-25.

The Thomas Point Lighthouse data shows maximum sustained of 33 kts (one data point) and mostly below 20 kts. Gust data shows one data point of 39 kts but mostly below 30 kts. Thomas Point is pretty exposed.

I might believe numbers like you cited near Ocean City where they saw the front-right quadrant.

I'm glad I got ready and got out of the slip, but Hanna was really a non-event for me and folks I was talking with from Solomons to Baltimore.

Didn't even wake up last night in Boston.  Hannah arrived on cat's feet.

Stunning day here as we prep for a week off.  Hope to make it to the New Bedford YC Whaler's Race this weekend.  They have a double handed division.  We try again!

I got data from Weatherunderground.com .
http://www.wunderground.com/weatherstation/WXDailyHistory.asp?ID=KMDSOLOM1&month=9&day=6&year=2008

At 9:43 am sustained 39.4  mph gust 48.8 (60 was in kph)

It was not bad as we are very sheltered here. If I was in open waters or with one side open it could have been much worse. Been in some of those. As I was very protected I cannot say that I was in those winds as most of the time the winds was comming from the 4 story condo's some 500 feet away.

It's hard to believe we may have another storm coming. Today it was almost perfect sailing, (the air was a little light). A sheer joy to be on the Gulf between Tampa and Sarasota.
Without the weather folks we would be in trouble here.

I don't like Ike this time either......
......Oh well, Laura brought home 12 sheet of 1/2 ply the other day , pre-Gustav, so we have boarding up stuff on hand.

That may be a very good thing, looks like you may need it.  Hope it does not get back up to anything near it's prior strength.

Interesting. Friends of mine where at the marina behind the Holiday Inn and at a private dock up the creek to the North from the island (islet?) off Zanheisers. Neither saw winds anything like what wunderground reported. I wonder what their data sources are?

Not so much true for objective data, but the variation observed wind reminds me of the same phenomenon in observed sea state.

We had just crossed through a pass, and had seen 4-6' seas... we had a visual on a ~50' cat who was behind us by a couple miles.  We heard him calling his friend and heard him report the wave height as 10', which he later changed to "choppy with 12' seas".   ;D

Just to add another wx link to the discussion. http://www.stormpulse.com/

I just read about this one at SailingPensacola.com I had not found any I like more then the boat US tracking page; http://www.boatus.com/hurricanes/tracking.asp

Then I saw http://www.stormpulse.com/ I really like the detailed map, and the option to overlay the models over the top of the projected track.

Good stuff.

Aint that the truth.

I like to check out NOAA Buoy Data

http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/

Also weatherunderground history that Lynx mentioned

Hanna wasn't much when it got to New York--37 kt. sustained gusts and lots of rain. Next day was beautiful as usual

Best wishes to those in Ike's path

Ah yes- Zanheiser's. Best tasting water we found in the Chesapeake for putting in the tanks. Anchored off the lighthouse on two separate occasions while cruising the Chesapeake. Hope to do it again with in the next year or so ;D

That stormpulse.com tracking map is nice.

I've been using http://www.wunderground.com/tropical/  (click on Ike).
They have many different maps and views for each storm, as well as regular
weather updates and lots of other stuff.

Here's a good website for keeping track of all the named beasties wreaking havoc.

I HATE Storm pulse!!!

Because they have the durned thing centered on us. Right between Port O'Conner and Freeport. Port O'Conner is us.

I'll be beginning to board up things tomorrow, and get Tehani ready to move out to anchor, gas up vehicles and get some extra. Might miss, might not- gotta get started now.
