     I bet you won't find this bit of info everywhere....

     I have an enclosed head with porta potty on my Mac.  It has only been used on the rare occasion that I have a guest.  I much prefer a bucket.  For #2, I line the bucket with a grocery plastic bag.  Weather and proximity of neighbours permitting, I prefer to use the bucket in the cockpit.  I then tie off plastic bag and store it in dinghy for next trip to shore and dumpster. :o  This is a particularly handy practice when making a solo crossing with no auto helm.


      Now you are beginning to figure out why an attractive woman, such as myself, sails solo :D

Ever notice in the Master and Commander movie when the ship is in the frozen southern ocean and makes her turn North. There is a crewmember sitting in the bow structure (THE HEAD) He has his pants around his ankles. The men always used the head of the ship because the wind was from abaft.

Didn't the square riggers often sail "on a bowline" into the wind?  Pointing to within 55 degrees or so was considered good, but still.

And the Captain's "head" was at the stern.

I don't remember where I read it or all the characters involved but some "pretty famous" sailor was about to deliver a new, fairly large and expensive yacht from the US to the UK.  He called on a friend who was a "super famous" sailor to see if he could accompany him.  When The "super famous" sailor said that he couldn't go the "pretty famous" sailor asked him for any advise he might have on routing, etc.  The "super famous" sailor thought for a minute and told him "Take 55 lbs. of anthracite coal and mount a board with a 12 inch hole in it to the boomkin"
Apparently the coal ran out on the last day and the crew used that board the entire trip as the head malfunctioned after the second or third day out.
Funny the things that make you a "super famous" sailor.

If you do any amount of sailing you are familiar with this topic.  Well we use our head for #1 only and use Wag Bags, available at Worst Marine, (not cheap).  My biggest problem is keeping the oder down and don't say "close the bag" I mean the head... any suggestions appreciated...I am going to try the antifreeze.

This thread is hilarious - and strangely enough, quite informative. ROFL

As for the odour - we have all suffered through the strange smells of the almost full head tank. Hang on and I'll check the name of the product I use. Back. Captain Phab Instant holding tank deodorizer - it looks sort of like sawdust and oatmeal - its dry and comes with a small scoop. One scoop and it seems to help the natural digestion and keeps down the odour. I had tried other scented liquids. Quite honestly, when I was first told about this product I was skeptical. Nothing seemed to work that well.
I had all but forgotten I ever had a problem until I read this.

being temporarily land locked until further notice---I re-entered the skydivers world today.after not jumping for 4 years it was like jump #one all over again.this took place in Mesquite Nevada elevation about 2000 feet above sea level.several hundred miles inland from the nearest ocean.I will bet some people out that way have never seen the true horizon.As I related to them about my sailing experiences,one of the jumpers was very serious about this---this particular jumper meant it when he said that I was "crazy" for crossing the ocean in such a small boat.As we both stepped aboard the Cessna Caravan for the ride to 14000 feet,(in full skydive gear) I turned to him and said"YOU THINK I AM CRAZY????"

I am still here in southern california battling a somewhat severe case of thyroid ca that spread to my lungs. as of this day I am now on permanent disability until my condition improves.the good news is it has not taken a turn for the worse in 6 months.I still have the motive and desires, but I know better than to sail back from hawaii again. I will keep in touch, eric
