Title: Entertaining laptop woes
Post by: Auspicious on September 29, 2009, 07:32:41 AM
For all those concerned about or subject to laptop failures due to moisture perhaps my experience yesterday will be of some ironic entertainment.

Despite periodic disassembly and cleaning of my 2+ year old laptop (an IBM/Lenovo T60p) the fan gave up the ghost yesterday due to the accumulation of dust in the bearings. The unit is sealed sufficiently that I can't do much more than blow compressed air through it, so I ordered a replacement part that should arrive midday tomorrow. *sigh*

Interesting that my boat computer should fail due to dry, not wet.

That's especially surprising, since most boats are relatively low dust environments, unless you're actively working on the boat, like sanding woodwork, or have a pet aboard.

You're not living aboard are you?  ;D

Clothes in and out of lockers, towels, and last but not least, the bedding. With the two of us on a 32-footer, we tend to dust every day. erh, sorry, not me, but the other, and much more important half,  ;)

Exactly. All the dust from living ashore in 10% or less of the space.

In addition to the listing above, the fuzz from pulling a Kleenex from the box, turning pages of books, dust from every piece of fabric every time you move, all in a pretty dry environment, particularly (at least for me) in winter.

Kudos to IBM/Lenovo by the way. The new fan came yesterday midday. Popped right in and the laptop is perking right along so cool and quiet.

Now I am scratching my head over whether to get a spare fan and spare keyboard or just get a netbook as a spare computer.

Just a quick dust comment. On top of the dust...I never realized how much hair we shed until living in such a small space. Miss wiping things down for a few days and WOW. Capt K with the crew dogs must be busy  ;D

Cooking fumes will make the dust stick tho the fans.
