people are like dock lines. It came to me whilst I was doing a photo study of dock ties...
Some are different but cool in their own way...

I was trying to describe to a very newbie sailor the other day why it is important to coil halyards and the like while aboard. Aside from the safety factor that comes from being more organized, I told him that others will judge his seamanship from what they see on his boat.
They cannot tell by looking at him that he might be an expert at celestial navigation or that he has weathered a fierce gale while singlehanding. But, they CAN tell whether or not he 'knows' what he is doing by the way his lines are handled.
Good line handling is but one way to communicate "I'm a competent sailor." And, I think, poor line handling says the opposite.
The anal one was a hangmans noose.Maybe he was a judge befor he retired ;D
