Something I did two off-seasons back that I'm going to recommend not only to fresh water sailors but to salty sailors as well.
It is not crazy and I think you'll like this also. Well think about it.
During the off-saeaon take all the dock lines, sheets, halyards, and miscellaneous lines down to the laundry mat and toss them into the industrial sized machine with a little mild soap. This can be done at home if the wife is OK with it. The lines out of the washer will all be one big mess and it'll take a bit of time to straighten that mess out.
Next don't dry the lines but rather take the lines home wet and sink them into an unused tub with a goodly portion of any liquid fabric softener and let the lines soak for a few days. This might stink the house up to high heaven so beware.
Drain the tub and rinse the lines and coil them up and drip dry. Might be a week before the lines dry.
The lines will be softer more comfortable to handle and easier on all of the crew hands. Going onto the third season, lines are still soft. skip.
