Well guys it's official, winter is here, my tape measure said 4 1/4" in my drive this morning I just gor done snowblowing, it sucks. Marc
Welcome to winter. :)
Yea,I,m waiting for some legalities to get ovet with up here then who knows? Maybe down there ;D
Where are you from Marc? I got about the same amount here in Milwaukee, WI. I just love shoveling. I've missed it so since last year.
I posted this pic in my thread about the boat I was SUPPOSED to go look at today.

Marc's in sunny Iowa IIRC. :)
No snow here but the line on the mountain is coming down every week. Hey I got an idea- why don't a bunch of us rebel and go to South America during our winter and back up here in say May or so. I got friends in Uruguay and its late spring there now.... ::)

I am so very sorry. I am suffering also. I find I need to wear a coat when I sail this time of year, and getting in the water is not much fun.
I understand that white stuff is really water, not sure if I believe it though...
I have also heard that where you see that stuff, the water gets hard enough that you can stand on it. I am not sure how well that works for sailing though... seems like it would be pretty slow going. That leads me to believe that maybe humans were not intended to live where such things happen.
Hope you escape soon.
Quick! The first one to jump on Faith wins! If there are enough of us we can take over the ship! ;D
One good thing about Iowa is that it's south of Minnesota ::). I've seen nice weather in Des Moines(40-50 degrees and no snow) only to drive home to N.E. Iowa(20 miles so. of Mn.) and and have 2--3 ft. of snow and a temp. of20-30 degrees :P >:(. Needless to say, I don't like winter!!!
Fair winds and warm weather ;D

Great, do your friends have enough rooms for a bunch of us ;D
I was enjoying their beaches in October- lots of area of anchor out, great food, and friendly natives- plus more in Argentina and Brazil. They were sailing down there like nobody's business. I think the best part is the general lack of tourists though.
Soo... anyone want to start an armada? ;D
Winter sucks! Its 66 here, I have all the windows open, sitting in shorts. God I hate winter! ;D
close your windows nowell, you will catch a cold. 66 is still a bit chilly for me. would love to go back to my first sailing grounds, Brazil and South America, (last time in 82..) but anyway it is where we will be heading more or less next year. Yes South America is great, and there is room for everybody, plus music is great too, so let's go ;D
Us northerners are gonna have to hire Pappy Jack to put a beat down on you wise@ss folk in more temperate climates...

I was thinking that same thing! If nothing else, we embrace our precious little time we have to sail with a vigor found nowhere else.
Those Southern boys always get smug this time of year. If it wasn't for Winter, none of us up North would get any work done on the house :)
I think everybody has to deal with one problem or another particular to their location
You might have:
Relenless, broiling sun
Prevailing light winds
Frequent squalls and thunderstorms
Hurricanes
Strong currents
Nasty inlets
Shallow water
Deep water but rocks and ledges
Small water (rivers and small lakes)
A long motor to reach open water
Bugs
Low bridges
Living more than 5 minutes away from your boat
The only thing you can't get away from is yahoo powerboaters
It is starting to get pretty cold. I found my heavy flannel coat and dug out my Damart #3 long underwear for sailing. Another couple of months and I'll be in the Damart #5 for sailing and the #3 for sleeping.
I like seasons, and a little snow can be fun, but the darn cold gets quite old quite quickly.
I like seasons also-
Brown shrimp season
White shrimp season
Crabbing season
etc
16 days til the days start getting longer again!! ;D
Cold SUX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
COLD...you want COLD....it's -12, 4-5 inchs packed snow on the ground with 3-4 more inchs fluffy called for this weekend. ;D Guess it's all relative CJ ;) The Abacos are calling and I'm listening.
NO WAY I want cold.Laura either.
It was 43 this morning and is predicted for 36 tomorrow. That's just plain too cold for us.
Laura has already laid down the law- She told me the other day, in emphatic terms-
"This is the LAST winter I'll spend in cold weather. NEXT year I'll be somewhere warm- you wanna come along, get your stuff done. Otherwise I'm going by myself!!!"
And I believe her- I'll be working HARD to get "my stuff done" for sure. Cause I'm sick of cold winters also.
And yeah I know we don't get COLD, but it's cold enough for us to not like it.
Our motto-
Snow SUX, cold SUX
;D
Charlie-
She'd gonna leave your butt behind if you don't get moving... :)
@Charlie
Wow, Is it THAT cold over there? If my widget converter thing is up to those 'weird F degrees' ;) you guys are talking about, that's just above FREEZING.
Or, about as ****ing cold as here... Interesting.
And, you better listen to your woman! I've noticed over the years that they kinda appreciate that... ::)
Where would you go to avoid the cold, Mexico?
20 years living in Montana and now we are digging out our winter gear. Somethings not right. Not suppose to be cold on the Texas coast. If I can talk Lisa into a bigger boat we'll go south until we find a land were there is no words for coat, sweaters, long handles, snow packs in there language.
I hate cold weather. Well at least I'm not riding in -30 with a wind chill of -50 any more.
Read the last post ,went outside and took this pic.The good news is it's warmed up to -1 :-[ Yep...the Abaco's are calling ;D

Well, Connie seems very happy with the Exumas. Maybe we could go further south than that too. ;D
Although Laura IS taking Spanish lessons :D

Okay guys this winter poop sucks, my boat is all covered up so I can't work on it , but I at least brought the galley to the basement so I can varnish and also my new tiller from Ida Sailor is getting several coats of varnish on it also. heck this time last year I think I was making handholes and new parts out of brazilian teak. I have my boat primed but it got too cold to soon to paint. I HATE WINTER. As soon as things become finalized here, the big "D" I am moving south. Marc
And now guess what? I just found out that tuesday we could recieve 7-9 inches of snow! Pappy Jack you might want to look for it too but from what I hear it's really gooa hit you hard over there. Marc
Marc,
I know >:(. It sounds like 6"-10" of the stuff up here tomorrow and Tue. Thank God I have a 4x4. I'm supposed to take my 90 year old Mum shopping tomorrow but I think I'll just take her list and do it for her. I to have my boat under tarps but have a frame of PVC tubes forming a work area in the back half. I just hope the snow doesn't collapse the whole thing.
Fair winds and warm weather ;D,
Pappy Jack
P.S. It's 5 degrees F wind chill right now :o.
OK guys, when you start to feel the grip of winter around your soul just listen to this, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2Isfp2w0ks 8). This should work wonders for your spirits :-*.
Warm winds and full sails,
Pappy Jack
Hmm, my forcast for this weekend 65-68 degrees, sunny, northeast winds around 10 knots becoming east in the afternoon. Seas 2 feet or less, moving into 2-4 foot seas and 10-15 knot winds Sat afternoon.
Yup, winter sucks! ;D
Umm, is that in Celcius or Farenheit??? If the latter...darn... hope you got some good long johns to put on. :)

My little town was just on CNN weather along with some other towns in the upper Midwest. Looks like we got 8" of the white stuff :o. I guess it's better than the 10'' (max) that was forcast. Always try to look on the bright side...right ???? Well, back to shoveling >:( :'( >:(.
Warm winds and fair weather,
Pappy Jack
Hey Pappy Jack, We got pretty lucky down here in DSM. 3"on top of 1/10" of ice so made some roads rather slippery. But, I must say, we do have one of the best snow removal for the streets and haighways that I'v ever seen. Buy a snowblower! I have one. Marc P.S. Iceboating anyone? I have some ideas.
Hi Marc,
Fear not my good friend, I have a snow blower. I wouldn't live here without one, especially at 59 years of age and bad back ;D. I tried iceboating a few years ago on a borrowed boat and it was a blast.
Hear is another video to help pass the winter away. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gr1RTuxNgg. Enjoy.
Warm winds,
Pappy Jack
P.S. Hey Nowell, that moaning sound you hear is my envy showing through ;).
We have not had ice or real snow (a few flurries is all), but nighttime lows have been lower 20's. Day highs range from low 40's to 50's.
Today is a heat wave. It's blowing about 20 kts out there, but 60 degrees.
Interestingly, in November we had temps that were FORTY degrees below normal.
Do you remember Crocodile Dundee in the hold up scene when the thief pulled out a knife...he reached down ..pulled his KNIFE out and said "that's not a knife...THIS is a knife" These snow pictures, taken 5 minutes ago tell all. "that's not snow...THIS is snow" :o
OK, OK...you have bigger piles than I do ;D by about a foot or two! It's not a contest that I wanted to win anyhow ;). The only good thing, IMHO, is that todays snow is next summer's sailing water.
When I was young I loved the stuff. Now that I'm older and some what wiser ???, I have much less love for it. Now I have to drive in it, shovel(snowblow) it, and work in it, not to mention that I now have S.A.D. :'(. Needless to say I can't wait for Spring or to be sent to a job in the south....sigh. This is why I now sign off with...
Warm winds and far weather,
Pappy Jack
Nope,no contest here Pappa Jack and I'd loose anyhow. There's already WAY more snow just 60 miles norh of here ;D Like you...I've lost my love of winter...yep, I used to love it. With luck I'll be towing the electra south right after new years.Shorts and a Tshirt are now my favorite wardrobe along with crocs. PS..the video is GREAT
Thanks for the insite. The weather in the Keys turned cooler, 62 this morning with a strong NE Wind. It hsould hold until Wed and then Warm Up some.
http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=marathon,%20fl&wuSelect=WEATHER
Pay in SUNSHINE helps. I do not have to buy a warm coat. Lot's of room for boats in Marathon Harbor. No work :'(
Bumming in the Keys this winter, Lynx
I know we are not to discuss politics here but....
... I am anti-winter.
Now, i do not expect much sympathy from those who choose to live
where the water gets hard this time of year...
... but I have not worn shorts in 2 days in a row now.
I am sorry to vent like this, but I am pretty upset right now. :P
;D ;D
We understand completely. We're about 35 miles west of Houston and it was THIRTY FOUR yesterday morning-'YUCK!!!
Supposed to be a warming trend now- got to 76 today. I won't complain about that :D
Ya know you two, I think I speak for everyone north of me,
:P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P
We're in the midst of an awesome storm, rain, wind and, now and then, a few flakes of that other stuff. The first of the season, with more to come, presumably.
I can't say that I'm anti-winter, but I'd definitely prefer a longer sailing season.
