Just another nice sail in 'skinny' water
Is that water below the keel or actual depth??? :)
Golly.
I was out yesterday with some friends and touched bottom at 5.6. Fortunately there was 25' "right over there." <grin>
Sure wish I was touching bottom in the Bahamas instead of the Chesapeake. It was pretty darn cold.
Auspicious-
At least your boat is in the water... the water up here is in solid form in many places, and we got the fluffy white stuff coming down... broke a state record for the most snow in the month of December that has stood for over 35 years. :)
The transducer is approx 1ft below the water line, so add a foot for true depth ;D Gotta love a boat that draws one meter
It is a lot of fun to slip right over a shoal! I used that method twice in 'races' when I had the Com-Pac 23D. Be sure to wave at the big, deep boats behind when they have to turn away... :D
If only that boat worked as well to windward! ;D
A meter... that's a lot... with the centerboard up, I'm at about 15-18 inches draft. ;)

Adrift wrote.."I'm about 15-18 inches"....please move your responce to the "does size matter" thread in 'discussion'...
1.75 m draft :(
What Capt K posted is quite accurate.A few years back while cruising on our Pearson Ariel (draft 3ft 8in) we would routinely beat a Freedom 33 to the next anchorage. They were real ice folks that 'buddied up' with us for awhile and were quite frustrated seeing us cutting across shallows as they sailed miles further to go around.
In the Bahamas, drawing less than 3 feet really has its advantages. I can anchor in 18 inches where almost nobody else can. I do get some strange looks and a few props messed up with them wizzing by and creating to much wake.
Right now I am in 2 feet of water in Man of War Cay. Just may use this as a home base for the season. Nobody else wants it. Always a place for me in Marsh Harbor.
That can have it's draw backs though. We draw 3 feet 3 inches, and last year were anchored in 6 1/2 feet of water. A squall came through and the waves built- when the storm was at it's height, we slammed bottom hard enough to put a very small crack in the hull at the bottom of the keel. I igure is was a 4 foot wave.
Since then I want AT least 8 or 9 feet to anchor in unless the area is TOTALLY protected and small enough so waves CANNOT build.
Of course having such a shallow draft also means you have a lot more choices of hurricane holes to hide in. :)
So far all of the times that I have set the hook I have had a soft bottom under my bottom.
Thanks for the tip, I will keep an eye out for it.
Lynx- we were anchored over sand. If you hit hard enough even a relatively soft bottom can be really hard.
Jut be careful.
Once again Charlie...I gotta agree with ya. Had my jenneau anchored in the shallows with about 2ft under my retracted keel years ago.The rudder was on a SS rod so it could slide up and was in the raised position.Similar to what you mentioned, it got quite rough the one night and I touched bottom several times.None felt too hard but in the AM, I found the rod the rudder slid on was bent. The tiller was stiff and the rudder was at about a 10 % angle, but usable, allowing me to get home for repairs (block of wood and a BFH) The beauty of real shallow boats is hopefully sneaking into a protected place with out wave action.Problem is..sometimes there are none that protected.
Thanks for the advice, one of the things about a Mac 26 is that everything retracts above the hull and I do retract when at anchor otherwise the banging it to much. The hull is strong enough to take all but the sharpest point.
I am getting some bow wave action here but not as much as other harbors.
Boats= work!! Jubilee weathered well..BUT..changed the waterpump impeller this mornin, did a gelcoat touch up(anchor gouge) Had late breakfast and now off to sand bottoms, paint, cetol and wax. :-(

At least you are DOWN THERE, not here trying to earn the $$$ to GET to GO!! ;D
I have to agree with Capn Smollett... you want some cheese with that whine. :) Last week, it was in the single digits here.. this week, we've gotten lucky and it's been in the high 50s, low 60s, but that is not going to last.

Geesh, Frank - maybe you should just sell that boat, and the rest of 'em, too. They're nothing but work. Hot work, down in the islands. Don't know how you can stand it...
(Note: in the image at bottom, Mr. Smiley is playing a rendition of "My Heart Bleeds For You"...)
;D
CapnK-
You really need an animated gif version of that one... :)
Tried to wax the boat...tooooo hot ;) wax set too fast.Sanded/painted the bottoms nstead. Sunny, about 80...nice breeze. Will do cetol etc tomorrow.Sure is nice here....even working ::)
Launched...motor started instantly (weww) and this message coming to you from 'stolen wifi' while anchored at ManJackCay. ;D Been sooooo nice last few days.Sunny, nice breeze and blue/green water.Life is good.
Hi Frank, Not stealing at Man Jack Cay as the person on land lets the cruisers use his so that cruisers can write home after arriving in the Abacos.
Have fun, a little front comming in the next 2 days. Just enough to put some clouds in the sky, wash the boat for free and drop the temps from the 80's into the mid 70's.
The wind has been still here and the water is so clear that dinghying around is like floating in the air. Stranger at night.
Crossed the 'big river' yesterday from the Westend GrandBahamaIsland to Stuart. Took 18.5 hrs..then motored in to anchorage after dark...long day!! Have been to Green Turtle, Manjack, AllensPensacola, Mangrove and WestEnd so far. Here in Florida about a week then heading back.
Wow, 18.5 hrs, you must have sailed/motored sailed. I hope the autopilot was working.
See you in a couple of weeks.
Yep-motorsailed, Autopilot-Nope...hand steered :-( Here is a picture from AllensPensacola of a very odd sign posted there ;-)
Haha! Cool!!! ;D
Grog fer that'un! :)
Frank - are you going to cross over tonight?
If you stick around much longer, buy an autopilot. Very well worth it. Or atleast crew on somebodies boat that has one.
I'll probably cross mid next week.Provisioning and visiting. Auto pilot is repaired now ;D Can't wait to get back...
Cool, the way things are looking you should have a window then.
Left Indiantown yeasterday heading east on the St Lucie canal.Locked thru and ran into Craig/Rose and Peterdog in Manetee Pocket...almost literally. As I went to raft up and make my final turn to come along side...the OB had vibrated in the opposite direction and the boat would not turn...REVERSE!!! "don't try this at home kids, I'm a trained professional" ;D (no Kurt..alcohol was NOT involved ;)) They are happy and truly seemed to have enjoyed their cruise.Peterdog is very content on the boat and knows his way around deck with ease.Craig and I had Peterdog out for a couple of walks.Craig BBQ'd steaks and to his own surprise..didn't overdo them.I had faith (couldn't resist the pun) They are refueling this am and heading off for the 3pm lock opening. The canal is as low as I've seen it in my 5yrs up/dwn this end. I tried to swing the compass on a new tillerpilot twice and ran aground both times.Had to wait until near Stuart for enough water to complete it.Craig and Rose loved the Exumas and report Connie is happy and in a great situation.I wish them well on their transit of the canal and an enjoyable time at their son's wedding in march. Rose stated it would be hard to get her back out after grandkids show up...Craig...get planning your return quick!! ;D I warned them that there are crocs on the canal and to be careful walking Peterdog.I had taken pictures of crocs at Indiantown marina 2 days before. The sign reading 'don'd feed the crocodiles' was not for humour.I have to get a new battery today.Left the bilge pump on (by accident) for who knows how long. The poor battery simply isn't coming back.Off to Lake Worth soon and Bahamas bound on wed. as there is a S wind called for.I'd like to say that Both Craig and Rose stated as I've posted before...it is the people you meet along the way that make it interesting and rewarding.I'm very thankful to be out here and thankful to have met both Craig and Rose.Fine people!!
Thanks Frank,
It was really great getting to meet you. Really enjoyed the evening, and appreciate (again) all your encouragement as we got ready to go. We saw several gators today too, we are right now on the hook right off a park / boat ramp near Indian Town.
Hope you got your battery issue worked out today, and wish you a great crossing. That new boat is really impressive, I am really surprised at all the 'goodies' that come on it. It seems like a really great Bahamas boat.
Take care, Fair Winds, and SailFar! ;D
Craig at dinner
Our lil raft up
Craig and Peterdog
Thursday looks like a perfect day to cross.Only 2fters and a S wind, so I'm hanging out another day at manetee Pocket,Lake Worth tomorrow...Bahamas on Thursday ;D
So, wheres the pictures??
You have to bring up the actual thread Jim. Then you can see them.
Tnx, Charlie, took me a while, but I found them....

sea...kept going to Mangove.ANCHORED at 8.15PM. Left at 7.30am to go
to Allens Pensacola.(54KNM)..nice close reach all day @
5+knts..ANCHOR DOWN @ 5.50PM. Left 8.30am...nice beam reach..anchor
down at Manjack 15min. ago. Tired, but very happy to make it here
quickly.
Good timing, some fronts for the next 3 days that will make for some nice down wind sailing.
Tucked in here at ManJack till monday am..then off to GreenTurtle to check-in and pay duty on the boat ..recently reduced I'm told..hope its not a rumour ;D "jubilee" will soon be a "Bahamas boat" Here's a pic of sunrise on the crossing about 14knm out
this odd looking cloud had my attention for about 40 minutes until finally 'dissolving' its shape.A funny feeling when your 35knm out and this is coming at ya
I can see why the shape of that cloud was a bit worrying...but most thunderheads I've seen are a bit darker than that in color. :)
I've been walking around GreenTurtle today and had a revolation!! People here "SEE" you...when they pass...on foot or gulf cart...they SEE you...and wave. Up home, everyone is busy'..minds elsewhere..they 'see you'...but look right thru you....no responce!!! People here are "in the moment" , not pre-occupied with BS...hense the waves and hello's. Just an obsevation..but SO TRUE
Yippee! I'm going to be sailing in the Exumas with friends on their Jeanneau 40, Far Niente from March 13 to about the 20th. I can hardly wait.
Well I will be there soon after you ;D April 3 through 14th, except I will be on a "small" boat" a Sea Pearl.
Frank,
I think you're on to something there :o. And I quote..."In proportion as he simplifies his life, the laws of the universe will appear less complex." Henry David Thoreau. Oh, oh...here is another Thoreauism," I felt as Diogenes when he saw the boy drinking out of his hand, and thew away his cup." Some time ago friends of mine went to Grand Bahama on vacation. "Man, those people move slow." To which I replied " When you live in paradise, why bust your butt?" ???
Fair winds,
Pappy Jack
There is a front moving thru with strong winds today and strongerforcast for tomorrow.Rather than risk dragging, I picked up a mooring here at Black Sound Green Turtle cay.
I am glad thta you found one. There is none in Hope Town. You can find one in Man of War Cay. If you want one for more than a month let me know. Some are cheeper than others because of location and draft.

Oh man - you are begging for an anchor thread. 8)
Warm front today, Blowing and brief showers, then tomarrow a cold front that shoud be through tomarrow night (we hope). Some rain and gail force winds that are shifting.
It is either dock, mooring, or 2 or more anchors in protected harbor from winds in all directions. Tis the season.
On the plus side the "Winter temps have droped below 70 3 times (upper 60's) this season in the Abacos. In Georgetown it has not. Have the blankets ready for this one!

no 'begging for an anchor thread' here ;D The island closest is totally open to the predicted winds."Black Sound" where I am now is grassy bottom and I warn'd a fellow last night that was anchored to get a mooring. He dragged @ 7am. I am confident in my anchoring ability...but I also know the erea I am in.When a local is asked 'why is it called Black Sound?...the reply is "anchor there and find out".Why 'sleep with one eye open" with 40+knot winds if ya don't have to? ;)
Kurt...I resemble that remark !!!!!!!! ;) ;D :o ::)
As forcast by Chris Parker...its blowing a steady 30 with gusts over 40. "I love my mooring " ;)
We had a warm front and then a cold front in the same 36 hrs. Wind gust reported at 49 mph.
I love my mooring!!!
The fronts have passed and a great looking clear morning with nice North winds. Temps in the low 70's. ;D
Wow...lot of 'singlehanding' talk etc lately ;) Will take a bit of reading to catch up. I left Green Turtle yesterday and sailed on to Man Of War Cay and anchored out Hailed the good ship 'Lynx' and had a few gab sessions enroute to town and back. Ran into 3 other boats from previous years...hard to get things done while talking ;) Left this mornin and am now anchored (yes Kurt..ANCHORED)out of Hope Town. This is a very pretty place.
just another day in paradise pic
the 'america's cup' was held today in the bay at Hope Town. One mark was just off my stern...good view and fun to watch pic
AAAA_ yer mother wears army boots!!!
;D ;D
Nice pics Frank. You're making my eyes water.
Thanks Frank, unlike Charlie I REALLYappreciate you pictures
::) Perhaps it's because I am going to be down there in another month and a half ;D ;D ;D

This ones for Tim ;) pic
AHHHHHHHHHHHHH! ;D
Oh Frank, ;)
If envy is a sin, then I AM A SINNER :o!!! Thanks for the pics, man. They give an ol' Midwesterner something to live for ::).
Far winds,
Pappy Jack
Thanks Frank... those of us caught in the depths of winter appreciate it.
Sailed up from HopeTown back to GreenTurtle today.Very windy. No rush, so I dble reefed the main and made 3.8-4,9 knots enroute.Figured why stress myself....why not enjoy a nice windy day? Reef points are 'good' ;D I have 2 buddies flying in on wed. Will be nice to give a mini Abaco tour.I'll probably talk their ear's off after being solo so long :o PS...I love it here
FRANK - You really know how to hurt a guy! ::)
Frank-
You're an evil, evil man... :( We're stuck in the depths of winter up here.... and you're talking about beautiful sailing with nice conditions.
You just need to come down and talk to him. Really, he is not bad to talk in 75 deree, a breeze, sun, shallow water, ......
Lynx-
You're an evil reprobate as well. :)

brrrr yuk! :(
Just a little refreshing coolness! :P
Frank,
Here is some grog in thanks, keep the great pics coming. As Rose and I continue our way back north we both spend more time talking about our plans for the next trip then the cruising we are doing today.
Tim,
QuoteBut then I remembered I was going to be down there also during Spring Break!
Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin
I shall try to remember the bar (Captain Jim's?) , but when you are in Hope Town ask for 'Chicago Mike' he keeps his Ariel there and is a great guy. (Here is some grog for you to pass along to him for me).
No prob Craig...I know the ariel. He was not around last time I went looking...will try again in a few days.Just had 2 good buddies fly in to Treasure Cay...took them to Manjack, GreenTurtle, Hope Town and then Marsh Harbour (yuck) where they just flew out of today. Was a fun time. Judy flys in here March 1st and with bad weather/winds forcast, I'll just hang out here until she arrives. Sure is 'culture shock' how loud and busy this is after GreenTurtle and HopeTown.
Frank, Are you going to be at Nipers on Sunday?
Leaving Man of War on Turrsday if the weather is as predicted and going over to Marsh for the day. Where are you anchored?
Lynx
I'll be at Marsh Harbour untill march 2nd :-( Anchored "yes Kurt..anchored ;-)" out front near the 'moorings boat rentals'. Here is a few pics from Marsh Harbour
Just wait until you try to pull up those anchors, you may need my 50 hp.
See you on Thurs. Pizza for lunch?
I need to go to Ace Hardware.
Quite a rain around 7 am in Marsh Harbour...lots of wind too. Calling for gusts over 35 knots today. Feel good here at anchor...great holding in a grey coloured firm mud. Pic just before dingy ride in to do laundry.
Its a tough life!
*grrr*
Met James from MV Lynx for a Marsh Harbour walkabout and pizza.Good pizza...reasonable too. Ya have to dodge traffic here...busy ! Had another couple wake me up for a visit. I've ran into them 5 times in Florida and 8-9 times here in Bahamas over years, nice peple.Small world out here. Sunny today after yesterdays big blow and rain. Here's a few pics from Marsh Harbour Kurt...note the ANCHOR line off my bow ::)
some more
one more ;) ............sorry Charlie :o
Thanks for the pics Frank, and Charlie probably won't mind, he and Laura actually went out and spent the night at anchor last night. ;)
took this a few minutes ago while having coffee in the cockpit..."just another morning in Bahamas'

Did I ever mention how much I can hate you on mornings like this... :)
Hey Frank - How about I show everyone "The Rest of the Picture"?
(All: It's sad, isn't it? Poor guy...)
LOL ;D
Those pics can't be real, the whole world is covered in white stuff.
Oh man!!!
I needed that! I spent 12 hrs. working outside last night in Wisconson. It was COLD, snowing, blowing and(I'll say it one more time :'()COLD. I told myself that when I get back to the motel I will get on line and look up SailFar and hope that there are some new pics. from somewhere warm ;) and there they are. Thanks from somebody who really needed a lift ;D.
Fair winds,

there is 'eye candy' docked here too (Kurt..us poor folk ANCHOR out ;D) pic
A Sailfar exclusive: I have been working on a search engine bot that will go through my database of cruising links and look for specific search terms. It digs down 3 pages deep and checks the website for search terms out of a database. I have been working on this for about 3 weeks straight and finally got it to work the way I want it. I think it is working anyway. Here are the results for the Bahamas:
http://cruisenews.net/Bahamas.htm (http://cruisenews.net/Bahamas.htm)
Is this useful? I am going do an ICW page next, with all the ports I can find up and down the ICW.
Cleaned up the boat today. Judy's sister flys in shortly...Judy arrives tommorrow. Had other visiters this afternoon...hard to photograph...but managed a few pics...note the fish in his mouth 1st pic
That guy with the fish is doing what your doing with these photos! ;) ;D
If you havent been speaking with anyone up here Frank, let me tell you that it was in the negative 25 ( celcius for our US friends ) for 02/26/27/28/29 and calling for neg 2 on Sat the first.
Here I was thinking it was going to be a great day, then I saw these pics.

The 'pointer sisters' on deck
Looks like a big catamaran... :)
ManJack's ocean side beach is HUGE...and all to yourself
Have you been there all day?
Nice weather, finally in the low 70's and in the 60's tonight.
No. The cat returned to Hope Town and Jubilee carried on to Spanish for the predicted high winds/front coming thru. The sail up was more wind than the actual front ! We made 6.8 knots down wind with just a reefed jib!! Fun stuff.Hot showers, breakfast and we are heading back Manjack way today. Here's a pic of the front approaching taken from Spanish's veranda
"young free spirits"....Someone had mentioned the lack of young people out cruising now as compared to the 70's and how the youth seemed focused on getting 'ahead' and $$...that the 'free spirit' of youth is gone. I mentioned this to a friend Bill...he replied "they're still out here..it's just there are SO many more grey hairs now". A few weeks passed and we returned to Manjack. Our last night there we moved down to the lower anchorage near Bill. He came out to ask us in for a fish fry. Getting in just before dark, we were greeted by Ben..a young man who later treated us to his singing and guitar skills well into the night, Sarah and Jay..a young couple From England that left Annapolis on Jan. 8th ( YES..JANUARY 8th..there WAS ice in the harbour) on their Bristol 27 they had just finished working on to cruise thru the Bahamas and next year to England. Jay was happy as Lancy Burns, a veteran of 3 Atlantic crossings-2 solo (one OSTAR) was anchored out back with his wealth of experience to share with the young captain. Sarah has a beautiful voice and did several duets with Ben...even learned to sing 'southern'...quite a feat for a girl with a proper English accent. Across sat Tony and Kelly..another couple in their 20's. Tony was missing playing his guitar and wanted badly to join in. He had pawned his to add to their cruising fund and stay out longer. This couple had 2 dogs aboard and had us laughing all night with their stories of miss adventure. After living on canned food for a while, they all pigged out on Leslie's conch fritters and grouper. Brian..a young contractor from Michigan sat in as well.I told him I was 'kind of' from Michigan. I had an uncle Frank there and my dad always joked that Frank's farm was where I was concieved...hence my name. He said his wife was now do and he'd have to call his child 'Double Breasted' when it arrived as that was the Cay it was concieved at. So there we were...3 mature couples being totally entertained by these 6 young people in their 20's..so full of life and adventure. All on extremely tight budjets..all having a hoot. Bill was right...they ARE still there..ya just have to look a lil harder....but its worth the find. We went back to Jubilee happy after having one of the very best nights of our cruise.Singing and laughter was the main course after the fritters and fish. I hope to meet more 'youngin's' next year. pic is Bill,Jay,Sarah and Ben on the Bristol 27 when they sailed out to invite us to the fish fry.
Ben, Sarah, Jay and Bill can be seen on the bristol 27 in my photo file 'Bahamas 08' . I just uploaded several pics from this years cruise there
Kewl, Frank. Good pics.

CapnK-
What! you were out having fun... I didn't think that was allowed for sysops and admins. :)
One of our last days on Manjack we dingied out back in calmer waters exploring.4 dolphins came to 'play' and darted beside, under and just in front of us for about 15 minutes. Look close...4 in 2nd pic
Just pulled into the driveway after a 26 hr drive. !6 yesterday, 10 today. This is what awaited me on march 27th. Reality sucks sometimes :(
FINALLY!!!
After all these months, *I* get to rub it in (for once!)... ;D
Hey Frank - my commute today - 250 feet, across the marina, by rowing my dinghy. To work on a bote. A sailbote.
It was really tough.
Phew! Think I'll have a beer.
(Hey, I thought you were stopping by on the way back?!? Man, that lookscold and unwelcoming, compared to other pics you've posted lately...)

Well I made to Exuma, but I can tell ya fer sure, sailing is a lot more fun than flying commercial! :'( Took more than 24 hours to get from SF to Exuma
But it looks like fine sailing weather, and we take off manana for cays northward.
Unfortunately I neglected a USB cable so no pics till I get back.
Wish you all were here (for those that are not)

OK OK...still snow banks, although much lower now. Finally grassy spots starting to show on the lawn. The river is now open in the center but iced about 150 yds from shore.Hopefully its all gone when I get caught up here
