Title: Coast Pilots and PDF Readers
Post by: Captain Smollett on June 04, 2006, 12:09:02 PM
As most of you may know, you can obtain Coast Pilots Here (http://nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/nsd/cpdownload.htm).

However, I did hit one snag that MAY effect some other Linux users, so I thought I'd post a workaround.

For some reason, the Volume 4, Chapter 12 (ICW) pdf does not open properly with kghostview on Linux.  The first page opens fine, but all other pages are blank.  I tried using Acrobat Reader under wine, and got only black bars where text should be.  This pdf opens fine with Acrobat Reader on Windows.

A workaround is to use the Free Foxit PDF Reader (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php) for Windows.  This program works perfectly under wine and opens that pdf flawlessly.

I'm not sure what it is about this particular file that gives kghostview problems; the other Volume 4 chapters work just fine.

LOL... even though I used to make my living supporting Windows networks...I just couldn't see wasting my personal time on a Windows machine...especially once OS X came along... I've been using the Macs since the "Fat Mac" days.

Best part of using OS X, besides not having to worry about the viruses, trojans and worms that affect Windows-based systems, is that PDF files are supported natively in the OS... Anything you can print, you can turn into a PDF...every PDF I've run across just opens...
