Title: fall 12....winter 2013 plans??
Post by: Frank on September 20, 2012, 08:36:37 PM
The leaves are changing here at home. I have one last "burning leaf river cruise" planned before heading S. What's everyong up to? Cruises planned? Repairs? Modifications? Destinations?  Anyone heading to the Abacos this winter??

Heading to Oklahoma on Oct 2 for Sail Oklahoma- runs through the 8th. After that, some short cruises here locally til it gets chilly, then boat work til spring.

Abacos would be fun, but not happening this year. Have fun.

CJ....your "chilly" and mine are different. Up here, chilly means you can literally "walk on water"   ;D

I'm just hoping to be able to get mine fixed back up before Spring/Summer 2013.  ;)

Is it fall yet? I'm at anchor right now (I can't decide if MiFi is a blessing or a curse), and will keep sailing for another week or so as I figure out the quirks of the new boat. This winter I have a long project list. Nothing too serious, happily; but I'm going to try and get through the whole thing so I have less project work to worry about next year.

Not quite ready to quit my job. Probably another two or three years to pay off the boat and squirrel enough cash away before heading seriously south.

Woke up this morning to heavy frost on the windows. Guess I'd better get heading up river soon  ;D I was out in the woods walking the dog yeserday afternoon. Fall certainly is a beautiful season. Sun hitting the leaves, no bugs...jacket on but open....did I mention no bugs...gotta love it!

Well, after 2 years of deciding to work on my boat, my skill set, and trying to get a time window where my telecommuting work would line up, it's finally happened.  I was even lucky enough to meet a lovely first mate last year that had already decided that she wanted to live on a boat and cruise as a lifestyle.  We're heading down the ICW and each day we go further than we've ever been before.  Right now we're staying in Vineyard Haven for a week or so to get caught up on telecommuting, do some minor boat repairs, hang out with friends, explore, etc.  it's very affordable and welcoming here and the provisioning is excellent, especially if you're half Brazilian like me.

Next step will be either Block Island or Point Judith and then catching every good weather window down Long Island Sound, through heck's Gate, down the coast of NJ, through the C&D, and hopefully getting to the Baltimore area around Halloween.  Then, we'll slow down in the Chesapeake and NC and just take our time.  As Mainers, we plan on feeling fairly warm while the locals complain about the cold, but if we get cold, we'll just keep going.  Destination unknown.

Next boat project is a way off, but involves building a PT11 nesting dinghy so we'll have a dinghy that can stow on deck for going offshore.

Hope to meet up with some of you on the way down.  Cheers, Colin

That all sounds great. I like the "no set plans" part....makes for a better cruise. Enjoy yourselves!!

Still doing a lot of sailing.  Because of family commitments and health, all we'll be doing is day sailing, but we're doing a lot.

I'm in the process of making ready to bring Skidbladnir home for the winter to be near my shop.  Going to redo the interior (actually, just "do" as it's pretty bare) so we can turn it into a cruiser for next summer.

Have plans coming for Ian Oughtred's Granny Pram.  We're using an old heavy "tin" (I'm told) dinghy right now that's a real pain.  I haven't done any boat building for awhile and now that I'm fully retired, it'll be good to get back to work in the shop.

My wife has gone from a reluctant sailor to being pushy.  She wants to sail all the time and keeps showing me bigger boats because she say's they'll be more comfortable to cruise in.  She's in charge of telling me how to redo the interior.  What a deal!!

John

I'm in Deltaville, Virginia, working my way south after checking out the Annapolis Boat Show. I'm going to cruise all over N.C. until after Thanksgiving (going to Raleigh to spend Turkey Day with family). After that, I'll just point south and see where I end up.

After we finish our Arkansas River Cruise,  we will be leaving Kemah TX to follow The Charlie Jones Route to The Bahamas and up the East Coast. Chris wants to head across the Atlantic after that. Sounds good to me!

When you get done with the river, ya'll come on by and we'll go over charts.

One thing I can tell you- skip Flamingo, Fla. Absolutely zero there for cruisers, and shallow getting in.

On the other hand, Little Shark River would be a nice stop.

Thanks Charlie, we'll do that!
